Road Safety in Britain
The first death in a car accident in Britain was on 23 February 1899. A driver
turned a corner at a speed of 40 kph and the car crashed. In those days, cars didn’t have
seat belts and the driver died. In 1998, a survey showed the following information:
Road User Deaths
Drivers 1,850
Motorcyclists 500
Cyclists 150
Pedestrians 900
For many years motorcyclists took risks because they didn’t wear helmets and many
motorcyclists died. The law changed in 1972. Then motorcyclists had to wear helmets to
protect their heads.
The survey showed that the majority of bicycle accidents were with boys 12-15
years old. The survey showed that these had accidents because:
- they didn’t look before they turned right,
- they didn’t stop at a junction,
- cars didn’t see them.
The survey also showed that 20% of accidents with pedestrians happened on or
near a zebra crossing. It didn’t show why.

Kangaroos live only in Australia, like koala bears. Mother kangaroos carry their
babies in a pouch, a big pocket at the front of their bodies. Baby kangaroos stay in
the pouch for months. They stick their heads out of the pouch after 150 days and at
190 days they can leave it for a short time. Most animals run on four legs, but
kangaroos use only their two back legs to make long jumps. Kangaroos can jump three
metres high because their back legs are very strong. Most animals have small tails, but

Last weekend I took part on a school trip with my classmates from our
primary school. We visited a large farm near Manchester. I must admit it was
awesome! Since I am a ‘city boy’, I have never seen such wonderful animals. I saw
sheep eating grass in the pasture. The kind farmers allowed us to milk the cows and
stroke the calves and goats. Furthermore, we could pick up the eggs from the hen
house. But the most fantastic experience was horse riding! Trying it out was one of
my oldest dreams. When I was sitting on horseback, I decided that I will be a
professional rider at all costs. At the end of the day, we were invited for a traditional
farm dinner which contained fresh pork chop, beefsteak with egg and milk. I can say
undoubtedly that this day was the best day of my life. I didn’t even want to go back
to my crowded home city.
