DAVID WIENER VENTURES
Creating Performance and Style Since 1982
Innovation. Performance. Style.
David Wiener Ventures is the creative and business outlet of David Wiener. From the early days in 1982 to today,
DWV has been a source of high visibility, exciting and unique creations.
David is an internationally recognized designer and serial entrepreneur who combines extraordinary style
and performance in everything he creates. David applies his engineering, marketing and branding expertise to
ensure success for his design creations, from cars and bikes to yachts and aircraft, high fashion, furniture and
furnishings, electronics, sports equipment, audio systems, music products, electronics, digital apps, and more
recently, cyber-encryption systems.
Over the past 35+ years, DWV has created iconic products, logos and brands for such global names as Ferrari,
the U.S. Ski Team, Columbia Sportswear, Ben & Jerry’s, Nike, BMW, Ganassi Racing, and many others. DWV has
been the subject of countless international media stories, as well as a PBS documentary, Human Power, about
David’s attempt on the human powered world speed record with vehicles he engineered and built as part of his
college thesis.
David Wiener grew up tinkering, inventing and building all manner of “things” from a gas powered go-kart at 12
to a hydroplane at 14 to a world speed record vehicle at 20. At UVM Engineering School and Hampshire College,
David majored in art and engineering, with a minor in aerodynamics. Out of college, David was recruited by Time
Magazine’s Engineer of the Century, Paul MacCready, before launching his own company, W2 Design in 1982,
later to be known as David Wiener Ventures, in Westport, Connecticut.
As a designer, inventor and entrepreneur, David has created an endless series of exciting products, businesses,
licensing opportunities and associations with global brands and elite sports teams. Along the way, David’s
driving goals have been simple:
Vision. Innovation. Performance. Style. Authenticity.

Artist. Designer. Entrepreneur. And Back.
In his teens, David Wiener was one of the youngest professional photographers in America, shooting the
exciting worlds of Formula One, the Indianapolis 500, the America’s Cup and the US Open. Later, becoming an
internationally recognized designer with clients such as Ferrari, Porsche, Beyman, Nike and Columbia, creating
innovative and iconic products, David’s work helped him develop an intriguing vision of the world, resulting
in one of his latest mediums: fine art prints that use photographs to push the viewer to see art in the often-
overlooked details of architecture, technology, nature and other subject matter. David has exhibited his work
internationally and has created commissioned pieces for private collectors and corporate clients.
From photographer to designer and engineer to entrepreneur and back to art, the overriding fuel is creativity
and passion - for all things that are unique, that move, roll, fly, enhance and inspire. David’s ideas and breadth
of vision even reaches into writing. With so many years of creating marketing pieces, manuals, presentations
and an endless stream of business documents, David has turned his writing to a book on the realities of serial
entrepreneurship, taking his own story and weaving an intense, fun, humorous – and at times, scary – tale that
will make seasoned entrepreneurs and business people smile and give budding newbies pause.
David Wiener’s products, clothing, furniture, vehicles and art are in the private collections of Jean Todt, Michael
Schumacher, Kimi Räikkönen, Sanjay Dutt, Alan Parsons, Pat Metheny, Ferrari SpA and the Mandarin Oriental.
David Wiener products are standard fixtures in global chains such as Starbucks, The GAP, Old Navy, Disney and
numerous others.
David works from studios in Park City, Utah and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. When not working, David is active
in all the things that inspire his work: skiing, saltwater fly-fishing, playing guitar, bird hunting, racing cars and
mountain biking. Some of his best ideas are inspired by time spent laughing, cooking and drinking Jack Daniel’s
with clients, friends and family.

