Let’ s Educate Children In Need
“Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow”
2017
Annual Report
2016-17
From the
President's
Desk
I had never thought that I would do something like starting my own NGO during my graduation. I feel
elated to have this opportunity to work with youngsters who are mostly school and college students. We
work together intensively to bring out a positive change in the society and in ourselves as well. This journey
of two years has taught me a lot of things about life and has made me a better person. Teaching more than a
hundred children from four slums of Delhi and working with seventy volunteers from various colleges and
twenty organizations has been a delightful experience. The main motive of launching the annual report,
Pragati, is to make people aware about our work, things we have done till now, our vision and future plans,
and to make people understand how our small contribution can make a big difference in someone's life. It
would be our pleasure if we are successful in changing a person's mindset about working in social sector
through this initiative.
My primary motivations are children’s dreams and aspirations, their enthusiasm to achieve big in their
lives, and my team, which works together as a family.
Message for the youth- There is a lot to explore out of the box. Don’t be afraid to take risks in life. College
days are the best time to dissect the opportunities you might be looking for. The world is full of possibilities
and chances; we just need to find the right ones for us. I have never felt that I am doing any social work by
teaching the unfortunate children. Instead, I have identified myself and gained a lot in this whole process.
- Nupur Bhardwaj
PRAGATI 2017 1
From the
Vice President's
DDeeskk
Full of joy, learning and achievements, LECIN has successfully completed two years of youth passion and
dedication to bring out a change in the society. Through the first edition of Pragati, Annual Report of
LECIN, I congratulate each member of the organization for making this journey inspiring and motivating.
I believe that each day comes with a new learning and each learning pushes us towards being better as a
person. Similarly, working with LECIN improves me with each passing day. These two years were a
complete package of celebrations and achievements. Started with less than ten members, now we have
more than sixty volunteers who are committed as the change makers of the society. Working on 'soul'
instead of 'scale', we learned how to maintain balance between the two.
Today, I can proudly say that my leadership journey has been initiated and is blooming with each passing
day, through this organization. Leadership, in itself, is a bunch of skills and learning experiences.
Through this edition of Pragati, we have tried to bring together all the positive stories of change and all the
learning experiences. I would like to thank Saumya Agrawal, Head of the Content Writing Department
and Aditya Nair, Head of the Graphic Designing Department for their outstanding work that helped us
launch Pragati on our Annual Day- Unnati'17.
Further, I would like to extend my love and best wishes to the whole LECIN Family, children from the
slums and to all the readers.

ABOUT US
Let's Educate Children In Need (LECIN) is a Delhi based non-profit organization led by the
students from various colleges of the capital. Its foundation was laid on 31st May, 2015 by Nupur
Bhardwaj, with a motive to provide quality education to the underprivileged children residing in
slums, who neither have assets nor opportunity to go to school and study. LECIN first began
working at Indraprastha slum in 2015 after which, it grew its roots in Okhla, Mansarovar Park and
Kalkaji slums. The organization aims to impart thorough knowledge and values among children
through extra-curricular activities by arranging sessions such as GyanMudra, Kalakriti and
Naitikta and has been organizing such events and functions on regular basis in order to enhance
their skills in various fields for their overall development.
Vision: We aim to provide quality elementary education to the slum children who are
deprived of basic amenities by giving them a platform to bring out the best in them so that they
can stand independent in life.
Indraprastha Slum
LECIN began its work in Indraprastha Slum in May 2015. Initially, teaching sessions consisted
mainly of general academic awareness. Tests have been conducted regularly to identify and
segregate students who wish to study so as to make
teaching sessions more effective. Teachers have
been working to prepare a well-defined curriculum.
Each session consisted of two subjects-English and
Maths, with one hour dedicated to each subject.
Proper session plans were made and coordinators
were appointed to conduct smooth functioning of
the sessions. The sessions covered NCERT
textbooks, basic rules of language and some fun activities in order to help the students have a
better understanding of the concepts.
Till date, regular feedbacks are being taken from the students as well as the volunteers to create a
transparent environment. Further, a test of 45 minutes for each subject is conducted at the end of
each month to get an idea of the students' performance. The first session of each month is a
Kalakriti session, which focuses on the art and craft abilities of the students. Many educational
trips are also conducted from time to time. Roobaru sessions are also conducted which focus on
one-on-one interaction of volunteers and students to get the children out of their shells.
