St. Michael’s School
EXTRA SUBJECTS
September 2019
EXTRA SUBJECTS
We are delighted to present to you this year’s programme of extra lessons
and clubs that are available to your child.
The clubs and activities run for a total of 30 weeks each year and,
depending on the term, run for different lengths as follows:
Michaelmas Term: Music x 11 weeks
Sport & non sport clubs x 10 weeks
Lent Term: Music x 10 weeks
Sport & non sport clubs x 10 weeks
Summer Term: Music x 9 weeks
Sport & non sport clubs x 10 weeks
The Extra Subjects calendar, as well as a copy of this booklet, is available
on the school website; http://www.stmichaelsschool.com/Extra-Curriculum-
prep or http://www.stmichaelsschool.com/Extra-Curriculum-pre-prep
Age Groups
The age group varies from club to club. Please check whether your child is
eligible to participate in a particular activity.
Balloting
If a club is over-subscribed, a ballot will take place. The ballot will
determine the places in the club and on the waiting list.
Cancellation
Group activities
To cancel a group club or activity, notice must be given in writing in the first
half of term to cancel the club or activity at the end of the current term. If
2
notice is given during the second half of term, cancellation will occur after
the first half of the following term.
Individual lessons
To cancel an individual music lesson, notice must be given in writing by the
end of the first half term to finish at the end of the current term. If notice
is given during the second half of term, cancellation will occur at the end of
the following term. This is because we have to provide our visiting teachers
with a term’s notice to change their contracted hours.
Subscription
Clubs and activities are subscribed to for the whole of the academic year
and must be re-subscribed to annually. A letter is sent out during the
Summer Term asking you to request the clubs and activities that you would
like your child to participate in for the following year. This does not relate
to Speech & Drama classes, which are ongoing until cancelled.
Timetable
A timetable is published at the beginning of each year, outlining the clubs
and activities available. This may change from year to year, so please check
before signing up that the club is running.

MUSIC
Individual Music Lessons per 15-minute lesson £65.00 per term
30-minute lesson £130.00 per term
With the exception of piano, individual music lessons are available from
Form 3. Miss Tucker, as Head of Music, is responsible for all individual
lessons and she will advise your child when, where and with whom their
lesson is scheduled. Music lesson times do change from year to year and
do not automatically carry on to the next academic year. Please note that
lessons may be timetabled before or after school to accommodate the
number of music lessons requested. Timetabling is extremely difficult
given the number of activities available to children, not only at school but
outside school as well, therefore please inform us on the request form of
any outside activities which may affect when your child can attend a lesson,
as changes can only be made if a clash occurs with a club or activity at
school. Completing the request form is your commitment that your child
will attend the allocated lesson and that you understand this may be before
or after school.
Friday, 8.45 a.m. Lesson
Please do not request to avoid this time. A pupil whose lesson is scheduled
for 8.45 a.m. on Fridays will be able to participate in their class assembly
and should also be able to receive any merit awards, as assembly normally
finishes after 9.00 a.m. Please ensure your child informs their music
teacher in advance if they need to swap their lesson for the week when
their class is taking assembly.

be offered individual lessons.

All children from Form 3 who attend a music lesson, with the exception of guitar and
percussion, must have a 20-minute theory lesson each week. Theory lessons for
Forms 3-4 are at lunchtime. Theory lessons for Forms 5-6 are at 8.00 a.m.

Saxophone) term

Hire
Instruments are available to hire from the school. Hire starts at £20.00 per
term increasing £5.00 per term to a maximum of £35.00. Please return
hired instruments to Miss Hills, when no longer required, to ensure that the
hire fee is removed from your account.
Increasing lesson time
If you would like to increase your child’s individual instrumental lesson
from 15 to 30 minutes, please put this request in writing to Miss Tucker or
speak to Miss Hills in the School Office.
Missed Lessons
If a lesson has been missed due to the teacher’s absence, then this lesson
will be made up when practical. Missed lessons due to an educational visit
or a school holiday / non-pupil day will also be made up. Unfortunately,
6
lessons missed due to a pupil absence or a sporting fixture cannot be made
up.
Music Notebook
All children who take individual music lessons will be given a small
notebook, which teachers use to write lesson notes. They also give an
indication of the number of lessons your child has had each term and how
many lessons are outstanding. Please check this book regularly and make
sure that your child takes it to every music lesson.
Reports
Progress reports for individual music lessons will be sent out with the Mid-
Year and End-of-Year academic reports.
Music Lessons Outside School
On occasion, we are aware of pupils having instrumental lessons at St
Michael's and additional lessons on the same instrument with another
teacher outside school. Miss Tucker does not believe that this is beneficial
to the pupils’ learning. Confusion can arise as all teachers approach lessons
in a slightly different way. For beginners, this may mean misunderstanding
how to hold the instrument or how to make a sound. For pupils who are
taking grades, this may mean too much music is presented for practice. In
all cases, it can be difficult for both the pupil and teacher.
To help prevent this confusion and to enable pupils to achieve their
potential, we strongly advise that pupils, in these early stages of their
learning, have just one teacher. If parents wish for their children to learn
with a teacher outside school, St Michael's will still welcome these pupils
into the ensembles and orchestras when they have achieved the required
standard (please see Miss Tucker if you are unsure).
7
CHOIRS
Miss Tucker is responsible for the three choirs: Junior, Training and Senior.
Junior Choir
Forms 2 and 3. Wednesday - 3.45-4.25 p.m. Limited to 38 places, which are
balloted. Please indicate on the form if you would like your child to be considered.
Priority is given to Form 3 children.
Miss Tucker will send out letters to parents regarding the Training Choir
and Senior Choir in the Summer Term. Entry is through audition.
Training Choir
Forms 4 and 5. Friday lunchtime at 12.55 p.m. Entrance by audition.
Limited to 40 places.
Senior Choir
Forms 5 and 6. Thursday lunchtime at 12.55 p.m. Entrance by audition with
priority given to Year 6 children. To be considered for this choir, children must
have sung with the Training Choir for the year prior to entry. Limited to 40 places.
Regrettably, there are not enough places available for all current Form 4
Training Choir members in the Senior Choir, so Miss Tucker makes these
difficult decisions based on working with the children throughout the year.
Those children who are not selected for the Senior Choir will continue in
the Training Choir for a second year and will be re-auditioned at the end of
the summer term of Form 5 when they will be given priority.