My earliest passion was race cars. Vehicles took over much of my mind as a kid, and later as an adult. The beauty and elegance of Italian GT cars, the
rawness of Le Mans racers and the glamour and ultimate technology of Formula One infected my mind and from there, I was destined to look, learn and
listen, to absorb all I could from the worlds of speed, luxury, competition and engineering. Over time, my focus on the aesthetic pushed me to want to
control not just the desgn of the product at hand, but also the branding and marketing that would tell a story in a way that was perfectly sync’d. I call this
Integrated Design – where the product, packaging, visuals, collateral and even the name seem to talk to each other, to be intrinsicly connected. What could
be a better career than to create and create and create some more? A simple notebook and pencil are all I need to be perfectly happy, anywhere – on a
plane, a beach, in traffic, or killing time in a doctor’s office. What could be a better career?

The Die Is Cast
I was a car and speed freak from the age of 5. The idea of my own wheels and total control was intoxicating. By 6th grade, I pushed
my dad for a go kart. He said no. He said I could build one. So I did. My mom drove me to the local welding shop and the grizzled
veteran welders humored me and allowed me inside the work area to set up my simple wooden jigs to achieve the right caster and
camber for my front spindles. I was in heaven. The shop teacher in junior high later told me you “couldn’t” make a go kart out of
wood. Little did he know... A year later, I saw an article in Popular Mechanics and determined I could build my own hydroplane. I
talked my mom into driving me to the lumber yard where I put the magazine’s shopping list to work. Weeks later, I was motoring
out into Long island Sound - not the best testing grounds for an 8-foot boat with a couple inches of clearance off the bow! The die
had been cast and vehicles would - and still do - play a big part in my life and career. - DW

Action
I was passionate about sports and action photography. I started in elementary school and started selling work while in junior high.
By high school, I had an agent. It was exciting stuff and made for lots of good stories and events! One of the key lessons I learned
early on came from working with George Silk, LIFE magazine photographer and the great master of action and sports photography.
He taught me that to truly capture the excitement of action, you had to get really close. Later, when I was shooting the US Open
for Newsweek Magazine, I used my youth to my advantage. I was 17 and all the other pros were 30, 40, 50 years old. I pushed
the limits and inched my way ever closer to the court, and well past the line they used to limit where the photographers could sit.
I got inbetween the chairs the players used during breaks. The umpire gave me the eyeball but then gave me the OK sign. I spent
the match closer than any other photographer at the event. As an added bonus, my high school friends all saw me on TV - what
a boost when you’re a kid. Along the way, my interest in vehicles, engineering and design took over. Photography became a great
way for me to document my work and create marketing images. Going full circle over 40 years, I now use photography to create
artwork, which can be seen later in this book. - DW

Advancing Music Listening
In 2010, DWV Entertainment took over Aphex, an industry leader in audio signal processing and equipment for recording studios
and concert venues. Having used Aphex technology in the Ferrari Art.Engine audio system to enhance the audio performance of
this luxury music system, I wanted to expand the benefis of Aphex technology into a broader consumer application. The Audio
Xciter app was born and an 18-month development resulted in an app for Apple and Android devices that brought true studio-
quality signal processing to the music on people phones and tablets. Evangelizing about the sad state of digital music files and their
severely limited sound quality, the team at DWV Entertainment did thousands of side-by-side tests, allowing people to have that
WOW moment when they realize how much of their beloved music they were missing. Demos with music legends such as Alan
Parsons, Pat Metheny, Steven Tyler and others confirmed the extraordinary benefits of the Xciter app. Sadly, the world has moved
on, with Apple Music, Spotify and others overpowering consumers’ desire for quality. We live in a culture of “good enough” where
convenience outweighs quality - even when it comes to the universal language of music. - DW

I’ve spent most of my life observing the aesthetic: people, nature, products, fashion, architecture…everything. It is the daily function of a designer and artist.
It is both a subconscious and conscious research tool, as well as a critical method of “measurement” for style, performance, quality and desire. It is this
life-long demand for the elegant aesthetic that has trained me to look – and to see – detail and pattern in objects that might otherwise go unnoticed or
hidden by the combination (or concert) of their surroundings.
I call my art process Photographic Constructs, and I create this art because I want to provoke thought, change perspectives, and challenge the viewer to not
only see the beauty of shape, patterns, and colors playing off each other, but also to identify the detail and the hidden beauty within.
