HOME FOR

THE HOLIDAYS

The Jackson House is an interfaith community
crisis center - providing short-term emergency

assistance for those who need it most.

By DEANNA ATKINSON MCGILL THANKSGIVING COCKTAIL EVENT | Saturday, November 23 | The Jackson House | jacksonhouse.org

Photography by LORI SPARKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

“THE BEST-LAID plans of mice and men often go awry”
is a common response when plans change. Janie Smith of
the Jackson House in Hot Springs agrees, “I never intended
to be at Jackson House. Dad started it but I went another
direction.” Eventually Janie returned with no intention to
stay, but then three hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast in 2005.
The house was filled with refugees in crisis - doubling the
occupancy - and locals facing poverty during the recession.
With so much to do and so many improvements to be
made, Janie’s plans changed recognized a heartfelt need in
her community.

The Jackson House is an interfaith community crisis center,
providing short-term emergency assistance for those who
need it most. The addition to lodging - the house provides
a portfolio of crisis intervention designed to help clients
utilize community resources, access direct assistance and
receive counseling to break the cycle of poverty that often
results from a crisis situation. The Jackson House currently
serves 25,000+ people. This translates to one in three people
in Garland County. “It seems excessive but it matches the
poverty rate for our county. When the main income in the
area is tourism and retirement, we do the best we can in
those industries since many are living paycheck to paycheck,”
explains Janie.

Volunteers comprise the administration and logistics
for the house. “We work with churches, schools, retirees,
professionals and homemakers. It takes the coordination of
many people and services to address such a weighty need,”
says Janie. The operating budget of the Jackson House is
stretched thin with the increased demand in Garland County.
Resources are required to continue effective programming
as well as maintain to the historic home - built in 1800 and
signed onto the national historic registry as the Dougherty
House. Janie recalls, “This house was chosen as the place
to help people by my dad for a reason. He wanted a home, a
place that felt safe and welcoming. Not a cold social service
type of feel. We continue to honor that choice to provide a
warm hug of services.”

Janie will welcome patrons to the Thanksgiving Cocktail
Event for an evening of friendly fellowship that supports
these critical services provided by the Jackson House -
breaking the cycle of poverty in Garland County. “We
are keeping the peace with our work. These people are in
desperate situations which can lead to crime if we’re not
helping,” Janie elaborates. “Dorothy Morris and her team
are working hard to make this event unique.” Guests will
be greeted with a signature cocktail and party favors – as
well as entertainment and Thanksgiving-themed heavy hors
d’oeuvres. This is the perfect way to count your blessings by
being a blessing to the Jackson House and community.

Q&A Photography by LORI SPARKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC Member SIPC
WITH BRAD HUDGENS

Investment Professional & Inviting Arkansas
Restaurant Review Contributor

One of your hobbies is writing restaurant reviews.
Why do you enjoy this?

I’ve always loved the tastes and textures of unique and great foods
and love dining out. My articles allow me to express my thoughts
about some of the best restaurants in Arkansas. It’s like my “18 holes
of golf ”. While I don’t accept payment for writing, I have a blast
interacting with restauranteurs, so it all works out well. I generally
only write about restaurants that I enjoy, and most restaurants have
redeeming qualities. If you stick with my suggestions, you normally
won’t be disappointed. I’m hoping people will get out and try these
establishments. My goal is to help promote these local businesses
to help confirm great restaurants in Arkansas, and throw in a bit of
humor along the way.

Do you also cook?

Yes, I particularly love preparing ethnic dishes, but with a twist and
very upscale. I enjoy entertaining large groups in my home, and
donate a couple of dinners per year to local charities. I go for wow-
factor on presentations and flavors. Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Indian
and Italian are on the top of my cooking list.

What do you do to unwind?

Beyond dining out and cooking, I’m an avid tennis player. While
certainly not great, I can generally hold my own and it’s a wonderful
stress relief. I also love to travel and usually play tennis when I do.
Work keeps me pretty busy so it seems there’s never enough time for
all of my passions.

Are you from Arkansas?

I grew up in Hot Springs, and began my career in Little Rock and had
a stint in NYC. We later moved to Minneapolis, Dallas and then St.
Louis (managing investment facilities) before moving back home to
raise children. Arkansas is home!

Tell us about your work.

I’ve been in the investment business for a very long time (am I really
that old? Ha), and I love what I do! I care about my clients and I
work long hours to try and achieve the best outcomes for them. I
was recently honored by a national business magazine, which was
humbling. Luckily, I have a great staff working with me, so I give
them much of the credit.

How do you give back to the community?

I’ve been a volunteer and financially supported many charities for
many years. My involvement includes the AR Community Foundation
(former chairman), the Documentary Film Institute (former co-chair),
Scouting, the Science Museum, First United Methodist Church and
many more. Giving back is important to me, and I hope to inspire
others to do the same.

Photography by Lori Sparkman PhotographyDIANA
SHEARON

As a child, Diana Shearon used white butcher paper wrappings
for her drawings. Today she reflects on the fields and forests of
her childhood as the catalyst for her creations. Plein aire painting
connects Diana’s rural experiences to landscapes and brings her
back to nature. Her work is available at Red Door Gallery. Diana
shares her insight and unique perspective that she’s maintained as
an artist throughout her life.

I N S P I R AT I O N . . .
■ I am drawn to nature and beauty. Plein aire painting - painting on
site - brings me closer to my subject matter. Often it may only be a small
6 x 8 inch oil study, but from that memory of the moment, the colors

Q&A and the feel of the atmosphere can be captured in a larger work.
FAVORITE ART FORM...
■ I primarily paint in oils, but love to draw with charcoal and pencil too - often creating a small sketch
before beginning the painting.

EVOLUTION AS AN ARTIST…
■ Painting has always been my first love. For years, I used watercolors or paint by numbers as a child.
I requested a set of acrylic paints from the Sears & Roebuck catalogue and received a set for Christmas
when I was 16 years old. It was pure joy painting that Christmas candle on the kitchen table. Career and
family kept me focused on graphic design and illustration for many years - painting as a full-time artist
has changed how I approach my work. There is a movement of light in my work. When painting from
life outdoors or a floral still life in my studio, “light” plays an important role in my passage. I am still
learning how to capture it. A painting instructor caught me changing the light on a structure from
where I had originally placed it. He said, “You are chasing the light, but that is okay,” so I keep
chasing the light.

ADVICE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS...
■ Keep working and challenging yourself. The last few years I have been fortunate to study
with several very noted national artists who helped me tremendously. Read books, look at
art, experiment and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.
