The Connections Capsule

The capsule exhibition was originally developed for the Year of Irish Design
2015, which promoted Irish architecture and engineering, animation, graphic
design, and fashion around the world.

Designed by Dublin’s Studio Aad, the capsule is an innovative and transporta-
ble solution to showcasing contemporary Irish design in many forms, and
opens to reveal 16 exhibits representing designers and projects across a
broad range of design disciplines.

Kapsul Persambungan

Pameran kapsul awalnya dirancang untuk merayakan Tahun Desain Irlandia

1 Aedín Cosgrove
All That Fall

Aedín’s set and production design for Pan Pan Theatre’s production of Samuel
Beckett’s All That Fall has dazzled audiences and reviewers around the world.
More of an installation than a traditional theatre set, it places the audience in
rocking chairs at the heart of the action and situates the play in the realm of
the imagination.

Desain dan produksi Aedín untuk produksi Pan Pan Theatre dari All That Fall

Joan Bergin and Tom Conroy
Vikings

This epic television show, which is lmed in Ireland, is given much of its authen-
ticity and visual richness thanks to the award-winning creative work of two Irish
designers. Tom Conroy’s evocative production design recreates the world of the
Vikings, while their period clothing and jewellery are captured by costume
designer Joan Bergin.

3 Peter Rice
Centre Georges Pompidou

A structural engineer for Arup, Peter Rice worked with architects Renzo Piano
and Richard Rogers, heading the engineering team on the building of the
iconic Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. With the brightly coloured mechani-
cal systems exposed and integrated into the building’s exterior, Rice’s inven-
tive work with structure and materials was central to the success of the
design.

Lyric Theatre

Constructed on an irregular plot of land in the same red brick as the
surrounding terraces, the Lyric Theatre provides a compelling addition to the
Belfast city landscape. Faceted timber integrates lighting and improves
acoustics in the spacious performance spaces.

The Book of Kells

One of the most famous examples of an illuminated manuscript in the world. Thought to
be produced in the 9th century, it includes 340 folios featuring illustrations, ornamenta-
tion and lettering that far surpass other examples in extravagance and complexity. Housed
in Trinity College Library, Dublin, it continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Cartoon Saloon
The Secret of Kells

An animated fantasy by Cartoon Saloon, the lm gives a ctionalised account of the crea-
tion of the Book of Kells. Drawing on Irish mythology, adventure, poetry and storytelling,
the lm was completely hand drawn and coloured, giving it a vibrant, other-worldly
feeling that recalls the famous book at the centre of the lm.

Rahasia Kel

Sebuah fantasi animasi karya Cartoon Saloon, lm ini menceritkana kisah ksi tentang
penciptaan Kitab Kells. Mengambil mitologi, petualangan, puisi, dan dongeng Irlandia,

lm ini benar-benar digambar dan diwarnai dengan tangan, yang memberinya peras-

Johnny Kelly
Shape film
Commissioned by Dublin City Council and PIVOT Dublin, the aim of the lm was to convey
the role and value of design to children. One of the key constraints was to do this without
words so the message would be universal. The lm shows a day in the life of a family as
their world shifts and changes around them, highlighting design’s role in making their
lives better or worse.

The Lonely Beast app

Chris Judge is a successful illustrator and children’s book author. Pilcrow worked with him to
develop a series of alphabet and counting apps based on the much-loved Lonely Beast character
from his books. The apps are simple, colourful and fun, bringing learning to life through play and
story.
