Victory, Churchill Center & School’s Annual Report, is named in
honor of Winston Churchill’s first speech as Prime Minister. In his
1940 speech to the House of Commons, he made this declaration:
“Victory. Victory at all costs…victory however long and hard the
road may be, for without victory there is no survival.”
At Churchill, because of the strong belief that children with
learning disabilities can be academically successful, the
ultimate goal is to have these students return to a traditional
classroom in as short a time as possible, thus helping them to be
individually victorious.

GIVE STL DAY
ONE DAY • ONE COMMUNITY • #GIVESTLDAY
Once again, Churchill Center & School, along with 825 other local nonprofits, participated
in the 4th annual Give STL Day held on May 11, 2017. Give STL Day is an online day
of giving where nonprofits like Churchill reach out to supporters to share their mission and
raise funds.
This year, two generous friends of Churchill joined together to pledge $10,000 to create an
exciting matching challenge. All gifts were matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000. Thanks to
this match, we raised more than $22,000 in just 24 hours, and finished 26th in dollars raised
of all the participating organizations. These gifts will make a huge difference in the lives
of our current and future students. We love our Churchill community! #WeAreChurchill
GOLF TOURNAMENT
IN MEMORY OF EDWIN L. NOEL
The 4th biennial Churchill Center & School Golf
Tournament was held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at
Norwood Hills Country Club. The event was a huge
success, raising more than $60,000 for our
Scholarship Fund!
This biennial tournament began in 2011 to honor
the life of Edwin (Ted) L. Noel, a former parent
and Board President of Churchill Center & School.
Ted and his family and friends were very passionate
about helping families in financial need be able to
attend Churchill. Since the tournament’s inception,
it has raised more that $217,000 for scholarship
assistance to ensure no family is turned away from
Churchill for their inability to pay. #grateful

AWARDS & GRADUATION ASSEMBLY
ALUMNUS SPEAKER & ANNUAL AWARD WINNERS
On May 26, 2017, Churchill Center & School celebrated the achievements of our students and teachers with an awards assembly and
graduation ceremony. A few highlights from the day included an inspiring and motivating speech from Churchill Alumnus Andrew
Witherspoon, presentation of personal best awards to each lower and upper school student, reading incentive recognition, first and
second honor distinctions, homework and citizenship honors, aerobic point competition winners, national and presidential physical
fitness champions and the presentation of three notable student and teacher awards.
This year’s distinguished speaker was Alumnus Andrew Witherspoon. Andrew attended Churchill Center & School from 2004-
2008, and is currently a senior at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania studying finance. During his address, Andrew spoke to
our students, faculty, staff and families about the importance of a Churchill education. He explained that the strategies and skills received at
Churchill continue to help him advocate for himself, academically compete (and excel) with his classmates, develop important study and life
habits, face adversity and challenges head-on, and never let anyone tell him what he can or cannot do! He went on to say that, “Although things
are harder for students like us, we can be just as successful, if not more successful, than kids without learning disabilities.”
Churchill Center & School’s Robert Hermann Holton Leadership Award was created by Rob
Holton’s family in 1996. This award is presented to a student who best exemplifies the qualities of
leadership, scholastic and athletic achievement and active community involvement. Will Maune was this
year’s 22nd annual award recipient. His Tutorial Teacher, Jon Rubin, says about Will, “A strong student. An
athlete. A leader in his community. One should be happy to have just one of these qualities, but Will has
them all and many more. He has come into his own, developed a great sense of his strengths, and
understands the hard work that is in front of him. We look forward to seeing his continued success.”
Finalists for the 2017 Robert Herman Holton Award included Emma Haas and Estevan Lee.
The Herb Case Award was established in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Calvin A. Case, Jr.,
to honor their son, Herb, who attended Churchill. The Herb Case Award is given to the student who
combines outstanding performance and growth in all areas of life at Churchill, as well as character,
quiet leadership, and concern for and service to others. The 29th winner of this award is Katherine
Witte. Katherine is described by her teachers as being responsible, honest and kind. She is known
for her perseverance because she never gives up, and is always quick to volunteer at school and in
the community. Finalists for the 2017 Herb Case Award were Will Griesemer and Nathan Mollet.
In the spring of 2003, Churchill’s Board of Trustees created the John D. Valentine Award for Teaching Excellence as a
special tribute to the memory of John D. Valentine, a past parent, Board member and dedicated member of the Churchill family. Recipients of this
award are selected by their colleagues because they possess Competence, Caring and Courage.
The 2017 winner of the John D. Valentine Award for Teaching Excellence was Rachel Wheatley. Rachel has been with Churchill Center & School
for eleven years as a language arts and tutorial teacher. Rachel’s supervisor, Justin Schwartzman, shares, “Rachel’s dedication to Churchill’s
student-centered values is evident to her colleagues, to Churchill families, and perhaps most of all, to her students who flourish under her confi-
dent guidance, genuine care and individualized instruction. Rachel provides a safe, motivating environment for risk-taking, reflection and growth.
Her students know they are understood and appreciated for who they are. Rachel’s dedication goes beyond her classroom, selflessly seizing
opportunities to make a difference for the benefit of our students and the whole Churchill community and beyond. She is a passionate
collaborator, working together with colleagues and parents to help each child gain confidence and master the skills needed for success. With her
enduring commitment, kindness and knowledge, Rachel shines brightly here at Churchill Center & School.”
