Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Behind-the-scenes Labour Ward ‘BEHIND-THE-SCENES’ STORIES Labour Ward I have always had a deep interest in the miracle of childbirth and a strong yearning to support women during this lifechanging time. I have had the privilege of assisting many women through their pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. I believe that creating a nurturing and supportive environment allows these women to feel heard, respected, and well-cared for. Being a midwife is not only a profession to me, but it is also a calling. I am honoured to be part of such a significant chapter in the lives of the women I serve here in Raffles Hospital. SSN II Nicole Chloe Thomas Labour Ward

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 ‘BEHIND-THE-SCENES’ STORIES Labour Ward Working in a delivery ward generally includes assisting with the safe and smooth delivery of babies, and providing care and support to both the mother and newborn. This includes monitoring of vital signs, administering medication, assisting with pain management, and providing emotional support to the mother. In addition, we assist the obstetricians with the delivery process, perform necessary crucial medical interventions, and handle life-threatening emergencies that may arise. It is a challenging but rewarding environment that requires strong teamwork, good communication skills, and undivided attention to patient care. Delivering babies can be an emotionally intense experience for all healthcare professionals involved. Witnessing the birth of a child can elicit feelings of happiness, fulfilment, and a sense of amazement at the miracle of life. It can also be very rewarding to provide support and care during such a significant moment in a family’s life. However, there will also be challenges and emotional stress involved. Healthcare professionals may encounter difficult or complicated deliveries, medical emergencies, or instances of loss, which are very emotionally taxing. There was one particular incident that left an impression on me. It was during one night shift in the labour ward and we were caring for a woman who was in active labour. My role as a midwife was to provide her with guidance, reassurance, and medical support throughout her labour. Several long hours passed, and the patient’s labour drew close to the finishing line. When the time came for her to push, we encouraged and cheered her on. With each push, her determination grew, and the room was filled with anticipation and support from the labour ward team. Finally, the miraculous moment came when the baby made its grand entrance into the world. The room filled with joy and relief as we welcomed the little one into the loving arms of its mother. However, shortly after the delivery, I noticed excessive bleeding that signalled a potential complication. I called for additional assistance from my colleagues while simultaneously taking immediate action to control the bleeding. Applying gentle uterine massage and administering medications to aid in uterine contraction and stop the bleeding. It was a race against time, as we needed to stabilise the patient’s condition swiftly before she loses too much blood and her condition becomes critical. Despite the intensity of the situation, the teamwork and collaboration in the room was remarkable, with everyone working together to save the patient’s life. After several crucial moments, the bleeding finally subsided, and her vital signs stabilised. The relief that washed over the room was palpable. We had successfully managed the postpartum haemorrhage and averted a potentially life-threatening situation. This experience highlights the importance of early detection, swift intervention, and effective teamwork in managing postpartum haemorrhage. It also reinforces my passion for midwifery and strengthened my love for providing care to every woman who entrusts me with their birth. It is in times like these that continually motivate me to be the best midwife I can be, re-affirming my commitment to staying current with best practices, continuing professional advancement, and ensuring I am always well-prepared to handle any obstetric emergency that may arise. Ultimately, seeing the patient recover and knowing that I played a part in not only bringing her child into this world, but also saving her life, fills me with an intense sense of purpose and reinforces my devotion to providing the highest level of care to the patients I serve. I have great love for my job, and it fills me every day with a sense of purpose and happiness. The ability to make connections with people, give them support during significant moments, and witness the power of my profession is truly amazing. I have the chance to continually grow, learn, and excel in providing care for these patients here in Raffles. It is a privilege and an honour to be able to pursue my passion, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact and touch the lives of those I serve.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 ‘BEHIND-THE-SCENES’ STORIES Raffles Nursing Scholar Behind-the-scenes Raffles Nursing Scholar SN Tang Lian Kwang, Paul Ward 10 Meet Paul Tang, Raffles Nursing Scholar. He had just graduated from four years of study in Bachelor of Science (Nursing) with Honours from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Currently, he is working at Ward 10. His hobbies include trekking outdoors, training in gym, playing the piano, and reading non-fiction books. He is interested in nursing research, specifically on mental health of nurses. Let’s get to know more about his journey towards nursing. It was not an immediate calling to me. Back then I was studying Diploma in Biomedical Science at Republic Polytechnic. Like many young bright minds, I wanted to be a doctor as it was an honourable career, and doctors are highly respected in