So far, this initiative has focused on thirteen children and has proved to be a huge success.
PRAGATI 2017 3
Okhla Slum
Work in Okhla slum started in July 2015. Like every initiative, there were many issues which
needed to be sorted. For instance, there was a shortage of volunteers due to the reluctance of
people associating themselves with a non-profit
organization. This resulted in the inability to meet
the targets and to handle a large number of students.
Further, there were some children who had no
interest in learning something new. These children
disturbed the classes and disrupted the smooth
functioning of the sessions. Many efforts were made
in making them realize the importance of education.
Some of them understood the point and started taking the sessions seriously. Eventually, sixteen
children were enrolled under LECIN as they began participating actively in class interactions and
completed their home-works religiously.
There was another major issue- unavailability of a proper space to conduct the sessions.
Volunteers had been using a temple for this purpose. However, the temple owners were against all
such activities inside the temple premises. But, after talking to the authorities at the community,
this problem was sorted.
Today, full-fledged sessions of English and Mathematics are being held at Okhla slum which
include studies, interactive sessions and fun activities. It is a matter of immense pride that all the
students take full advantage of the sessions and that this initiative is gaining so much momentum.
Mansarovar Park Slum
The living conditions of the residents of Mansarovar Park slum came into the notice of volunteers
in May 2016. LECIN associated itself with Mansarovar Park slum in June 2016. To start with,
there were numerous issues that had to be dealt with. The children in the slum had no source of
education, lacked basic manners and cleanliness and sanitation in the area were minimal. The
worst part was that nobody-neither the authorities,
nor the residents themselves were making any
efforts to change their situation.
Hence, when the volunteers tried to uplift their
condition (focusing mainly on children), they
showed lack of interest by being irregular and
undisciplined during the sessions. So, it was
decided, that before academic proficiency, the
4 PRAGATI 2017
children need to be taught basic moral values-good and bad habits, polite conduct, importance of
cleanliness etc., which is how Naitikta sessions started here. Gradually, the sessions became more
formal and are now called GyanMudra. Fourteen children of age group 8 to 16 were sorted to focus
upon. Videos, charts and many of fun activities were used to make the sessions more interactive.
Now, with the sheer determination and positive outlook of all volunteers, it has been observed that
there has been a slight shift in the attitude of the children. They have started taking the sessions
seriously and are being more regular in attending classes.
However, there still are many critical issues which need to be resolved. For instance, one of the
students was found begging at a metro station. Volunteers are trying to raise awareness about the
importance of education among children and their families. All such issues are being taken into
consideration to take necessary actions accordingly.
Kalkaji Slum
President Nupur Bhardwaj, being a B. Tech. (Computer Science) student herself, always dreamt of
introducing the underprivileged children to computers who may, otherwise, never know what a
computer is. This is how the idea of giving a hands-on learning of computers to slum children
began. This initiative was named Saksham and was started with ten children of Kalkaji slum in
November 2016.
Since this was an absolutely new concept for the children, the volunteers had to work very hard in
order to design a curriculum for the same. Also, it was felt that rather than theoretical, a practical
and hands-on approach should be followed so that the children may learn how to actually use a
computer. In order to do this, the volunteers made them understand the concepts by linking them
to real-life examples. Although it was very difficult for the volunteers to simplify the concepts for
the children, they showed pure dedication and taught the students by befriending them.
Ramanujan College has supported project Saksham by permitting the volunteers to take practical
sessions in its computer lab. The students were
overjoyed when they were allotted computer
systems of their own.
This initiative has been fairly successful as the
children now know how to use softwares like MS
Word and MS Paint. They also know the advantages
and disadvantages of a computer and its importance
in our lives.
Apart from teaching the softwares, the volunteers involved the children in computer games and
movies so that they do not get bored and get to know the fun side of computers.
