provides students with opportunities to explore a variety of health careers and make
realistic and satisfying career choices. Whether a student is skilled in scientific research
and design, clinical laboratory procedures, written and verbal communication skills, or is
skilled in caring for people, career options are available to match these individual interests
and abilities.

The Bel Air Center for Health Professions is affiliated with Del Sol Medical Center,
University Medical Center and Sierra Providence East, as well as other health care
facilities such as clinics, private practices, and elementary schools where students shadow
a health care provider and experience the health care environment.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Anatomy and Physiology provides students with the
information needed to build upon allied health
classes and clinical experiences.

Students should not view this course as a hurdle to
cross.

As students jump across a hurdle, in essence, they
return to the same level as they started before
jumping.

Anatomy and Physiology course is an early step on
the ladder that represents their knowledge.

Students may move successfully to the next rung
when they have a solid footing on the rung below.

What is Anatomy & Physiology?

Anatomy is the study of the structures associated with the human body. Physiology is the
study of the function of each of these structures.

Why is it important?

The relationship between health care providers and patients is essential. Patients seek care because an
organ or organ system is not functioning properly in their body. In order to treat them well, medical
practitioners must first understand how the body functions when it is healthy.

 Students of health care need to understand how the effected body
system normally functions. Then they may understand how to treat
illnesses and why the treatment works.

 Health care providers need to be able to explain these things to
patients in a way that patients can understand. When a
practitioner understands something poorly, they may not provide
satisfactory explanations.

 Organ systems are so interconnected that a disease in one
system may result in a symptom in another system. Without
seeing the normal interconnectedness, health professionals
cannot fully understand the disease.

The Dental Program provides students with an exciting experience in the many
fields of Dentistry. Students in the Dental Program will work side by side as