healthcare. However, things took a turn when my mental health was affected by the high expectations of academics and cocurricular activities (CCA) that I was involved in. My parents refused to let me enrol into NUS medicine and that led me to consider other professions in healthcare. After exploring different professions through friends and school fairs, I was inspired to join nursing as I was fascinated by the idea that nurses are the backbone of the healthcare team when decisions are communicated to nurses as the main point of contact and care is mostly delivered by nurses to patients. What inspired you to be a nurse? What encouraged you to sign up for the Raffles Medical Group (RMG) scholarship? At the time I was considering scholarships. The scholarships that attracted me were from MOHH and RMG. Both provided monthly allowances and four years of sponsored tuition fees among other benefits. However, what stood out to me about the RMG scholarship was the Raffles Management Associate Programme (MAP) where I get to rotate among different nursing departments in Raffles Hospital, Raffles Medical clinics, and even non-nursing departments in a short span of two to three years. This was unlike the MOHH scholarship where you are posted to a ward and one can only rotate upon request after working there for one year. It was in a sense more difficult if I wanted to explore different nursing specialities before I commit to one. Hence, I decided to sign up with RMG. How has your journey in RMG been as a scholar? As an NUS student, I was posted to Raffles Hospital for most of my attachments. I had been to Ward 13, Ward 10, Ward 9, OT, and Ward 8 paediatrics. I also did my temporary job attachment at ICU during my school holidays. The experiences I had gained during my student attachments had been pleasant. The work culture here was very positive, and my colleagues were kind and friendly. My clinical instructor was supportive of my learning and the preceptors I was tagged to were patient and provided helpful guidance when I took on cases. As part of the MAP programme, I was tagged to Chief Nurse, Lilian Yew, as my mentor for professional growth. Despite her busy schedule, she made time to meet up at different stages of my learning, provided her perspectives on certain topics that I am interested in, and guided me on career paths

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 in Raffles Hospital that I am considering. As a result, I felt very prepared to take on the role of a staff nurse knowing what to expect from the work environment that I will be posted to at the start of my career. What is one thing you would like to say to students who are considering the RMG scholarship? The RMG scholarship is worth considering if you aspire to make an impact in the private sector. There are many opportunities to expose yourself to different specialities in both acute and outpatient settings. Furthermore, there are career progression and tracks in Raffles Hospital that you can consider. The working culture here is positive and the management is very supportive in developing their staff. Being a relatively smaller hospital as compared to the restructured hospitals in Singapore, this would mean a greater sense of camaraderie among your colleagues and superiors. What have you done to achieve the valedictorian of your cohort? It happened when I was told that I was nominated as one of the candidates and had to submit my curriculum vitae for it. Without much thought, I went for it and the rest was history. In hindsight, I was grateful to have been selected as the main valedictorian for my school, which included graduates from Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Science (Nursing) with Honours, Bachelor of Science (Nursing Practice), Master of Nursing, and Doctor of Philosophy – Nursing. I believe that my involvement in the school community, passion for service, and academic excellence made me a suitable candidate as a valedictorian representing the graduating class of 2022/2023. Through my journey as a student nurse for four years and taking on leadership roles in my CCA, I was able to reflect on the struggles and accomplishments that my cohort achieved. Hence, I could represent the voice of my cohort in speaking to the public at the end of our learning journey and a new beginning of our careers. You have received a total of 8 awards during the graduation ceremony and what do these awards mean to you? It came as a surprise to me because I assumed that there were candidates better than me. However, it came as a double blessing on top of being a valedictorian. I felt these awards were a testimony to the efforts and the degree of passion I have put into my studies. It was also a testimony to my contribution in providing a positive impact to these underprivileged groups in both the local and international communities as the president of my Community Service Club. How can you contribute to the RMG post-graduation? Having been equipped with the knowledge and skills I learnt from my school curriculum, and leadership roles in my co-curricular as well as attachments in healthcare institutions, I aim to be a competent nurse at the start of my career journey. I hope that with my nursing skills, research experience, and creativity I can valueadd to RMG from my primary role in providing the best care to patients using the Group’s core values of CCETV (compassion, commitment, excellence, team-based care, and value). At the same time, I strive to impact my workplace by creating research initiatives with the intention to innovate and streamline work processes for nurses on the ground and increase the quality of care for our patients. Nonetheless, these achievements were not by my efforts alone, but also the higher power and the circle of people who had supported me through my ups and downs during my student journey. They include my mentor, clinical instructor, preceptors, Raffles Hospital, family members, friends, lecturers, and the people from my church who had kept me in their prayers. 