editor's note

WELCOME, to the edition that was almost never to be, but as Sox The Poet
wisely said it, 'there is no harm in delivering a late issue.' So here we are!
The January issue could have easily been our very last issue of BD, well
that's according to me, unless someone on my team would have chosen to

continue the legacy we have begun, but then I would have not known.
Enough of my riddles and deep reflective stuff.

Are y'all ready for Valentine's Day or you are still praying and fasting for the
ONE? What ever your case may be, here at Bold Dialogue we celebrate each
of you and appreciate you more than you will ever know; thank you for your

support, feedback and constructive criticism. We are because of you, and
from our hearts to yours, we wanna say

Happy Galentine's & Valentine's Days

Dear Cancer Survivor

I am filled with thanksgiving and gratitude that we survived, I am glad we are
alive to tell our stories and hopefully encourage those in the eye of the cancer
storm. Perhaps that is the main reason we were spared, so that others may
find hope and see a light at the end of their tunnel. Or maybe we are here
today as living testimonies of God’s grace and what second chances look like.
Probably our time on this life journey was not up, or possibly so that this
letter may come to be. Whatever the reason or reasons, we are here and we
should never forget to give thanks for having been spared.

As we commemorate World Cancer Day on the 4th, which is coincidentally my birthday too;
I just want to say I understand and I know how the journey of being a survivor is an
upward one and at times the climb is on the North face of the mountain {extremely
challenging and triggering}.

bold dialogue - February, 2022

To life and happiness it has always been the dream. Though elusive to many,
Cicilia felt it was her portion. Irrespective of the debilitating circumstances
pervading her life. Characterised by the brutish and radish words from her
bull. Her husband physically and mentally abused her petite frame. She stayed
in the relationship for three years. Until slowly it began to dawn on her that
the man she had married was not all that glittering. The young man was a
young achiever that had broken the shackles of poverty. Born and raised in
the squatter camps of Harare. The young man understood sleeping on an
empty stomach, lying on the bare ground and lice scratching one’s scalp. The
case was no different for Cicilia but luck met her family. They won a house in
one of her father's betting escapades. Sadly her family was met with the
sudden death of her father. He did not enjoy his new found wealth.

Cicilia bonded with J in those trying times She endured the pain and protected the

of the loss of her father. Love emerged and imagine of a "good wife". The husband
the young couple faired in love. J's parents outgrew his bad habits, as they all say. The
were elated that their son had met a loving past was buried and the psychological
daughter in law whose heart was gold. He effects on the children was buried too. The
was raised by both parents whose past acts of abuse were the untold and
relationship picture was stormy. It was a abominable secrets of the family. Their new

unspoken of elephant in the family home.

bold dialogue - February, 2022

The world at large knew their struggles but chose to cast a blind eye to them. It
encompassed her present and past reality. Cicilia felt his torments in her thoughts and
relived all of yesteryears in today. Sadly to add to her pile of problems, she had given her
heart to the man not the maker that made the man. Woogh woogh, not the god man in the
man that wastes not or perishes. Family counselling had failed because the blame was
always shifted on her as a woman. How she had failed to respect, honour and submit to her
husband. Cicilia had decided to leave her marriage to find herself. The separation process
was less head cracking as it was a customary marriage. Elders were recalled and the
young man admitted that he wanted to leave his wife. The feelings were mutual for
separation but the shame was gripping for Cicilia. Nonetheless a journey of a thousand
steps begins with one step. Change is a process and it’s not always easy, it takes time.
Cicilia reminisced those words time and time again. A lioness was not always without
scars. She had to crawl, walk and run for her freedom. She was the giant with the keys of
freedom and time was not her friend. Cicilia had a lot of reinventing, reasserting and
awakening. She had to drop her heavy baggage of unforgiveness and begin loving herself.
Loving one self as though she was the only girl in the world. Love never fails, it conquers
all. These were her projections into her now and the future. She was assured that with
those words she would receive love, happiness and peace. She had chosen to be an oasis of
peace and love.

Chosen

By Thembe

bold dialogue - February, 2022

Moses had to hook up with his God by the burning bush resort and spa.
He couldn’t take his homies along - it was a solo mission.

