Representation of Maps

REPRESENTATION OF
MAPS

HOW WERE MAP MADE

• Cartography or Map making is the
procedure of making maps since ancient
times. Right from the cave paintings to the
maps of Greece, Babylon and on into the
exploration to the 21st century, people
have created and used maps to navigate
their way throughout the world.

• The first maps were made in almost the
same way as they are made now, by using
the method of surveying or of
triangulation, even the satellites still use
the same basic principles of triangulation
to produce maps. Triangulation today is
used for many purposes, including
surveying, navigation, metrology,
astrometry, binocular vision, model
rocketry and gun direction of weapons.

WHAT ARE GLOBES

A globe is a spherical model of Earth, of
some other celestial body, or the celestial
sphere. Globes serve purposes similar to
some maps, but unlike maps, do not distort
the surface that they portray except to
scale it down. A model globe of Earth is
called a terrestrial globe. A model globe of
the celestial sphere is called a celestial
globe.

WHAT ARE MAPS

• A map is
a symbolic representation of
selected characteristics of a place,
usually drawn on a flat surface.
Maps present information about
the world in a simple, visual way.
They teach about the world by
showing sizes and shapes of
countries, locations of features,
and distances between places.
Maps can show distributions of
things over Earth, such
as settlement patterns.

Advantages of maps

• Two advantages of maps:
• Maps are easier to use and

easier to carry around
• They can show the earth's

entire surface or just a
small part and can show
even a small locality in a
great detail.

Disadvantages of
maps

• Two Disadvantages:

• All maps have distortions
because it is impossible to
represent a three-dimensional
objects like the earth
accurately on flat maps.

• Maps with no scale give a poor
idea of distances and maps
with no legend are frequently
confusing to the user

Advantages of globes

• Advantages -
• It gives a better ideas of

parallels (latitudes) and
meridians (longitudes).
• It helps us to understand
how day and night occur
and seasons are caused.
• It gives the ideas of tilt of
the Earth's axis.

Disadvantages of globes

• Disadvantages -
• It is difficult to carry it

anywhere.
• It cannot be used to study the

specific part of the Earth.
• It does not shows towns, cities,

district, roads, railways etc.