20 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Nurses’ Day 2023 Award Ceremony We are pleased to announce this year’s recipients for the various award segments that honour a group of outstanding nurses for their hard work and contributions made towards our patients and the community. Congratulations to our awardees this year.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 125 nurses were presented with the Nurses’ Merit Award (NMA) by Minister for Health, Mr Ong Ye Kung, on 19 July 2023. The NMA started in 1976 and is awarded to nurses who have displayed noteworthy and exceptional performance, participated in professional development, and contributed to raising the nursing profession. Nurses are nominated for the award by their healthcare institutions and selected by a panel set up by the Ministry of Health (MOH). We are very proud to announce that one of the proud recipients is Nurse Clinician Wong Siew Fong from Intensive Care Unit (ICU). MOH Nurses Merit Award (NMA) How long have you been a nurse for? In 2008, I applied for nursing school in Malaysia. I have always been interested in the ICU speciality since I started studying. I immediately joined the ICU once I graduated in 2011 and have not looked back ever since. I worked in Malaysia from 2011 to 2016 and eventually took a leap of faith to come to Singapore. I have since joined Raffles Hospital and worked as a nurse in the ICU for eight years. Why ICU? I find ICU a very intriguing place. Each patient is critically ill and requires a high level of attentiveness and nursing care. Anything can happen any time, and it requires me to be on my toes every shift. Often, I come to work without knowing what is in store for me, and it challenges me intellectually. It gives me great satisfaction when patients recover or is fit enough to leave the ICU with a smile on their face. What are the difficulties you face as a nurse? Personally, I found it the hardest when I first started out as a nurse. This especially so in the ICU department. Everything felt so foreign and new despite the knowledge I had from studying. Patients were all very vulnerable and extremely sick, and it makes me question myself if I have the capability to care for them. It was an extremely steep learning curve and it took a lot of perseverance to finally ease into the ICU setting. Is there any advice you would like to give to your fellow nurses? It is important to keep an open mind and continue to have a deep passion for learning and nursing. Return to when you first started and ask yourself “why nursing” and be empathetic towards your patients and their family. It is imperative to be hardworking, lead by example, and be the role model for your junior nurses. It is crucial to cultivate a healthy work environment, a team that is supportive and has a high level of teamwork. Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you in achieving this award? I would like to thank my whole ICU team and colleagues in supporting me to achieve this award. Thank you for all the times together ever since I arrived in Singapore in 2016 and for watching me grow as a nurse. I would also like to thank my supervisors for trusting me and giving me this opportunity. I would not be where I am today without all their guidance and patience.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 This year, we awarded selected outstanding nurses who have achieved the highest accolade of excellent performance in their work and patient care. The following awards were given to recognise nurses who have reflected the altruistic values of our founder of nursing – Florence Nightingale. 4 Winners of “Raffles Medical Group Nightingale Award” The Raffles Medical Group Nightingale Award recognises and celebrates Raffles nurses who have been inspirational role models of patient care. To be recognised for upholding the core values of Compassion, Commitment, Excellence, Team-based Care, and Value. I would like to express my thanks to all the people involved for the support they have given me. I am truly grateful. As a nurse, I believe that what I do matters and will make a difference in people’s lives. I enjoy little talks with my patients while they are receiving care during their stay. This helps them feel at ease, and assures them that they are our utmost priority. It gives me a great sense of fulfilment when I am helping my patients on their road to recovery. Being a nurse, I inspire my patients, but most of the time, they inspire me. Moving forward, I will continue to uphold the values of RMG and provide the highest standard of care to the patients.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Ramachandran Anitha Acting Assistant Nurse Clinician Inpatient Ward 9 “When the whole world becomes silent, even one voice becomes powerful,” said Malala Yousafzal who is a Pakistani female education activist. By voicing out your opinion and thoughts, you are manifesting a thought that you are ready to take on anything that comes your way. When I first started my career at Raffles Hospital, I felt timid and lack of confidence in every small task I performed. A million thoughts would race through my mind each time. I am thankful and grateful for my colleagues and supervisors who were there to support and guide me to overcome the obstacles that I was initially struggling with. To thank them for their act of kindness, I felt the urge to stand forward to assist them in ways I can help. I try to see from their perspective and find out what they are thinking. Similarly, I always put myself in my patients shoes and see from their family’s point of view to deepen my understanding of their needs so that I can cater to their needs more holistically. I would explain to them exactly what I need to do and how we can