Placement Test 1
Instructions for the teachers .
This unit contains sample tests that are similar to the real tests. The purpose is to
familiarize the pupil with the technicalities, procedures and steps of the test. In
the real test, the words will be changed. All the words are from the KSSR wordlist
for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. There are 3 skills being tested in this unit:
Literacy skill 1: Able to identify and distinguish letters in the alphabet.
Literacy skill 2: Able to associate sounds with the letters of the alphabet.
Literacy skill 3: Able to blend phonemes into recognisable words.

Placement Test 1: Literacy Skill 1
Literacy skill 1: Able to identify and distinguish letters in the alphabet.
Please follow the steps below to conduct a test for Literacy Skill 1:
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2 : Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Pointing at the example, teacher draws attention to the
underlined letters.
Step 4: Teacher says the underlined letters aloud.
Step 5: Ask the pupil to repeat the action of pointing the underlined
letters and saying them aloud.
Step 6: Repeat step 5 with the rest of the words that follows.
The pupil has passed literacy skill 1 if the pupil is able to answer correctly for 3
out of 5 words or more.

Literacy skill 2: Able to associate sounds with the letters of the alphabet
Please follow the steps below to conduct the test for Literacy Skill 2:
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2: Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Pointing at the example, teacher draws attention to the
underlined letters.
Step 4: Teacher says the sounds of the underlined letters aloud.
Step 5: Ask the pupil to repeat the action of pointing the underlined
letters and saying the sound of the letters aloud.
Step 7: Repeat step 6 with the following words on the page.
Saying the syllable of the underline letters correctly is considered right. Saying the
whole word is also right. The pupil has passed literacy skill 2 if the pupil is able to
answer correctly for 3 out of 5 words or more.

Step 3: The teacher points at the example to draw attention to the
word.
Step 4: The teacher says the word aloud.
Step 5: Ask the pupil to repeat the action of pointing the word and
saying the word being test aloud.
Step 7: Repeat step 6 with the following words on the page.
The pupil has passed literacy skill 3 if the pupil is able to answer correctly for 3out of
5 words or more.

the words are from the KSSR wordlist for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. There
are 3 skills being tested in this unit :
Literacy skill 4: Able to understand and use the language at phrase
level.
Literacy skill 5: Able to understand and use the language at sentence
level.
Literacy Skill 6: Able to understand the main idea in a simple text.

Please follow the steps below to conduct the test for Literacy Skill 4.
Reading 1
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2: Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Teacher says the word aloud.
Step 4: Pupil says the word aloud.
Step 5: Repeat step 4 with the rest of the words that follows.
If the pupil is able to read 3/5 or more of the words listed in the page,the
pupil has passed the test for Literacy Skill 4.
Reading 2
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2 : Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Pupil says the phrases aloud.
Step 4: Repeat step 4 with the rest of the the phrases that follows.
If the pupil is able to read 3/5 or more of the words listed in the page,the
pupil has passed the test for Literacy Skill 4.

Please follow the steps below to conduct the test for Literacy Skill 5.
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2 : Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Pupil reads the sentences.
Reading the sentences correctly is considered right. The student has
passed Literacy Skill 5 if the pupil is able to answer correctly for 2 out
of 5 sentences or more.
Reading 4
Please follow the steps below to conduct the test for Literacy Skill 5.
Step 1: Teacher reads the instruction aloud.
Step 2 Teacher explains the instruction to the pupil.
Step 3: Pupil reads the sentences.
Reading the sentences correctly is considered right. The student has
passed Literacy Skill 5 if the pupil is able to answer correctly for 2 out
of 5 sentences or more.
