Recycling : Helping the Earth with Creativity

O-Magazine Volume 4

Volume 4

As we all know, our world goes through constant changes. Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing, we must acknowledge that there are some unsustainable practices and changes that causes harm to our environment, whether it’s the ground, the air, or the sea. In this moment, one of the best ways to fight it is by recycling or upcycling waste materials into something more creative and/useful. If you are intrested in recycling then you’ve come to the right place: in this volume of OMagazine, we are going to talk about recycling! How to do it, why you should do it, examples of recycling, etc. Enjoy!

Have you ever seen one of those trash cans in public that separates between plastic, glass, paper, etc? Recycling involves the process of breaking raw waste material in order to make something new, and so, some companies separates each types of trash to make it easier for them to transform the wastes into something new! For example, these pair of sandals made out of ocean debris! 4

These old glass bottles being used as flower vases is one of the examples. The bottles didnt go through any breaking nor did it lose its shape, but it also served more use than just throwing it away! As mentioned before, upcycling is a process of turning old things or waste materials into new things without breaking them. In other words, using an unused items or wastes as something more inovated. 5

7 Whoosh. That’s the sound the world around her makes when she cycles past every building, being quick and careful at the same time. “Practice at 06.10, don’t be late.” She reminds herself back and forth, parking her bike and rushing to class. Though it appears she was— very –early, as the decent old clock shows 05.50, twenty minutes before practice. She sighs in both relief, and annoyance. “No one even showed up yet.” She says, unpacking her backpack. “Parker, you here yet??” she called out to her junior. No one answers. She was completely alone. Bored, she decides to buy something random from her School Foundation’s mini bookstore, completely ignoring the fact that it probably won’t be open ‘til 8. Heading there, she realizes the paths are a bit filthy, full of trash and worthless papers scattered across the ground, yet no one is picking them up. “huh, that’s odd…..” she thinks for a moment before saying “eh, whatever.” And heading off to the bookstore. Not surprised, the bookstore was still closed, and she had nothing else to do, other than feel bad about the dirty floor. “Hey Elle—” Gavin greeted her, scaring her as well in the process. “What’re you staring at?” She points to the ground as she stammers her words. Gavin was, also, surprised. Usually the janitors tidy up the mess. “Is it because yesterday was a weekend?” “Probably, but there aren’t supposed to be people here in the weekend. Well, other than the boarding school students—I suppose.” He added. There was a sudden silence in between their conversation, confused by it, Gavin

8 As they head off to school, they notice more and more trash scattered on the ground, the field wasn’t even safe from the trash frenzy! “Well this is a problem” The principle said. “So what can we do about it?” Elle asked. “well we can-” The principle paused. He turned to look at the two students. “Well, what do you think we should do?” The two kids looked at each other. The two thought for a moment. “We can… tell them to throw the trash into the trash can?” Gavin answered. “Yeah but how will we tell them? We cant just go to every single person in the school’s foundation and say ‘throw your trash in the right place you ding dong!!!’Besides, even if we can, we wont be able to do so in such short notice.” Elle added. “Why don’t we use posters instead? Posters, signs, articles, slogans, things like that. It’d be simpler, quicker and more— y’know!” She suggested. “hm, well done Elle! Now, final question, Who will be making them?” the two went silent. Elle turned to look at Gavin, your turn to say something, she mouthed. “why not all of us? Everyone at school. Maybe we can even make a poster competition! I can arrange it with the student council.” “great idea Gavin! Why don’t we start tomorrow? Is that good?” Mr. Sheldon made sure. The kids smiled in complete happiness, they solved a problem, all on their own. turned to Elle to see why, making Elle— who was mesmerized by Gavin—to turn away in startle and fluster. “Have you talked to Mr. Sheldon about it?” Gavin asked, as she was the first of them to arrive at school. She shook her head in response. The two then went to plead their complaint.

Days past, scenes changed, the whole school foundation was decorated with unique posters and signs, some hyper pop, pastel, vintage, and more. Various templates, various colors, but with one meaning and one objective, ‘maintain your surroundings, ‘keep your surroundings and facilities clean' and most importantly, ‘protect the environment’. All the students and teachers were gathered in the auditorium (aula). They were all gathered to celebrate the success of AHA Goes Green, which is the name of the project to prevent trash and waste being scattered in the environment’. “okay, everyone I’d like to give everyone here a thank you, for participating in our AHA Goes Green activity-events, and helped us clean our surroundings and environment and helped prevent waste of plastic as well.” Mr. Sheldon announced. The announcement continued, and turned into a speech, which then turned into a lecture. Luckily some student council were there to prevent the speech from going unheard by giving little mini games midspeech. 9 Finally, the speech was done. The students got ready to head down to class, when suddenly Mr. Sheldon asked to stay for a couple more minutes. “before you all go, I’d like to honor two students who came to notice this problem, please welcome, Ellie [redacted] and Gavin [redacted]!” the two went up stage. They were given two crowns. One made out of recycled plastic, unused ropes, and painted with unused paint, giving an abstract color combination. The other, made out of dry leaves, paper flowers, and cuts of origami. Then they went home and had a happily ever after
