EDITOR'S WORD
FOR Volume 2 Issue 4!
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & DESIGNER
If I'm being honest, I would consider this to be the rst o cial issue. Vistal started o as a random passion project but now, I want to establish it as a brand. There is a lot more content I get to feature this time around. I’ve de nitely stepped out of my comfort zone by networking with new brands and artists in order to feature unique interviews and collaborations. I just want to thank all of you for sticking with me as I explore di erent design styles. Being able to hear feedback in person and social media has really mo- tivated me to crank out more issues. I am thrilled to be doing what I love— sharing music, art, and my designs. This issue was originally meant for Febru- ary but school has been hectic and there is so much more content to include this time around. Side note:
If you feel inspired to collaborate with me at all, don't be afraid to hit me up. I hope you enjoy this issue... go listen to some new music.

“Do U Wrong (feat. Syd)” Single
Interpretation 1: Running around downtown with your crush. Posing in front of the massive murals on skyscrapers then taking pictures of one another admiring art. You can feel the hustle and bustle of the city surround you.
Interpretation 2: Adventuring around and accidentally nding a underwater cave. Impulsively jumping in and swimming with a beam of sunlight shining through. De nite mermaid vibes.
Interpretation 3: You just nd out that one of your favorite small bands happens to be coming to town, but you have work at the ice cream shop until the end of the night. You’re standing at work, looking at the clock wishing you were at the concert. Suddenly the ice cream machine breaks down and stops working. Thrilled, you speed walk out the door grinning, wanting to sprint but not wanting neighbors to look at you funny.

“Arizona ft. AUGUST 08” Amen

Interpretation 1: Your crush takes you on a surprise date to the top of a hill with an unseen eld of owers. They open the passenger door and help you step out and into the scent of wild owers. Mid-laugh, they snap a photo of you with their newly bought vintage camera.
Interpretation 2: Takes you to a place like amangiri and make you feel like you’re being surrounded by people you love. the rst 1:20 makes my heart swell and reminds me of how it feels to blissfully wake up next to someone you care about while they’re still sound asleep. kinda also feels like the warmth you feel on summer nights where you hang outside without need for a jacket.
Interpretation 3: Ending a long weekend after a festival. You are camping under the stars with your closest friends and all the other campers around you are stargazing. its cold but you’re all bundled up with your friends laughing. You’re tired but that doesn’t matter and you can feel yourself already feeling nostalgic in the moment.
Beach House
“Space Song”– Depression Cherry
Interpretation 1: You are above the coast on a cli riding your bike along the highway. You circle around the lighthouse and park the bike. There waiting are your closest friends. You smile at each other but words are not necessary, just being there is enough. You let your feet dangle o the edge of the lighthouse deck and below you are waves crashing into the rocks. Stars are out. You sit and look up in content.
Interpretation 2: In a spaceship in a corn eld overlooking cows with your pal. the sky is a strange blue at night. clouds are everywhere but really u y. you run down and fall into the corn eld and make a maize angel.
Interpretation 3: You’re at a cute lil picnic on a green hill with one of your rst major crush as a teen. You two are feeding each other PB&J sandwiches and chocolate covered straw- berries. It’s a 73 degrees out and the clouds perfectly obscure the direct heat of the sun. You two laugh, falling back onto the picnic mat. You are falling in love with the color of their eyes.