The superpowers he ended up with were scary - the clan didn’t know if they could trust
him - the loneliness was palpable. He didn’t have a Famous Five or a Secret Seven.
He saw the wonders by hisself, and even when he returned with a vision of what life could
be like, a vision he struggled to believe in himself, and so struggled to sell to his fellow
villagers, his mission was a lonely one.

Each time he had to have a performance appraisal, it was in one of those one-on-one closed
session side rooms, where there’s no visitors’ chairs, no one tagging along for moral
support - it’s just you and the boss. Then he’d get back to the factory and find the workforce
had created a mess. It was hectic man.

That fella Moses, he got the worst deal, man. Forty years tryna keep a bunch of errant
peeps on a path that would help them save themselves.  Forty years of law enforcement,
dealing with their misdemeanours, their grumbling and their drama.  And after all of it,
after all the scary, frank and open conversations with the most terrifying Board Chairman
in history, Moses never got to see the retirement benefits that would have been due to any
CEO. Heck, he didn’t even get to attend the big reveal party.

That’s what it looks like when you’re chosen. It’s helluva hard and helluva lonely.

So, if you feel like there are some chosen people that you want to bully into leading the
charge, remember Moses, and rather lead yourself.  Leave them folks alone.

Ask yourself, “Am I the modern day Moses?  Can I withstand the alone-ness?”

Because being chosen means being set apart - standing alone.
You don’t get to choose who is chosen.
You only get to answer if you’re the one.

The Morning Prayer

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, and
I will look up.” Psalm 5:3

Have you, like me, ever wondered as to why the birds sing so high and melodiously early in
the morning? One early morning as I walked into the university campus, I heard the
birds sing beautifully and very high as they produced a really joyful sound. I
stopped to look at and hear them; I couldn’t help but just praise the Lord. That
wonderful moment led me to into a deep moment of reflection. If the birds call upon
the Lord very early in the morning with praises and melodious tunes, how about me
His child who is rational and wakes up every morning to witness the Lord’s mercies
that are renewed each day? When Jesus was here on earth, the Bible records that
very early in the morning He would go and pray to His Father. This clearly indicates
that He felt the need to connect to the source of strength and life first thing in the
day. The beauty of calling upon the Lord very early in the morning is that:
1. We recognize Him as the source of strength and we acknowledge our need for
Him to take care of the day ahead, for we cannot afford to go through the day
without Him.
2. We gain peace, such a peace that only He can give and it surely passes
understanding. The hours are quiet and the mind is fresh and focused.
3. His mercies are new every morning, for this, we need to ask that His mercies
go with us and cover us throughout the day.
4. He is the source of life; it is because of Him and His mercies that we are
awake and not consumed. For these and many other reasons, we ought to call upon
Him early in the morning, directing our praise and requests to Him. He deserves all
the glory and praise.

We walk under the footprints of Jesus Christ our Lord. If He, being God awoke early to go
and pray to the Father to seek for guidance and strength, how much more should
we, weak and feeble beings do the same? What a blessing it is to call upon Him as we
show total dependency on Him!

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our God. Like Your Son Jesus Christ, give us the
strength to seek You early, for in so doing, we find You and You help us through the
day. Give us peace and strength when we call upon You. In the name of Jesus.

One More Year

The year 2021 was one of the worst
years I can think of. It was a year during
which I lost a number of people who
were so dear to me. I can simply say the
year 2021 to me was the year of death.
As a pastor I buried more people than
pastors can ever bury in ten years.
Between the months of May and July
there was a period during which I stood
by an open grave and signalled to the
undertaker to lower the body twice
every week for two weeks straight.
Looking back, I ask myself, how did I
survive such a year?

In Luke chapter 13 a group of people told Jesus about some Galileans whom Pilate had
killed. They seemed to have been suggesting that those Galileans deserved what had
happened to them. When Jesus head that he asked them if it was their view that those
Galileans were the worst sinners in Galilee. Answering his own question Christ said they
were not. He then went on to ask them about the eighteen people who had been crushed to
death by a tower in Jerusalem if they thought those too were the worst sinners in
Jerusalem. Again Jesus answered his own question telling them the answer was no they
were not the worst sinners. Jesus then took that opportunity to teach them about the
living and the dead. He wanted to correct the think of those people who thought people
who die deserve to die and those who remain alive it is because they are good people.