work together so that they can understand the situation better. I take time to communicate and to listen to them, in order to build trust. Through my nursing career, it has taught me the importance of voicing out one’s thoughts and therefore I dedicate this special victory to my loved ones. I am a good listener. I try my best to remember key information at my fingertips, which enables me to help my peers and patients quickly when they are in doubt. As someone who is less techsavvy, at times it could be hard to keep up with the trend. However, this does not deter me to constantly upgrade myself especially when it comes to patient and staff safety. I will continue to contribute to Raffles because this is where my passion starts. Nur Ayuni Yahaya Senior Staff Nurse l Raffles Executive Medical Centre I once came across a profound saying that has become the guiding light of my life: “Don’t lament if people recall you solely in times of need. Consider it an honour to be like a candle, emerging in their thoughts when darkness falls.” Allow me to introduce myself as Nur Ayuni Bte Yahaya. For the past 15 years, I have proudly served as a nurse at Raffles Executive Medical Centre (REMC), dedicating myself to clinical duties and patient care. Despite the upscale nature of my clinic, I am committed to treating every individual with the same unwavering compassion. Recognising the potential stress that accompanies clinic visits, I find immense joy in transforming these moments into pleasant and comforting experiences. From my earliest days, my parents instilled in me the timeless values of extending help to others whenever possible and embracing kindness as a way of life. These principles have shaped the course of my journey. This recognition I am receiving is not solely mine, it is a tribute to my parents who sculpted my essence. To my cherished family, particularly my husband, Nizam and son, Naim, whose unwavering support has been the cornerstone of my career. To those who have stood by my side, especially my REMC team, I am eternally grateful for their belief in me. With heartfelt gratitude, I extend my thanks to Raffles Hospital for this remarkable opportunity. Here’s to the countless chapters yet to be penned in the tapestry of the years ahead!

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Excellent Preceptor Award The “Excellent Preceptor Award” recognises distinguished Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses who have successfully nurtured and mentored pre-registration nursing students and new nurses. This is extremely critical in ensuring we are constantly on the lookout and grooming the next generation of talented nurses. Allera Eric Ababon Enrolled Nurse I Inpatient Ward 13 A preceptor is not an easy role. You are responsible for your own, as well as your preceptee’s actions and mistakes. However, I can say that it has truly been rewarding. Precepting enabled me to develop deep patience towards different characters and learning styles. One way of teaching a preceptee may not work for another. That in itself is a daily challenge that I am willing to face. They say that a good preceptor finishes the task despite the differences. However, I have learnt that an excellent preceptor ensures that their preceptee gains knowledge, experience, and ultimately develops competency and wisdom before finishing the task. Today, I share this recognition with my fellow preceptors who have worked incredibly hard to nurture the new generation of nurses. This is for all of us. Lastly, I share this recognition with all our preceptees whom I know have worked equally hard to be where they are today. You are doing good. Thank you for the lessons you have taught us along the way. Let’s continue working hard and playing harder! Medina Chodel Demesa Staff Nurse I Inpatient Ward 10 My role is to guide and support new beginners on their important journey in healthcare. When asked to precept, I felt doubtful about myself and I am afraid that I might not excel due to my limited knowledge and social interactions. For my first interactions with new staff and students, I ensure that we are committed to fostering a comfortable and collaborative environment. I actively listen to their concerns, ensuring that my teaching is engaging and enjoyable, encouraging them to approach their task with excitement rather than feeling pressured. Patience and understanding are the key traits as we learn from each other’s experiences. It is my pleasure to be a part of the journey for new staff and students, united in our goal to ensure our patients are satisfied with the quality of care we provide.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Best Enrolled Nurse Award The “Best Enrolled Nurse Award” recognises promising Enrolled Nurses who have shown commitment, excellence, and dedication in their profession at Raffles Hospital. Ng Bee Ling Principal Enrolled Nurse Inpatient Day Surgery Ward I am so thankful to be awarded the Best Enrolled Nurse Award. I would like to express my thanks to my team that has stood by me as we care for the many patients in the Day Surgery Ward. It has been a deeply meaningful and enriching journey in the ward, and one that fills me with joy and fulfilment. The Day Surgery Ward is a place with smiles and tears. Many of our patients come in fearful and anxious, unsure of what is to come. As a nurse, I offer comfort and reassurance that they will receive the best care. I listen to their worries, give comfort, and escort them to have their procedures done. Thankfully, they often leave with smiles on their faces and in better health. To me, this is the best part of my job. I hope to continue with this purpose of bringing comfort and joy to patients together with my team. Once again, thank you very much to my chief nurse, senior managers, sister, and colleagues for your support in my work as a enrolled nurse in Raffles Hospital.

