that the government employ-

the position of the employer
is over the salaries and allow-

He said government officials
were shifting from pillar to
post when confronted by the
workers on the fate of their de-
mands.
“We met with the employer
some few weeks back where
we held discussions on the is-
sue of the welfare of our mem-
bers. Our demands to govern-
ment were that there was need
for an urgent review of the
allowances that civil servants
were getting and that there was
also need for government to
review the Zimbabwean dollar
component of the salaries that
our members were getting on
a monthly basis,” Dzatsunga
said.
He added that the demand
was premised on the realiza-
tion that the US$100 that gov-
ernment was paying to the civil
servants was becoming too lit-
tle as the cost of basic services
and goods was increasing on a
regular basis.
“We made representations
that the US$100 was now be-
coming inadequate to meet the
daily and life demands of our
members. We explained that
the cost of living was going up
out there and the US$100 was
now becoming inadequate to
cushion civil servants from the
harsh economic situation.
“Following the presenta-
tions, government then of-
fered to increase our allow-
ances by US$25 so that civil
servants would get US$125 as
their monthly allowance on
top of the Zimbabwean dol-
lar salaries. Government had
indicated that it would main-

development that would see
members getting US$200 per

babwean dollars,” he added.
Dzatsunga, however, said the
Apex Council had not accepted
government’s offer.
“From our permutations,
we were hoping that mem-
bers would get approximately
US$250 for the month of Octo-
ber plus the Zimbabwean dol-
lar component. But from the
look of things, there is a like-
lihood that that would not be
the case.