Know Thy Self

I fear being forgotten; I fear to be forgotten;
Bearing witness to echoes of my name fading So I write my own hagiography
into the distance, I aspire to influence the tide
Like a shadow that can no longer touch the Sail towards the siren's call,
light, For I am prepared to risk it all,
Buried, Just to have my name written in stone,
Beneath the dust and cobweb, prose or song,.
Dying a second time.

I fear being forgotten; I fear being forgotten,
So I introduce myself countless times, So constantly I quiz those I feel are amnesia
Plant my name at the back of your head like prone,
conscience to a guilty mind, Like a cornered politician,
I stand out, I ask them if they know who I am,
Create an identity that even I struggle to Deep down I'm conscious of the fact
define, Should they not know my identity,
And let the rest obsess over what manner of I would be lost,
witchcraft gave birth to my desire to be I need them to be constant reminders,
remembered. I need them to remember,
For if I'm lost in their memories,
I fear being forgotten; I will be lost in mine too.
So I dare do what has never been done,
Sometimes I outshine even the master,
Boardering on extremes like a bipolar soul,
Just to avoid finding comfort in mediocrity,
I trade on what is rare and unusual,
And relate with what simple minds cannot
even begin to understand,
Secrets of the universe

And how our world occupies a minute
fraction of Gods hand.

Poem: New season

Gone are the days I felt too cold,
Now is the time with the condition I
can sprout,
I will bloom and be bold.
It is the season where my hard work
will count
Regardless of my age,
Because I'm on a new page.

Poem: Lost

LOST (HERS,)
So here's what happened
I woke in the dead of night your name a silent whisper escaping my lips
The stench of terror cocooning me as I unlatch myself from the horrors
Breaking in cold sweat that feels so dreadful
On instinct my arms reach out to you
Searching in the space that lies unoccupied
Then it hits me like a tidal wave
The realization cutting through me like a double edged knife
There's only I in this space and you are not here to lay waste to the monsters that
plague me at night
And to keep me safe in your warm embrace
The grief of it all overwhelms me once more
I lay back down and let the pillows soak
It hurts so bad that you gone
I would do anything to have you back
Fe…

Poem: Sorrow Song

colour me purple;
sadness trails behind me
like a tracking dog
sniffing out my pitiful scent
rainbow cloak over me
is a facade,
like plastic smiles plastered
on the faces of hungry orphans
watching a monkey dance
for bananas.

colour me purple;
I fight battles in my head,
my yearnings growl,
tears sting my eyes,
oozing out like
honey pregnant hives.
the sparkling crystals
lure pitiful gestures_
I feel trapped in what
they call a sanctuary.

colour me purple
paint me sorrow
I yearn for a tomorrow
that never comes,
with smiles that hurt
I will wait,
but till then...

colour me purple.

Poet: Ticha Comfort
Poem: Domestic violence

What is domestic violence?
Who is domestic violence?
Who defines domestic violence?
Who gets affected by domestic violence?
When do we say domestic violence is?
Let me tell as a victim of marital abuse of power.
It is the intimidation and victimisation I experienced,
Oh yes it can happen to anyone, even to you my dear.
Between spouses, believe you me, it is happening.

Domestic violence is a global cancer,
A cancer that needs to be cured.
The moment one talks about domestic violence,
People rush to think about women,
What about the men, the abused husband
Too ashamed of society to speak out,
Too afraid to be labelled a weakling?
Too many silent murder cases occur in homes.
Let's rise up my people, let’s speak out louder.
Say, No to Domestic Violence.

Poet: Fungai Jayaguru
Poem: Adam in the dam

Last week we attended a show,
The girl child was encouraged to show up,
To speak out and seek help!
Last week we attended a Court session,
The pink's perpetrator was sent to hell,
Eve is in safe hands, today's woman is secured.
This morning I met a brother,
Emotionally bruised and mentally wounded,
A victim of
heart choices,
A victim of Eve's rights.
He broke down; yet no one reached out,
Told his story but no one responded,
The elders only shrugged when his wife roasted his chest with
cooking oil,
No court was attended for his female boss who clapped him
twice, thrice,
Everyone ignored when his female besty peeped through his
shirt,
The police mocked him for being a chicken when he filed in,
The society gave him tags for being a weak man.
Who speaks for the men in pain?
How many advocates are for men's rights?
Who speaks for the wounded Adam?
Where is the equality canoe when Adam is left to drown?