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Bouquets for our nurses! Each nurse is a service ambassador in RMG, and they play an important role in shaping the Raffles Experience by delivering excellent service. 30 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Loh Sok Hian Raffles Orthopaedic Centre I had an appointment with Dr Ganesan for a nagging back pain that I have been having. After filling out the registration process, I took a seat while waiting. I noticed a counter staff who was very helpful towards patients and anyone who had queries. Particularly an elderly patient who was wheelchair bound and was being looked after by her caretaker. Seeing that the caretaker was holding on to multiple items and had her hands full, one of the staff immediately anticipated it and helped to wheel her into the doctor’s office as her name was called out. I enquired the staff’s name and it was Vivian. Being helpful seemed to be clockwork for all the staff working together with her. They knew how to complement each other as a team and deliver outstanding care with anticipation. The more I sat there in waiting, the more I was impressed with the high standards they held while working. Kudos to all staff! Ramachandran Anitha Inpatient – Ward 9 Staff Nurse Anitha was able to communicate with my mother as she only speaks Tamil. She was very humble and patient. During discharge, she explained everything in detail. I wish her many more successes in her future. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional care and compassion provided during my recent visit to the Neuroscience Centre. Due to my Bell’s Palsy conditions that impacted my right eye, Joyce attended to me and explained in great details how to take care of my eyes. She taught me good techniques to tape and patch my right eye too, otherwise the way I did it previously was ineffective, resulting in dry eye and difficulty in sleeping. Joyce’s proficiency, attentiveness, and warmth made my experience comfortable and reassuring. Thank you, Raffles for making a positive difference in the lives of your patients. Lim Tse Yen, Joyce Raffles Neuroscience Centre Gonzales Leonila Diamante Raffles Medical – Shaw Centre She was friendly and humorous, and the way she drew my blood showed that she was very experienced. She gave clear instructions and helped me feel assured as I am slightly fearful of blood tests. I would like to thank all the staff from Ward 10B who were there for me during my stay in the hospital. They were helpful, patient, and supportive of me. I really appreciate their help. Staff made effort to engage patient and remember his name. Made the visit welcoming and calm. She is able to advise on appointment dates to suit my schedule. Angelyne Tan Siew Hua Raffles Internal Medicine Centre Nurses were professional, caring, patient, and smiley. They were excellent in what they did and would answer my questions as best as they could. I experienced minimal discomfort throughout my stay. One of them urged me to get some sleep when I was still awake past 10pm. I felt like I was being looked after and comforted like a child by a temporary parent in the best way possible. Knowing that I was a light-sleeper and a perpetually hungry woman, she offered to bring me some snacks at slightly past 5am after taking my vital stats. This was even before I asked. That was so attentive! Another nurse from the ward called me days after my surgery to check how I was. That was surprisingly pleasant too! Agatep Anna May Brillantes Inpatient – Ward 8 (O&G)

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 My daughter was bored and a bit depressed staying in a hospital. They treated the little girl as if she was their niece or granddaughter. They would say “hi” every time and make friendly conversations to make her feel comfortable. It felt like they’re really caring, not just doing it because it’s their job. Thanks to their kindness, my daughter could smile and laugh many times while being warded. Also I would like to thank them for being considerate towards us, parents too. Modiyil Skariah Gracy Kutty, Torrefiel Maria Dolores Catherine Espina Wong See Lea Inpatient – Ward 8 (Paediatric) & (O&G) King was professional not just in competency but in his manner and going the extra mile in handling patients’ needs and concerns. His overall experience was excellent, the nursing and medical staff at all levels were competent, cheerful, positive, and encouraging. It creates a happy environment that makes patients feel less anxious and assured that they are in good caring hands. Although Nurse Eiffa is young in age, she is confident and certainly very skilled with her blood taking. The whole experience was lovely because she was bubbly and it was a joy to have her. Thank you, Nurse Eiffa. Allera Eric Ababon Sibal Cheryll Ocfemia Moe Moe Aye Inpatient – Ward 13 My girlfriend was attended to by these three nurses. I observed that they rendered excellent service to her and I was very touched by it. Nurse Eric was very helpful and attentive to my girlfriend’s needs. He was also very patient towards my girlfriend even though he had other matters to attend to. I also observed that they treated other patients with the same respect and attentiveness. Overall, I was very impressed by their service! Keep up the good work! I tried not to get Jade’s help but she seemed to be watching me at all times and come to my aide without me asking. She showered, gave me toothpaste and comb, and make sure I look clean and comfortable during my stay in the ward. I had fractured my right wrist and it very difficult to do simple things on my own. She assisted me in changing my clothes and put on diapers for me. I felt helpless and upset with my condition, but I was glad that I received such service readily and kindness from Jade. She had made my stay comfortable and with great satisfaction. Xia Ying Inpatient – Ward 13 Eiffa Nadiah Binti Azman Raffles Health Screeners Nurse Cathy and Gracy of Ward 8B displayed exceptional service. 