USES OF SEVERAL TRANSITION
ELEMENTS IN VARIOUS TNDUSTRIES
MADE BY : LOO JUN YAN
OBJECTIVES
Determine the position of transition
elements in the Periodic Table of
Elements
Explain the special characteristics of
a few transition elements with
examples
List uses of transition elements in
industry
CHARACTERISTICS OF TRANSITION
ELEMENTS
They have same
characteristics!!!
They are good conductors of
heat and electricity
They can be hammered or bent
easily
They have high melting point
They are usually hard and tough
They have high densities
IRON
Iron is the second most abundant metal
in the Earth's crust and more iron is
made than all the other metals put
together.
Iron is used in the Haber process to
produce ammonia for making fertilizer
that used in the agriculture.
The Haber process is an artificial
nitrogen fixation process.
Iron catalyst is used in the Haber
process. It increases the rate of the
reaction between hydrogen and
nitrogen without being used up in the
reaction to make ammonia.
CHROMIUM Chromium is a silver-white metal with a
high melting point. Besides, it is hard and
resistance to corrosion.
Chromium usually used in the
metallurgical industry and often mixed
into steel to make a hard and corrosion-
resistant alloy, mainly used for refining
stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, and
various electric heating element
materials.
When stainless steel encounters
corrosive substances, a fine and solid
chromium oxide film will be formed on
the surface to protect the internal metal
from corrosion.
Chrome steel is a good material for
manufacturing machinery, tanks, and
armored vehicles.
TITANIUM Titanium is a silver metal that is strong,
resistant to corrosion, and inert. It is the
ninth most abundant element in Earth's
crust.
Titanium usually used in production on an
high-speed aircraft especially on its wings
and in the engine.
Normally Titanium is used in engine
applications such as rotors, compressor
blades, hydraulic system components and
nacelles. Titanium 6AL-4V alloy accounts
for almost 50% of all alloys used in
aircraft applications.
Due to their high tensile strength to
density ratio, high corrosion resistance,
and ability to withstand moderately high
temperatures without creeping, titanium
alloys are used in aircraft, armor plating,
naval ships, spacecraft, and missiles.
REFLECTION
Firstly , I don't have any idea about this
project due to I have only have little
background knowledge about the related
topic. Besides , lacking of information in our
textbook. So , the only way is searching the
Internet and dicussing with friends. After it , I
have a better understanding about the uses
of transition elements in various industries.
After doing this project , I learned a lot about
the uses of transition elements that helps
human a lot.
APPRECIATION
I would like to say thank you to my
Chemistry teacher , Miss Yuu. Thank
you for explain and teach us how to
complete this project. Besides , I also
want to say thank you to my lovely
frineds that can discuss this project
with me. They really help me a lot
and spend a lot of time to complete
this project.
