Hi, I'm Jose Gomez!

I am a visual artist, originally from Seville and based in London. My practice is
about perception, form and colour: visual and conceptual. I explore through my
paintings how mindfulness as a natural quality touches our sense in our collective
and popular territory. As an artist I am mainly interested in creating works that call
for the participation of the viewers. I consider my cultural identity from Southern
Spain, as a significant inspiration for my work as well as my observations and
experiences from being a Londoner.
As a dynamic and innovation-seeking artist I evolve in each series of work that I
make, using different materials and techniques which allow me to explore from
various perspectives with energy, expression and freedom. The human figure and
vivid colours are present in my paintings; it allows me to switch seemingly
from abstract to figurative composition.

AMEZED

The creation for this new series of figurative paintings is based on the human figure and its
surroundings, in addition to other works. The figures are anonymous beings; they’re
especially male characters who display unique characteristics - mainly filled with erotic
traits - and found in peculiar situations. Most of all the paintings evoke photographs that I’ve
taken randomly; those are of curious sceneries and re-enacted in my artworks, using vivid
colours and in an established form of expression that sometimes changes the original
scene while adding new elements to its re composition. This new series is part of a specific
body of work inspired by my constant search and find of curious situations.

The idiosyncrasies I witness tend to remind me of my own liking for the amusing;
therefore I want to take this concept further on canvas. Similarly to my previous series,
my interest is to create scenarios where different elements merge visibly - human
figures, the city, nature and (inner/outer) space. With these paintings I want the elements
to interact with each other, with their lights and shadows; I want them to fulfil their
secret needs, to reveal their nature and their natural impulse. That’s what my creative
exploration in these works is about: I want to capture the surreal world behind the real
world.

TRAGICOMEDIA

This series of abstract paintings are an exploration of the interconnection
between tragic and comedy that transit constantly in human existence.
With this series, I seek to mix playfully tragic and comic elements into colourful
compositions to bring palpable sensations of breath. In my mind, a search for
inner balance, the purity of love, nature and madness as well as the glory of
human passion are always connected. And I wanted to express the collision - and
its strength - of this bag of emotions on the canvas.

In my work, presenting joy and celebration of life, is very important to me. And so is using
buoyant and strong colours to express these feelings. In these series, though, I’ve also
experimented with dark colours to embody the artist’s existential isolation. All these colours
drive these paintings with expressive gesture and vivacious movements of freedom.

CHULAS Y FLAMENCAS

The series of paintings are a homage to the female figure, it is a way of symbolizing femininity
and feminism, showing the pose of stylized women, including different singularities. With this
collection, the androgynous portraits show individual image of these women; represented with
bright colours. In these paintings, they are free and sophisticated with monochromatic
backgrounds and different patterns representing different motifs, making them particular,
elegant and wit in some cases. The backgrounds colours are based in the colours of nature.

.The Flamencas are Andalusia women dressing their distinguished costumes, are oriented to
my closest cultural identity. They are autonomous women, of a determined character and
always ready for fun.The Chulas are divas posing for fashion magazines and photographic
spotlights, "La femme fatale"; they are seductive women using gimmicks like beauty and
intelligence to achieve their desires. The Flamencas have been inspired by Spanish painters
who have shaped the image of the Andalusia woman in their creations. The Chulas have been
inspired by the fashion magazines of the 50s and 60s of the last century. As with all
reproduced characters, one cannot speak of a single meaning; this is changing according to
the time and places..

SELF PORTRAITS

These series of minimal paintings, produced using a metallic material (foil blocking) on
wooden boards, engage in amusement with the reflections of the viewers; creating self-
portraiture images, which is a psychological evidence of the reflected image, not always an
objective picture of the viewer and his personality. These works have a spiritual nature and
sensuality which discern the human reaction to the glossy and colourful finish of art work. The
liquid feature gives the viewer a huge visual impact within the surroundings it occupies;
embodying the materiality, light and reflection of the infinite space. With this series of minimal
paintings, my aim is to explore and to give pleasure to our visual organism, based on the
interpretation of our appearance and our natural ability for observation that make possible an
emotional response.
