About IMEC
The International Medical Education
Conference (IMEC) is a forum for
forging and renewing friendships
between educators of healthcare
professions from around the world;
a platform to exchange ideas and
experience and showcase innovations.
It is usually held in March/April every
year for two days (to coincide with
the Annual Academic Council of the
IMU), preceded by Pre-Conference
Workshops the day before.
The theme changes with each
conference and this year’s theme is
Health Professions Education
without Borders

WELCOME It is both my privilege and pleasure
MESSAGE FROM to welcome delegates from over 30
THE DEPUTY countries to the 12th International
MINISTER Medical Education Conference 2017. This
OF HIGHER international conference will have many
EDUCATION international speakers who are experts
in their areas, and participants from all
parts of the world, and especially, this
region, sharing their experiences, at the
same time, triggering many stimulating
discussions. This will be an extra special
conference looking at the theme of
Health Professional Education without
Borders, the very principle IMU is
built upon.
This meeting brings together health
professional educators, clinicians,
researchers and policy makers in an
international forum, enabling the
exchange of the latest advances in health
professions education.
As advances in communication and
technology bring us closer, globalisation
of healthcare standards is inevitable.
The twenty rst century healthcare
professionals should have global
credentials yet sensitive to cultural and
local values and needs. To be borderless,
health professions education has to
look at international accreditation and
standards, models of health professions
education partnership and their impact
on healthcare services, the use of
technology-enhanced learning in
promoting personalised learning,
assessments, inter-professional education,
healthcare equity and distribution.
9H E A L T H P R O F E S S I O N S E D U C AT I O N W I T H O U T B O R D E R S
Being borderless may have immense
impact in the training of future
healthcare professions; the liberalisation/
democratisation of values, regulations,
cultural norms and standardisation of
educational outcomes. In this day and
age, it may be important for educational
institutions to adopt shared standards
and criteria for graduating global health
professionals.
This conference will look at the various
aspects of health professions education
without borders, and how this may
improve healthcare worldwide. Once
again, I would like to offer my warmest
welcome to all delegates to Malaysia at
this conference.
Thank you.
Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr.
Mary Yap Kain Ching, JP
Deputy Minister of Higher Education