PRAGATI 2017 5
OUR INITIATIVES
GyanMudra
“आज दल को सुकू न से जी लेने दो, मुझे उड़ने दो, मुझे पढ़ने दो”
The initiative of GyanMudra comprises of systematic teaching sessions based on a meticulously
devised curriculum prepared by the volunteers. The volunteers cater to the needs of every learner,
whether the child is a visual, auditory, kinesthetic or tactile learner by using the means of activity
based or audio and visual based learning. The children taught are between the ages of 8-16. The
smaller children are taught the fundamentals of English, Hindi and Mathematics according to the
curriculum while for the older children, prescribed NCERT books are followed.
At Indraprastha and Okhla slums, children learnt place value of numbers through a game where
they were allotted different numbers; the teacher called a number and students were supposed to
arrange themselves according to the digit's value. Volunteers worked upon the pronunciation and
articulation of students in English. They helped them channelize their thoughts so as they're able
to put them into writing eloquently. They enhanced
their speaking skills by performing plays and
improvising advertisements and a myriad of other
activities. At Mansarovar slum, children were taught
the Hindi varnmala with the help of a video. At
Kalkaji slum, a number of activities related to day-
today lives of the students are carried out to teach
them the use of computers and its advantages and
disadvantages. Volunteers would give them
homework and conduct regular tests, which they
checked forthwith and discussed their mistakes with them. After every session, they would ask the
children to give their feedback as to what all they like about the respective sessions and what all
they would like to learn.
GyanMudra sessions have successfully provided the students a classroom environment which
gives them a sense of involvement with the help of various audio-visual activities.
Kalakriti
“उड़ते है हम रंग भर नगर म”
A child lives in a galaxy of his own, in a land far away
from our planet. His mind is the embodiment of
eccentricity and his heart, a place of pure love.
Kalakriti sessions are devoted to realizing the caliber
of slum children in art and molding their personality
by the aid of a plethora of art forms. This initiative
aims to expand the horizons of the children; to let
them fly into a dreamland created by their own
imagination in virtue of which, they contribute
6 PRAGATI 2017
towards their overall personality development. At Indraprastha slum, Kalakriti sessions were
held on a regular basis. Students made fishes and other animals through origami. They
incorporated their own ideas of making fins of
different colors, etc. and personalized their origami
fishes. During the Kalakriti session that took place in
the Mansarovar Park slum in January 2016, children
drew the tricolor on the occasion of Republic Day
and learned about the history of India. At Kalkaji
slum, children painted their dreams on sparkling
white sheets. This gave the volunteers a path to the
aspirations of children as they learnt about how
children held onto dreams: to open a dance academy, to open a school and to learn, grow, blossom
and achieve success. Students of Okhla slum made ladybugs and pen stands, drew castles, the
faces of their parents and many other things. These sessions have helped the volunteers to
comprehend the notions of children in a different light so that, they can work towards grooming
their personality and help them achieve their dreams.
Naitikta
“तमु भी सवर जाओगे, दु नया बदल जाओगे”
A person, who was educated in school to condemn the appalling practice of Dowry, grows up and
demands it from his fiancée's family anyway. A little boy read in his books that it is absolutely
crucial to preserve our planet; but he grew up and threw garbage on the street anyway. A child
educated to be a good human, grew up and left that education behind him. Education is not
enough. We have to make children feel compassion,
help them sensitize and empathize, and plant these
seeds in their hearts, so that it blossoms into strong
rooted trees of good morals and ethics. Naitikta
sessions aim to do the same by the aid of pursuits like
storytelling, movie screening, skits, plays and a lot of
other activities. In all four slums, the volunteers told
different stories and helped children recognize
values from the same. They were asked about how
they feel certain characters must have behaved in the stories and what they would have done if
they had been in their place. In order to teach the students at Mansarovar Park slum, how thieving
is immoral, they were made to role-play as a thief to realize the philosophy of this wrongdoing.
Roobaru
“च लए अब होते ह एक दजू े से ब ”
Roobaru sessions are organized to build amities between volunteers and children, so that the
children develop a connection with them and are able to express themselves candidly.
Interactions with students on an individual basis have allowed the volunteers to befriend with
students. Initially, students hesitated, but with time, they came out of their shells. Volunteers and
children had gone on an educational trip to National Science Centre and explored the mysteries of
PRAGATI 2017 7
the universe. They also visited Humayun's Tomb where they journeyed through the Mughal times
as they learnt new things and made new friends.