ALBUM ANALYSIS.
A new rap crew, or as they prefer to be labeled, “boy band,” called Brockhampton has popped
onto the scene in the last year. In the last six months of 2017, Brockhampton worked tirelessly, releasing a complete trilogy of full-length records in a series called SATURATION. The group has honed their musical prowess over the course of the year,
and the work they’ve put in is highly evident in SATURATION III, released on December 15th. The collective’s group dynamic, unique goals, and immaculate artistry has enabled them to reach new heights.
HAMPTON
Brockhampton prides itself
on being entirely self-su cient.
Within the group are their own photographers, designers who
work right alongside and in tandem with the rappers, producers, etc. These multi-talented artists work seamlessly to create a very speci c image. The group was brought together by founder and queer rapper Kevin Abstract. His fellow rappers
are Matt Champion, Ameer Vann, Merlyn Wood, and Dom McLennon. Their impeccable ows and rhythmic ideas are supported by producers Romil Hemnani, Russell Boring (more commonly known as Joba), Kiko Merley, Jabari Manwa, and Ciarán McDonald (more commonly known as bearface.). Their musical visions are translated into visuals by webmaster Robert Ontenient, photographer Ashlan Grey, and graphic designer and creative director Henock Sileshi
(better known as HK). Their business-related
communications go through manager
Jon Nunes, who, like the rest of the group, is also in his early twenties.
Despite the fact that they have fourteen members in their collective, they work seamlessly and their brotherhood clearly has an impact on the success of the art that they create. Living together in their “Factory” in North Hollywood, the band is highly interdependent and this reliance on one another makes all of their work more cohesive.
Brockhampton is also highly unique in the sorts of goals they’ve set. Rather than aiming solely for fame or its ensuing perks, the boy band’s focuses are set on simply doing what is atypical of rap or hip- hop crews. Founder Kevin Abstract once explained it explicitly tweeting, “No we still haven't signed and everything comes from us and we make all of the art in our house with each other and kiss sometimes.” The members take pride in what makes them unique: they met on online forums, a number of them are POC, a couple are gay/queer, and they take pride in their independence and in not being tied down to a label that sets limits and quali cations on what they can and cannot do artistically. Their greatest goals are solely to positively in uence their young fanbase and to stay true to themselves and their art.
17
Musically, SATURATION III is, without a doubt, the group’s most cohesive work. Over the course of the SATURATION trilogy, it’s clear that they’ve learned to navigate through the challenges of
such large-scale collaboration. The rhymes ow together e ortlessly and, in comparison to prior records, it feels much less like each member slapped a verse into a speci c part of a song. On tracks like “LIQUID” and “ALASKA,” the rappers seem to practically nish each other’s sentences and create warm vocal harmonies that are typically unexpected on hard rap or hip-hop records. In terms of production, each track is so fresh and di erent from the last that it feels like it shouldn’t work, but does, just like everything else the
group does. Tracks like “SISTER/NATION,” and
the three interludes entitled “CINEMA” are highly experimental with heavy sampling and simple synths that are layered to create intense textures. “TEAM” feels almost like two tracks in one, starting with a warm and pop-like guitar-based sound and lyrical melodies. This transforms in the second
half with distortion e ects layered onto the guitars, vocals, and some very thoughtfully-used panning. In stark contrast are the high energy tracks like sax-heavy “BOOGIE,” which is lled start to nish with siren-like whooping samples and a ery
drum part. “ZIPPER” has a unique bass-line and chordal movement that, coupled with the sharp rhythmic vocals, creates a circus or carnival-like sound. “JOHNNY” and “STAINS” are full of smooth guitar licks and synth pads that create space for the group’s rappers to write sleepy but entrancing verses over them. The members all work together to highlight each person’s individualistic talents and skills, but, over the last few months, have also learned how to meld all of their idiosyncratic gifts together, which is what makes SATURATION III their most cohesive and impressive body of work thus far.
BY YARYN CHOI
This group’s collective-like nature and evident gifts have gotten them immensely far already, but can only take them higher as they continue to develop and hone their skills with time and their commitment to self-su cient perfection.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: KALI UCHIS.
Karly-Marina Loaiza, better known as R&B, neo-soul singer/songwriter, Kali Uchis, has been on the come up for years now.
21
She is nally reaping the success she’s been hustling for. Kali coins her unique, sultry sound as lowrider funk, seeking in uences from Ella Fitz- gerald and Billie Holiday to LA’s very own lowrider scene, and reggae dancehall. After releasing her bedroom mixtape in 2012 entitled, Drunken Bab- ble, she saw instant support from the likes of A$AP Rocky, Snoop Dogg, and Tyler the Creator. Tyler and Kali have become close friends since, sharing the same artistic vision and background, the two hit it o right away. They have collaborated on a number of projects together and feature on each other’s albums, most recent being Kali’s successful single from her upcoming debut album, After the Storm. Upon moving to LA in 2015, Kali expresses feeling more productive with so many artists to work
with in the area. She has worked with acts like the Gorillaz, Daniel Caesar, Steve Lacy, Vince Staples, and Snoop Dogg that have propelled her into the limelight. In that same year she released her album, Por Vida, with the production from artists like Kaytranada, Diplo, BADBADNOTGOOD, Tyler the Creator and others. Por Vida was rated one of the
Top 20 R&B albums of that year by Rolling Stone. This leaves much anticipation for her debut album scheduled to come out later this year.
Who was Kali Uchis before all of the success? She was raised between her birthplace in Virginia and Pereira, Colombia. She was always interested in artistic creation and expressed her own in poetry, short lms, and music. De ant and rebellious of authority, Kali did not like high school and often skipped class. At home, her rebellious nature would get her kicked out at 17 by her father, leaving a note telling her to, “go gure it out.” Kali lived in her car where oftentimes she would stay up writing and making music in the moonlight. She picked
up a number of jobs while going to school and without a home. This is where Kali truly learned
the meaning of hard work. To Kali it has never been just about the money, but rather for the culture
and art for art’s sake. In an era where musicians are curated and controlled by artist management, Kali Uchis remains true and humble to herself and listeners by writing her own lyrics and handling the creative direction of her albums and music videos.