32 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Thank you, Ms Abigail, for your kind explanation in the clinic and follow-up to make sure I got everything I needed. Super helpful! To be honest, both you and Dr Chua are the best medical professionals I have seen and the most kind-hearted ones. Thank you for all the attention and care given to my daughter. I’m really very grateful for everything you have done. Zhuo Yue Raffles Children’s Centre Aiza is patient and does her best to fix my appointments for me. Balatbat Aiza Almonte Raffles Women’s Centre Grace Kutty, someone whom I really felt safe entrusting my son with, is really important for parent. She showed us such empathy that really eased the tension in the situation. She ensured that we didn’t have to worry and that we were in good care. She took care of our son like her own. She and the other nurses at the ward did an amazing job as a team. I couldn’t have asked for more from the team. All of them did an amazing job of making sure our experience was pleasant by constantly checking on us and attending to our request. They all welcomed our son like their friend. Modiyil Skariah Gracy Kutty Inpatient – Ward 8 (Paediatric) I would like to compliment a nurse, Simon, for his excellent service! His patience and meticulous care for my mother-in-law is such an eye-opening for me. I have been to so many hospitals and all the nurses I have seen are nothing compared to Simon. His knowledge of the patient condition wows me as he can explain clearly what the operation is about (most of the nurses will just say wait for the doctor to explain) and when my mother-in-law is uncomfortable, he massages her leg and ensures she is comfortable and even went the extra mile to take additional pillow to rest her leg so she will feel comfortable. This is really the kind of extra mile I have never seen a nurse doing before! Hopefully more nurses are trained and inspired by him! Thong Jun Wen (Simon) Inpatient – ICU Eric always loves to help even with small issues without being asked. He would do it willingly. His service standard definitely stood out and he is an excellent nurse. Special thanks and appreciation to Eric for entertaining me and making my hospitalisation feel special. Excellent service. They performed with professionalism and sincerity. Such a professional labour ward team! Yu Chunyan Inpatient – Ward 8 (Labour Ward) Poon Yi Hang Gilian Inpatient – Ward 8C (Female Surgical)

Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 I would like to commend the professionalism and swift action of the A&E staff nurses and doctor who diagnosed and treated me. I would also want to thank all the staff nurses, not forgetting nurse Magdalene and some others, as well as the trainees who took care of my needs with tender loving care. They are definitely credited for their professionalism and support given to me during my stay. Bravo to all the staff and doctors. You are awesome! Once again, my heartfelt appreciation to the staff from Raffles Hospital. She made the appointments and visits seamless, while also making patients very comfortable during the entire process exactly what patients need. ICU nurse Pei Boon had displayed professional nursing skills and empathy throughout my two-day stay in ICU. She assisted me with a lot of patience when I was having constipation and not able to use the adult diaper. She assisted me with bed pan and commode chair even when I had difficulty coming out of bed. She would try ways to make me feel comfortable. She went the extra mile to find ways to help me, and this meant a lot to keep the dignity of the patient. Lee Pei Boon Inpatient – ICU Zeenat Begum Binte Razap Raffles Internal Medicine Centre From my family here in NZ, we thank you wholeheartedly and are grateful for the exceptional service received from you, your teams. From the time of admission to T3 Medical Centre and Raffles Hospital for ECG, CT scan, blood tests, and X-ray. Our experience was exceptional and I offer my thanks to you Dr Boon (your staff nurse Zeenat on level 9). You all should be praised for your time and service in helping others, and be proud that you work for a healthcare system that makes Singapore proud. Your organisation should be proud of having such astute doctors and staff working in a first-class organisation. Well done! 34 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Chan Yee Hui Raffles Women’s Centre The journey has been great starting from our visit to the Women’s Centre to see Dr Jazlan and Nurse Yee Hui, who assists Dr Jazlan for our appointments. The communication has been great and Nurse Yee Hui especially is very cheerful and engaging whenever she sees my wife at Women’s Centre. In summary, my wife and I are very satisfied with the level of professionalism from your nurses and doctors. We are grateful to have them assist us throughout my wife’s pregnancy journey. Thank you, Raffles! I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding care provided to me during my recent stay at Raffles Hospital. Specifically, I would like to commend two of your