Roobaru sessions are also held for all the members of different departments to discuss
achievements, difficulties, future plans and goals as well as to know each other better. These
sessions cater to the development of all the members, the children and the organization itself. At
one of these meets, the members discussed the various different learning styles of people referring
to the fact that every individual has their own way of grasping a concept.
The volunteers came up with innovative activities that involved the features of all learning styles to
teach the children more efficaciously. Trips to Old Fort, the zoo and Agra have been organized
under Roobaru exclusively for the members. Roobaru sessions are light hearted and convivial
sessions where every individual is free to share their thoughts. They have helped individuals to
expand their horizons and explore a realm of dynamism.

In July 2016, a clothes donation drive was organized at the Mansarovar Park slum with a purpose
to donate old clothes to the people of the slum who
don't have the basic amenities of life like food and
clothing. The event was held on a large scale with
clothes being donated by the people from all over
Delhi. Rajkumar Tiwari, an ice skating gold medalist
in Special Olympics, was invited as the chief guest
along with his brother, Manjesh Tiwari. Sai Sanskaar
Foundation and Jazba Theatre Group supported the
cause along with the media coverage by various
prestigious news channels.
TOBACC'GO
An anti-tobacco campaign was run by Rotaract Club of Sri Aurobindo College in collaboration
with LECIN in three phases, i.e., in August,
September and October in Indraprastha slum,
Okhla slum and Mansarovar Park slum respectively.
The campaign involved visiting door to door and
making the slum dwellers aware about the damaging
consequences of tobacco and smoking. Doctors were
called to counsel those victims who were willing to
quit tobacco but were unable to. Medicines were
provided to the addicted sufferers. A street play was
performed by Moksh, the dramatics club of Sri
Aurobindo College, to make people understand with
a greater effect. Our team visited the slums for a review a week later and found the changing
mindset of the people. They had started to adapt a positive attitude towards the cause.
Dengue Awareness Campaign
Dengue Awareness Campaign is yet another
initiative taken by LECIN to spread understanding
about the dengue mosquito, deadly effects of its bite
and the prevention. The campaign was run in two
phases; one in Okhla slum and the other one in
Indraprastha slum in September 2016. Its aim was to
bring to the notice of slum dwellers the harmful
effects of dengue mosquito bite on one's health. The
team visited door to door to invite people to watch a
PRAGATI 2017 11
skit on the prevention of Dengue, written, directed
and performed by the members of the team. Dr.
Neha Talwar from Hindu Rao Hospital, also a
member of the LECIN team, engaged the people in
an interactive session about health and hygiene.
Later, the volunteers from LECIN performed a skit
on dengue fever, as a part of the campaign. People
thoroughly listened to the volunteers. It was a
successful event for the team.
Joy of Giving: Daan Utsav
In collaboration with Sai Sanskar Foundation and
Rasoi On Wheels, freshly cooked and hygienically
packed meals were distributed to over two hundred
slum children and ladies. Daan Utsav, aimed at
feeding fresh food to the poor and the needy, was
organized in two phases; first, at the Kalkaji slum
and second, near Connaught Place in October 2016.
People were taught lessons about hygiene,
cleanliness, sharing and basic etiquettes, which were
obeyed by everyone. Surplus meal packets were
distributed to the beggars and homeless people
around the area. The volunteers made a great team to make the drives successful by distributing
more than 400 food packets in both the areas.
Pledge For Equality
December 16th, 2012 was a black day for India. An evening when the national capital, Delhi,
witnessed the gang rape and death of a twenty three year old physiotherapy intern, Jyoti Singh.
Team LECIN offered deep condolences in remembrance of the incident and initiated a campaign
in which people pledged for women's safety and empowerment and raised their voices against any
such happenings. All the members of the organization as well as people outside the organization
displayed their individual pledges as their profile pictures and shared them on social media.
WORKSHOPS
Bobo Aur Jojo Ka Circus
Bobo Aur Jojo Ka Circus was organized by two
energetic performers, Aakash Hingorani and Aarti
Vasan, at the Mansarovar Park slum on 23rd

fun activity for the kids who laughed and became a
12 PRAGATI 2017
part of the performance making the most of it. The show helped in recreation and harmonious
development of the children.
