Why Students Should Have Mental Health Days By: Hailey Hardcastle

Link Video of Ted Talk from Youtube 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch? si=derNGgMyvMiL_EBh&v=1qq7lDLbzY&feature=youtu.be Let's go!

About the Speaker Hailey Hardcastle In 2019, Hailey Hardcastle and her team passed a law in Oregon that allows students to take a mental health day off from school, the same way one would a sick day. Now, she's working to expand the law to other states and bring more comprehensive mental health resources to classrooms

What is Mental Health? Our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing all contribute to our mental health. It has an impact on how we think, feel, and act. It also influences how we deal with stress, interact with others, and make decisions. Mental health is essential throughout life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. If you have mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior may be affected throughout your life. Page 02/11

Everyone’s Mental Health Matters Hailey emphasizes that everyone has a brain, and just like we take care of our bodies, we should take care of our mental health. Mental health can affect our physical well-being too.

Her Personal Experience She shares her own experiences with mental health challenges and how she and others approached these issues.

Forming a Committee Hailey and others formed a group called "Students for a Healthy Oregon" to end the stigma around mental health in schools.

Making Mental Health a Priority They worked to make mental health a top priority in schools, highlighting its importance.

Advocacy for Mental Health Days They lobbied and campaigned for a law called House Bill 2191, which allows students to take days off from school for mental health reasons.

Success Their efforts paid off, and the bill became law in 2019. This means students in Oregon can now take mental health days when needed

Youth Suicide Concern Hailey also mentions that youth suicide rates are a big concern in Oregon, making the need for mental health support even more critical.

In a nutshell, Hailey Harfcastle's TED Talk is about recognizing the importance of mental health for students, reducing the stigma around it, and advocating for students to have the option of taking mental health days to care for their wellbeing
