Project Title Makerspace in the Library
1. Summarize this project. Identify the educational objectives/needs that would be addressed and explain how
those objectives would be met. (Maximum 100 words)
A makerspace provides students opportunities to have the freedom to explore and create items of their
own choosing. This space will give students a chance to tinker with items and learn how things work
through creating their own knowledge. This could be through individual projects or by working with a
partner or small group as they collaborate and learn from each in the creating process. This collaboration
is important as students enter the workforce and find themselves working with fellow employees on
various projects. The students learn not only how to manipulate items, but also learn how to share ideas
with others.
1a. Proposed Implementation Date. 4th quarter: March 24, 2015
1b. Estimated Timeframe of Project. ongoing
2. Explain how the educational objectives/needs identified in the above question relate to Missouri Standards.
There are many ways a makerspace reaches the goals of the Missouri Standards. It can be an important addition to any
STEM curriculum, For science, a makerspace will help students formulate and test hypotheses and learn how science,
technology, and human activity can change resources and the environment (Science Knowledge standards 7 and 8). In
math, a makerspace gives students an opportunity to understand geometric and spatial measurements, data analysis,
probability, and statistics as they manipulate items, and forming connections through patterns and relationships (Math
Knowledge stands 2, 3, and 4). A makerspace will also foster participation in formal and informal presentations and
discussions as students share ideas and collaborate with each other (English Knowledge standard 6).
3. What will this Teacher Innovation Grant allow you to accomplish for students/school/district that is above and
beyond what is currently being provided?
The makerspace will give students that freedom to create their own learning. They will be able to choose what
they want to do and what they want to accomplish through experimenting with the supplies and computer
programs. For instance, most students don’t have opportunities to see the inside of a computer modem and
discover how it is put together. Part of this space will include having pieces of computers available for
exploration. Tinkering with items in this way will help them make connections and give them the confidence to try
to create their own items. The same is true for manipulating a computer program and learning how different
commands cause things to happen. This learning and knowledge will build upon itself.

4. How will you document and evaluate the success of this grant?
The success of the program will be evident by the use of the makerspace and the excitement
generated by the students as they share their successes with their peers. This space is going to
be open to all students and participation will be encouraged by staff and students.
5. How many students will be affected? 50-100 (possible number of students that would consistently use the space)
Directly 600 (the entire student population could have access to the area)
Indirectly
6. How may the results of this project be shared with others, including Education Foundation board members?
The results of the makerspace will be shared through spotlights on the school website and through
bulletins on the school news broadcast. This could be through images and video, along with interviews
with participants and staff members. The makerspace will also be highlighted through posts in Dewsly.
Visits to the makerspace will be encouraged. For more information about makerspaces and their impact,
