Chapter 2
2.6 How sovereign power is applied.
In a democratic society, people participate in government
by using their sovereign power in two ways:
2.6.1 Direct use
People are able to use legislative, administrative, and judicial
powers by having a formal convention. Normally, this happens
in communities that have small population like in Athens 2,700
years ago. Nowadays, most democratic countries are so big in
size and population that people are not able to use the sovereign
power directly except in the case of referendums.
2.6.2 Indirect use through representatives
Sovereign power can be used through a society’s formal
representatives. This practice is seen in most countries nowadays
such as Britain, Japan, America and Thailand. Because
government issues can be complicated and time-consuming,
the representatives are elected to be the ones who substitute
for the majority of people in political legislative processes.

3.2 Why do we study economics?
Besides the four basic needs, people pay a lot of attention
to what they want. Various products are made and sold to serve
people’s wants. Every day a number of resources such as time,
money, labour, energy are used to produce goods for people’s
consumption.
The point is that resources are scare and limited while
people’s needs and wants are not. Thus, people need to know how
to best use resources for themselves and the next generations.
Thus, economics is the study of how people, business and
government get the most from the world’s scarce resources.
Economics shows us how to make the best choices to maximize
what we have now. In brief, economics studies how people work
with scarcity.

3.5 Financial institutions
Financial institutions are organizations working with money.
They mostly do two things: lending money and raising money.
In an economic system production turns resources into products
and services. To do so, money is needed. The financial institutions
support the production by lending money. Once companies
borrow money from financial institutions, they have to pay interest.
For individual people, financial institutions raise money from
people by encouraging them to save at attractive interest rates.
This money will then be lent out to people that want to borrow.
The two main financial institutions in Thailand are the Bank of
Thailand and the commercial banks.
The bank of Thailand : It is
the most important financial
institution in Thailand.
It monitors the country’s
financial system. The Bank of
Thailand only raises or lends money to commercial banks and
the government. They also issue bank notes and coins.