Alfaazon ki Jugalbandhi
Alfaazon ki Jugalbandhi is the creative writing
workshop held by the Content Writing Team. The
motive of this workshop is to make children think in a
creative manner out of their little world and express
their thoughts in innovative way. The first session
was held in the Indraprastha slum in January 2017.
Children chosen for the workshop were more
imaginative than was thought. From meeting their
favourite actors to saving the world from terrorism,
one page was not enough to hold their thoughts.
Their confidence was expressive in their writing. Similar workshops are being planned to be
carried out in all the slums in near future.

Raddi
Raddi is an initiative which was started in the month
of November 2016. It involves collecting old
newspapers and old books (raddi), from people who
are willing to donate, and then selling this raddi, to
raise funds for buying stationery and other resources
for underprivileged children. Monthly drives are
held in the areas of Dwarka, Malviya Nagar, Lajpat
Nagar and North Campus by the volunteers. A drive
was also held in Maharaja Agrasen College in March
2017. Challenges were faced in this initiative, the biggest being lack of awareness among people
about Raddi. To increase awareness, orientations are being planned at college events and other
similar campaigns to inform people about the initiative as wells as the organisation. This will help
to engage more volunteers and donors in Raddi. Raddi has proven to be a successful initiative
since it has helped to raise the funds needed to purchase the necessities that are significant for
teaching the underprivileged children.
Mudra
Mudra is another initiative taken to raise monthly funds. Anyone can donate ₹1 per day or ₹30 on
any day of a month, to the organization and help in purchasing of basic stationery for the kids in the
communities. This initiative was started in the month of February 2017. Mudra has become
successful in just a span of few months, having more than 70 regular donors who have contributed
monthly to the organization. These donors donate every month happily and have helped make this
initiative a success. Difficulties were faced in spreading awareness about the initiative. Promotions
through various platforms like college events and social media like WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter,
etc. have helped to tackle the problem. Collaborations with other likeminded people and
organizations in the future will help increase the reach and help more and more deprived children.
Saksham
Started in December 2016 with a motive to provide
computer education to the technologically
challenged children from the slums in Delhi, project
Saksham was, initially, a step forward in spreading
digitalization on our part. The idea was first put
forward by the president, Nupur, which was funded
by an organization, Pravah, under the Changelooms
Learning and Leadership Journey (CLLJ) 2016-17.
Specially trained teachers visit Kalkaji slum every weekend to conduct computer classes with a
well planned curriculum and topics, which helps a few selected children learn the basics of the
technical world they are living in. Saksham plans to impart both, theoretical as well as practical
knowledge to the young ones. Members from the core committee regularly visit the teaching
center to keep a check on the problems and issues faced by the teachers and the students.

CHANGELOOMS LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP JOURNEY
2016-17
Changelooms Learning and Leadership Journey 2016-17 was a nine month Fellowship which
involved various non-profit organizations from different cities of India. Nupur Bhardwaj who is
the founder and president of LECIN, along with Rohit Kumar, the vice-president, was invited for
the end project ceremony as Changeloomers for the year 2016-17.
The main impact of the journey, as experienced by Nupur and Rohit, is as follows-
1. Enhancement of leadership skills
2. Distributed leadership
3. Learnings, which include designing and facilitating sessions
4. Importance of making mistakes and declaration of mistakes
5. Different learning styles of a person
6. Relationship building
Nupur told about how the programme impacted her in her life, “I have become more patient in
nature. I have started observing and sharing my mistakes with other members of the team.”
Rohit added that he learnt to lead the organization in a better way by knowing the insights of
'leadership' as a subject.
Youthsav, a cultural event, organized on the last day of the Changelooms journey, involved a skit
prepared by the Changeloomers to showcase the struggles and challenges they face in their lives as
a social worker/activist and how Changelooms programme helped them stand and manage their
organizations. The play caught everyone's interest and inspired all the members present for the
event who wish to bring a change in the society through their work but couldn't find a way to plan
and execute their ideas.
Twenty two Changeloomers from selected eleven organizations from all over the country were
invited to participate as anchors and co-anchors. Project Saksham, free computer classes to the
slum children, was started by LECIN in Kalkaji, Delhi. The idea was proposed during the earlier
sessions of Changelooms program, which is now being implemented successfully by the
organization.