UP N COMING: PRODUCER
aka: tim aspan 18 years old chicago, illinois
HIP-HOP / RAP / ELECTRONIC
Where did the name Biskwiq come from?
i came up with biskwiq in english class like junior year. i wanted something to do with a breakfast aesthetic and i thought the typography of the b and q being the same thing but switched diagonally looked pretty neat. plus bisquick smacks they blocked me on twitter though lol
How would you describe your sound?
i have a hard time describing my sound to people because i’m indecisive about what i want to sound like lol it chang- es like every week. i’d say all my songs are consistently bright and bubbly kind of? i used to make mostly lo stu but i’ve been dipping into the more upbeat category as of late. this was a really bad answer to your question hahaha
Who are your in uences?
i’m super in uenced by 2000s hip hop like kanye and timbaland. inspiration wise i look to childish gambino and tyler the creator the most though. i stan/borderline worship both of them lol. i’m also obsessed with lido and monte booker
What aspects of production excite you the most?
i’m a sucker for a good choir sample. like old 1960’s ro- mantic big orchestra choir stu . those have the wildest harmonies. i’m also a huge fan of rap remixes that change the feel of the song entirely. if a song has a good remix i usually listen to that more than the original haha.also any drum sequence with a really funky pocket
26
“string cheese is
peel yogurt”
UP N COMING.
What parts of a song do you mainly focus on?
i usually try to make every aspect of a song intricate enough so that it stands out on it’s own. i typically start with either drums or a sample, then add harmonies to the sample or chords if i don’t sample, then a bassline, then melodies, and then a reckless amount of foley i forgot to mention how much i love foley in the last question i think it’s the bee’s knees. after all that jazz i either throw a rap acapella on it or send it out to a vocalist depending on if i have someone in mind for the song or not
How do you decide which hip-hop/rap songs to sample in your songs?
the rap vocals are almost always the last thing i add. most of the time i just loop the beat for like a couple hours and hum a bunch of di erent hooks of songs until i gure out what works. then i scavenge the internet for isolated vocals of the song or attempt to make my own which i’m not the best at lol
i’ve been on a smino binge for a year and a half or so he’s nuts. i also mentioned earlier that i stan tyler the creator and childish gambino
If you could choose one festival to play, which one would it be and why?
lollapalooza no doubt. i made a bet with my friends that i would play at lolla at some point in my life back when i just started making music so that would be pretty neato if i actually did. plus it’s right by where i grew up so all my friends could go and be front row and have a grand ole tyme while i make a fool of myself. that’s the dream
Current projects you are working on?
right now i’m working on a tape with some of my fellow o the jump bois (which is a super neat collective that you should totally check out shameless plug), and a solo project called “yogurt ep”