male staff nurses of Ward 13, Allera Eric Ababon and Phan Le Minh, for their exceptional dedication and professionalism. From the moment I arrived, Allera Eric Ababon and Phan Le Minh made me feel comfortable and well-cared for. They were always attentive to my needs and were quick to respond to concerns or questions I had. Their patience, kindness, and compassion were evident throughout my stay, and I am truly grateful for their unwavering support and care. Not only were they highly skilled and knowledgeable in their field, but they also went above and beyond their duties to ensure that I received the best possible care. They took time to explain my medical condition and treatment options in a way that I could understand. They also provided me with the necessary emotional support to get through a difficult time. Their professionalism, hard work, and dedication have left a lasting impression on me, and I am forever grateful for their excellent care. I have no doubt that they are valuable assets to Raffles Hospital, and I hope they are recognised for their outstanding service. Thank you once again to Allera Eric Ababon and Phan Le Minh, for their exceptional care and for making my stay as comfortable as possible. I am truly grateful and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. It is really tough to see my wife in such pain as the contractions were on and off and yet the nurses always come by to monitor and see if they could ease some discomfort by offering suggestions or have small talks to distract my wife from her pain. During the delivery phase, I saw Nurse Sara encouraging my wife and repositioning her to enable my wife push better. All these boosted my confidence that my wife was under great care. All in all, my wife and I are very satisfied with the level of professionalism from Raffles Hospital’s nurses and doctors. I am grateful to have them assist in my wife’s pregnancy journey. Kiranjit Kaur Jangir Singh, Nicole Chloe Thomas, Sara Binte Hussain, Tan Chue Lai, Thian Jan Kian & Norhaini Binte Rahmat Inpatient – Ward 8 (Labour Ward) After the delivery of our baby girl, we were reassigned to a single room to recover for the next 3 days. My wife still had trouble latching the baby for breastfeeding. This was when the best of the best nurse came in our room to teach. She gave very good tips and demonstrations to my wife and I. As new parents, we were really worried that our baby girl was not drinking enough breastmilk since she kept slipping off when suckling. When Nurse Helen came, she demonstrated one of the highest customer experience levels that still gives my wife and I a smile whenever we think of it. She has a very outgoing personality that can even get along with both of our parents. She has magic hands that makes our baby girl drink breastmilk easily. 35 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 Noor Fazira Binte Safarjan Raffles Surgery Centre All the nurses, especially Nurse Fazira, are very caring and patient. I felt very assured of the procedure that I would be going through. They are professional, competent, and caring. Thank you so much. You gals are truly nurse angels! Raffles ENT Centre has been truly remarkable with providing the quality service to patients and clients alike. They greeted and acknowledged my presence. They are welcoming and attentive as well. Thank you, Juresse and Cath. Jureese Medina Adrineda Ng Cath Chin Raffles ENT Centre Stephen Biji Anu Inpatient – Ward 10 I was warded for a bout of rather severe gastroenteritis. Throughout my stay, I was very well taken care of. From the time I was received at the A&E department till my discharge. Kudos to the very friendly nurse who set my drip, settled my admission paperwork, and whisked me off to the ward. Much thanks to nurse Biji Anu, for her unhurried ‘motherly’ assurance, despite expediting the process. Keep up the great standard. I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the people whom I’ve had the privilege to interact with and be cared by, for their outstanding service and teamwork that truly made a difference in my stay. Tricia is the exemplary star of my service experience. She was the nurse in charge for both nights of my stay. She did my blood cultures with exceptional care and competence. She was professional and compassionate, and has just the right effervescence to lighten a patient’s otherwise miserable day. Once again, I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the staff who have taken care of me. Your outstanding service has truly made a difference in my stay. Tricia Teo Yuwen Inpatient – Ward 10 Guo Tingting Inpatient – Ward 9 (Medical / Surgery) Tingting, who’s an enrolled nurse from another ward was covering just for the first night, was worthy of praise. Although my interactions with her was mostly for monitoring of vital stats, she was attentive and professional, and had such a friendly demeanour. When I requested for a fresh set of pyjamas in the middle of the night because I had soiled myself, she quickly communicated to her colleague, Tricia, (without me asking) who promptly came with loperamide to help resolve my condition. Thank you for the outstanding service and teamwork. I want to thank Nurse Mar Cho who was on night duty during my stay. I had ordered my meals prior to my surgery. After my surgery, I was served dinner at about 8pm. I was expecting a peanut butter sandwich at 9pm for supper as I was rather hungry. I waited, but nothing came. At 9.20pm, I asked the nurse on duty. She explained that “supper time was over” and offered to check with the kitchen. However, it was apparently closed and she could only offer me some fruits or milo – both of which I declined as I wanted a sandwich. I decided that I needed to order food delivery. But shortly after, Nurse Mar Cho, who was on the next shift, came in and I explained my predicament. She quickly went outside and returned quickly to offer me bread with jam and butter. I really appreciate her resourcefulness and helpfulness. It saved me from getting gastritis. Please give my thanks and appreciation to these excellent nurses. Khin Mar Cho Inpatient – Ward 10 (Medical / Surgery)

