Retail Banking Operations Bulletin

Fictitious/Altered checks
It is necessary for management to physically examine all checks $1,500 and over before the close of
business daily to catch any items that raise suspicion.
Below are a few items that you should consider while performing your review:
1. The account shows negative balances in any of the transaction accounts.
2. The account history shows inactivity prior to the deposit-No history of direct deposits or
payroll deductions
3. History shows frequent ATM inquiry fees.
4. Cashier’s check or business checks
5. Accountholder is between the age of 18 and 25 depositing suspicious large business checks
The Tellers must also be diligent in reviewing the account activity before depositing checks over $1,500
Things to look for:
Different fonts
Amount is less than $5,000 and usually for an odd amount
The address of the issuing bank is out of state

Check #1 has the following indicators:

o The Name below PAY TO THE ORDER OF is different from the Payee’s
Name

o The seal on the upper left side of the check is blurry
o There is a space between the asterisks (*) and number 6.
Note: A photocopy of a fraudulent check does not reveal the watermark (VOID) as indicated in this
example.
