UNVEILING THE UNSEEN

BISMILLAHIRRAHMANIRRAHIM

A collaborative exhibition entitled ‘MALAYSIA-IRAN ISLAMIC ART EXHIBITION
2022’ examines the Islamic artworks that manifested dervish calligraphic art,
Quranic verses design, visual representations imagery through paintings,
photographs, dimensional sculptures, geometric shapes design, ornaments of
flora and fauna, the patterns of the universe.

Manifestation of the Creator (Al-Khaliq) has brought visual artists projecting
knowledge of the universe and spiritual experience in Islamic Art. Visual presenters,
communicate ideas through exemplars (tamsil) in associating knowledge of
perception. The knowledge (‘ilm) in Islamic art interprets the sense of intuition with
worldly being, spiritual dimension, physical belonging, cleansing the terminal of a
path, and transcending unity. Hence, the knowledge of art connotates the aspect
of the semiotic philosophy in the art which projected aesthetic imagery, intrinsic
design, transcending symbols, formulated decorative ornaments, conceptual
icons, innovative typefaces, and intuitive expressive content.

Therefore, the works of art reveal the tangible meaning behind visuals in reflecting
the Existence and Essence of Allah the Almighty. The Almighty created and
designed the universe to unveil the essence of His Creation. The essence of the
creation is interpreted further through visual connotation, to sense the existing
elements of transcendence which deepen our soul to reveal the beauty ‘Jamal’
of the unseen. Visual representations have connotated a variety of styles and
artistic approaches which employ symbols, signs, icons, metaphors, anaphor, and
formalistic aspects conveying the existence of The Almighty which formulated the
existence of esoteric symbols of The Creator (Al- Khaliq).

To unveil the perception and intuition of the unseen, visuals are produced with
certain terminals of presentation towards expressing the sense of Unity. Therefore,
the element of light produces the existence of lines, shape, colour, value, form,
texture and space. Concerning the completeness existence of shadows, the
elements formulated; balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern and rhythm
to comprehend the language of beauty in art.

Hence, beauty in itself expressed various approaches and elevated knowledge
in possessing a deeper understanding of Art. Comprehending the aspects
of interpreting Art as a language, the elements and principles of design is the
connector towards the relationship of unity. Herewith, the works of art engage
unity of art mediums, styles and approaches engraved naturalistic representations
of the visible world, abstraction of spiritual expression, mimetic decorative
ornaments of the illuminated script and conveying conceptual messages from the
heart (qalb).

There has been much
resentment expressed recently
towards what is perceived
as the Arabisation of Malays.
This Arabisation is said to
be manifested in a number
of ways, the most common
being the adoption by Malays
of Arabic words in their
vocabulary and the donning of
Arabic dress such as the thobe,
an ankle-length garment
similar to a robe.
More and more male Muslims
in the region are using the Arab
thobe rather than the sarong
or kain pelikat. Many have
lamented the fact that things
Malay have been substituted
by things Arab and fear that
this is the beginning of a trend
of the Arabisation of the Malay
identity and culture.

Sign of the Miracle of the Qur’an: One of
the oldest and most famous theories in the
interpretation of syllables is that God began 29
chapters of the Holy Qur’an with these letters
so that Arabic reciters would understand that
the Qur’an is made of the same letters they
communicate and if one has thoughts that
Qur’an isn’t a miracle, with the same letters, bring
charms like the Holy Quran. The beautiful sound
of reciting these letters has always had a special
mystical charm for me and the opportunity to
write this miracle was a blessing from Allah SWT
to me. I believe having these holy letters in any
house brings blessing and prosperity to the
ambiance and surroundings.

Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful surahs of
the Qur’an is Surah Ar-Rahman. It is a surah that
reminds us of the infinite breadth of God’s mercy
and grace to all beings, especially humans. I
believe reciting this Surah provides Stronger
bonding with Allah the principle of creation and