She was always warm and friendly, and always explained to us patiently what she was doing. Saarah felt safe and assured that she was in safe hands. Thank you for the gift that you made for Saarah. It was unexpected but a heartwarming gesture. Mas has a beautiful and warm motherly personality that made the experience much more comfortable for us all. The staff at Women’s Centre were courteous and the whole visit was seamless and swift! Kudos to all Women’s Centre staff! She seemed to be able to recognise the patients that came for the day. She was alert to my needs. I needed to see Dr Ng Wai Lin urgently as I had a lunch appointment. This was while she was handling another patient, but she politely put us on hold consecutively as she dealt with the matter at hand. Eventually, Dr Ng was available and I managed a quick consultation with him. As I was rushing for my lunch appointment, she intuitively read my intentions to come back at a later time or date for my medicines. Her demeanour gave me the assurance that my matters were being well taken care of, and I could assume that ‘all is well and fine’. I did in fact came back just after 5pm. Whoever received my call also assured me that the Heart Centre would wait for me although the closing time is at 5pm. I arrived at 5.08pm and my medications were already prepared. From medication collection to payment, the process was a breeze. At the end of it all, I could not have felt more well-served. Thank you all, Heart Centre! I look forward to visit again. 37 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 The attentive nurses at Ward 8D were prompt with their service and care. It has definitely enhanced my recovery and eased my post op discomfort. While carrying out their tasks, the nurses would explain my gynae’s instructions, assuring me of the care and recovery each day as I got better. When Dr Han requested to serve me banana to boost my low potassium level post op, the nurses got out of their way to find me a banana even though it’s not available at the kitchen and I deeply appreciate that. I am thankful for the daily walks the nurses have faithfully reminded me before and after meals to aid my recovery. I valued their explanation and reminders on the types of medication and giving me the options at times to decide whether I would like additional aids such as injection or pills to ease my pain and to help with my sleep. They remained calm, collected, and treated the individual with the utmost respect, displaying a level of professionalism that is truly commendable. Furthermore, I had the privilege of having Diana administer a blood test for me. She was incredibly proficient in her work, but her expertise and attentive-ness made me feel at ease throughout the procedure. 38 Nursing Times Vol 4, No 3 ON THE RADAR On the Radar Let us welcome our nursing leader and new nurses for this issue! Masziahton Binte Mohamed Masod Senior Nurse Clinician After feeling helpless for not being able to care for my terminally ill father, I decided to enrol in a nursing course. Having worked in banking and in a computer school, the switch to nursing was a daunting decision at the same time a choice filled with excitement and a desire for continuous learning. Transitioning into the nursing field brought tremendous personal and professional growth. The satisfaction of making a positive impact on people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments fuelled my passion for patient care and motivated me to advance within this noble profession. As I expanded my knowledge and skills, I progressed to the role of a nurse clinician, taking on more responsibilities and actively participating in treatment planning alongside multi-disciplinary teams to optimise patient outcomes. It was during this period that I discovered my passion for wound management, a specialised field dedicated to the prevention and treatment of various types of wounds. Becoming a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (WOCN), a specialist in wound and continence management, requires dedication, continuous education, and hands-on experience. Staying updated with the latest research became crucial. This specialty allows me to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals with complex wounds, emphasising the importance of a holistic approach to wound care. Being part of the Raffles Hospital nursing team not only provides me with opportunities to enhance my experience in wound care, but it also fosters collaboration with various medical disciplines, and facilitates access to resources leading to improvements in patient outcomes and overall healthcare delivery. It has been exceptionally rewarding to empower patients, enabling them to actively participate in their healing process and enhance their quality of life. I eagerly anticipate continuing my career at Raffles Hospital, constantly expanding my skills, knowledge, and making a meaningful impact on those in need.