UNVALUED CLOTHING
“We want you to know that
everyone does have value, no matter what anyone's opinions are.
—Justin”Joon Lee
Unvalued came up with its name from self experiences of being under- appreciated or feeling poor valued.
It was created because of
my deep interest in fashion culture. Rather than being absorbed by high end fashion products and wanting to buy it. I was far more interested in how to produce it and make it myself. There has been many obstacles along its journey and will continue to have more obstacles and predicaments
in the future. Portioning and
distributing money for certain projects is always di cult when food, rent, and etc. are such a necessity in life. You have to decide at a certain point whether your life needs are more important or your artistic vision/work. Cav Empt and Undercover are both brands that are more interest- ed in selling pieces of clothing as art rather than pro t. ADER error is also a brand that is exceptional in cut & sew.

UNVALUED CLOTHING
I don’t think anyone should have a "favorite design", because your setting certain limitations and standards to yourself as an artist.
The future of Unvalued is definitely unknown.
With all my heart, all my strength , and all of my soul; I wish the best for it's progress and impact in the fashion community. I want to show people that a passion for art, fashion, and music can change your life in ways you can't even imagine. I want the dreamers to know that their passion can be a career, and not just a hobby. I want people to be con dent in their work and not be wary of their decisions. I want people to feel necessary and Valued.
garments are exceptional and in my opinion, are awless. A cold wall can perfectly assem- ble a look that is beyond the imagination of industrial wear. Architecture and blueprints are a huge in uence on their design.
My designs come from random doodles & thoughts.
Smoking a shit ton of weed de nitely helps. I also come up with new collections and designs when I envision a missing piece from a certain out t I am wearing that day. My designs and clothing are all revolved around myself and my own personal style. I create what I want to wear or make an imaginative piece in my head tangible. I'm never satis ed with my work as a designer and I don't think I'll ever be satis ed for quite a bit of time.

SoulectionRADIO
Established in 2011, Soulection is "a genre, a community and artist collective bringing visibility
to meaningful music and curating memorable experiences." The collective is based in LA but made their way out across cities for their 2018 North America Tour. One of those unlikely stops was San Luis Obispo located in California's central coast. All thanks to Cal Poly's very own radio station, KCPR.
San Luis Obispo is not the biggest scene for R&B, hip-hop, soul or rap music by a long run. When Soulection was scheduled to play at SLO Brew, a local bar downtown, I was suprised. The venue is de nitely on the intimate side since the stage was not even at chest level. There were no visuals but being front and center made up for that.
Andres Uribe kicked o the night and played some unreleased SZA that didn't make it on the album. Joe Kay then came on and killed it as
usual with hits like "Big Shot" o the Black Panther Soundtrack followed by classics like "Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison. Overall, it was refreshing to hear such a wide range of music all in one night.
Hopefully SLO Brew will be able to accomodate some visuals for sets in the future. And just maybe San Luis Obispo will even become a big enough city for special guests to want to perform at. For now, we've got a sold-out Jorja Smith show to look forward to in April.

PAGE TOPIC
ince, the unique R&B duo has released a handful of highly-successful singles and two full-length LPs, including their most recent entitled, “The Space Between.”
“The Space Between” has been a crowd-pleaser since it’s release in October, as it stays true to their atmospheric, kick- heavy, R&B sound but has a more re ned avor than their prior releases. In the track “Phases,” a simple piano progression leads with clear, isolated vocals leading the audi- ence to expect a stripped-backballad. Yet, the production slowly builds until about a minute in when Ullman brings in a series of hard-hitting kicks and claps with rounded synths, creating a more seamless version of the classic Majid Jordan sound.
On this record, both Al Maskati and Ullman seem to have leaned more into their respective talents, allowing them to meld together more smoothly. In “What You Do to Me,” producer Jordan keeps his percussion part slightly more subdued in an e ort to allow his partner’s lyrics and vocals to shine. In turn, Majid gives his partner free reign to distort and lter his vocals on the “Intro” and “Outro” to create the exact atmosphere that is called for leading into and out of the pol- ished record that is sandwiched in between.
