Five Levels of Ecology
and
The Levels of Organization
By Elena Hakim 1A
Biosphere ❖ Areas of the earth occupied by
living organisms.
❖ Econmpasses entire earth and
all ecosystems within it.
❖ Mostly self regulating and a
closed system.
Biosphere
Ecosystem ❖ A community made up of living
organisms and nonliving
components (like water and
air)
❖ How those components react
with each other and their
physical surroundings
Ecosystem
Community ❖ Various species interacting in a
common location
❖ Populations of at least two or
more species in the area
Community
Population ❖ Population ecology is the
study of how certain species
interact with the environment
❖ How population growth and fall
affect the environment.
Population
Organism ❖ Anything that exhibits all
properties of life.
❖ A living system
❖ Made of organ systems
Organism
Organ System ❖ A group of organs that work
together to perform one or
more functions
❖ The respiratory system in an
example of an organ system in
the human body
❖ There are eleven major organ
systems in the human body
Organ System
Organs ❖ A group of tissues in an
organism that have been
adapted to perform a specific
function.
❖ Organs are grouped into organ
systems
Organs
Tissue ❖ Distinct material that animals
and plants are made from,
formed with cells
❖ Epithelial, connective,
muscular, and nervous tissue
are the four tissues that make
up the human body.
❖ A step between calls and a
complete organ
Tissue
Cell ❖ Smallest unit of life
❖ Often called the, “building
blocks of life.”
❖ The two main types of cells
are prokaryotic cells and
eukaryotic cells. (prokaryotic=
simple and no nucleus/
eukaryotic= complex and
nucleus)
❖ Make up tissue
Cell
Molecule ❖ A group of atoms bonded together
❖ The atoms represent the smallest
fundamental unit of a chemical
compound that can take part in a
chemical reaction.
❖ An electrically neutral group of two
or more atoms
❖ A compound is a molecule that
forms when the bonding atoms are
different (a well-known example
being water/H2O)
