2022 TASTE OF LITTLE ROCK HONOREE
ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS/INTERNIST, UAMS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH ODEN
WHY TRY TASTE OF LITTLE ROCK?
“We are big foodies and love being connected to the local restaurant
scene and its unique culture. Taste of Little Rock is the ultimate
sampling of so much creative cuisine, which is what I prefer!
It brings together my favorite things - local restaurants, the chance to
engage in fellowship and raising money for the bright young people
of Arkansas! The UA Little Rock scholarships it supports is the most
important to me. I received a scholarship to attend UA Little Rock and
it changed my trajectory. Being part of this project that allows me to
give back is icing on the cake.
At UA Little Rock, culture starts from the top. I have such deep
respect and admiration for Chancellor Christina S. Drale - she is
a phenomenal person and I love being connected to her vision. In
addition, the positive culture permeates throughout the leadership-
they are focused, kind, compassionate people who care deeply about
our state not just UA Little Rock. That shows in everything they do.”
Affordable and relevant, a great metropolitan university is critical to the
infrastructure of a vibrant city. It also requires a strong alumni association
that’s engaged in civic and business leadership throughout the Capital City.
UA Little Rock boasts both – with a shared vision for the future.
As UA Little Rock celebrates the success of its alumni, the university and
alumni reflect on the role the institution plays in the continued economic
development of Central Arkansas and the wealth of knowledge is offer
current students.

CMLAASSTSER Dr. Rhys Branman, M.D.

Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon Since 1999
When is it time to
consider a lift?
A “lift” or Mastopexy is a surgical
procedure in which the lower part of
the breast is tightened and the nipple
areolar complex is moved superiorly.
This allows the breast to take on a
more youthful or perkier appearance.
Reasons to consider a “lift” include a
saggy or deflated appearance of the
breasts, asymmetry of the breasts
and a nipple areolar complex that
appears to be pointing in a downward
direction.
When is it time to consider
a reduction with or without
implants?
Typically, a reduction is not performed
with implants in my experience due to
the high revision rate of the procedure
and the unpredictability of the final
implant position. Think of a reduction
as a larger “lift” procedure where
typically more tissue is removed with
the reduction.

How COVID Vaccines
Affect Women Receiving
Screening Mammograms
As we move into year two of the coronavirus pandemic, we
continue to discover the impact the virus, and its vaccines, have on
our overall health.
It has recently come to attention that women may develop swollen
lymph nodes under the arm after receiving the Moderna and
Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines. The enlarged lymph nodes
may be palpable or detected asymptomatically on mammograms.
While swollen lymph nodes with an otherwise normal screening
mammogram is a rare occurrence, reported in only 0.02%-0.04%
of screening mammograms, higher rates of enlarged lymph
nodes are being reported on mammograms in women following
COVID-19 vaccination.
With more than 10% of Arkansans being fully vaccinated, it
is important that women understand this is a normal immune
reaction to a vaccine, and the lymph nodes should return to
normal within a few days or weeks.
To reduce the chance of swollen lymph nodes appearing on your
screening mammogram after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination,
The Society of Breast Imaging suggests you consider scheduling
your screening mammogram before your first COVID-19 vaccine
dose or 4-6 weeks after the second dose if, and only if, it does not
unduly delay care. If you are experiencing a breast problem or
concern, do not delay your mammogram appointment. You may
also not want to delay your screening mammogram appointment
if you are late for your yearly mammogram.
At CARTI, we have updated our intake form to include whether
you have received the COVID-19 vaccine, when, and in which
arm it was administered. This will help the breast radiologist as
they interpret your mammogram. Because both the COVID-19
vaccination and screening mammograms are vital for your overall
health, it is very important that you keep both appointments.

Emily Sledge
Arkansas Urology
Director, Centerview Surgery Center
DAY AT WORK
One of my favorite attributes of healthcare is that no workday
is typical. A few of my daily responsibilities include overseeing
the staff and clinical operations of the surgery center as well as
collaborating with ancillary departments for ways to improve
care and workflows. I also work closely with our physicians
and executives to ensure that we are offering the appropriate
procedures for our patients, providing high-quality care, while
remaining efficient and cost-effective.
BEGINNING INTERESTS
In college I became increasingly aware of people graduating
with degrees but unable to find work in their fields. I knew
that nursing was a profession with opportunities, specialties
and different levels of care that I could easily find something
that suited me. That, coupled with my genuine love for helping
people, made nursing an easy choice. After graduation, I began
working in the operating room at an area hospital and knew
that I had found my home.
CAREER EVOLUTION
One of my first assignments as a new grad in the operating
room was a robotic prostatectomy. I was instantly intrigued
by the technology, which was in its early stages at that time,
and pushed myself to learn more about the procedure and how
it improved patient outcomes. That experience led me to join
the hospital’s urology team, where I was involved in a variety
of urological procedures on a daily basis. As my knowledge
and experience level grew, I began transitioning out of direct
patient care and into leadership.
ARKANSAS UROLOGY EXPERIENCE
Arkansas Urology has provided an opportunity for me to
experience a new side of healthcare. We are challenged to think
outside the box, and it is refreshing to find that change can be
implemented instantly if needed. Arkansas Urology has also
encouraged me to become an active member of the community
by participating in programs and fundraisers that serve
Arkansans.
LOVE THE WORK
Each day presents a new challenge or learning opportunity, and
I feel fortunate to be surrounded by people who are committed
to learning and growing with me.
ADVICE
Never underestimate the power of a positive attitude and a
strong work ethic. Negativity or unwillingness to put in extra
effort will often stunt the professional growth of the most
skilled and knowledgeable people.

Chris Shenep
Director, Arkansas Urology Foundation
Since 1996, Arkansas Urology has
been the state’s premier urology
practice, providing comprehensive
treatment services to men and
women of all ages. Over the years,
we have been committed to providing
Arkansans with the latest innovations in medical technology
and surgical techniques to our patients through our
commitment to urological specialties. Our physicians and
professional staff comprise one of the most experienced
and respected urological practices in the country as we treat
approximately 110,000 patients a year at 14 facilities across
the state.
In November of 2019, I was honored to join the AU team
and begin building the Arkansas Urology Foundation from
the ground up. It’s been an exciting time. It’s a privilege to
raise funds and heighten awareness for the programs and
services of Arkansas Urology.
Over two years ago, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to be able to join Arkansas Urology, which is so well-
known and has changed so many lives across Arkansas.
They wanted to build a foundation from the ground up to
do things here that have never been done. I think it really
shows the vision of our leadership and our physicians from
a philanthropic standpoint.
In addition to other programming, the nonprofit
foundation focuses on providing free health screenings to
men across the state. Shenep said the potential impact of
events, such as Kickoff to Men’s Health, has proven nothing
short of lifesaving for a handful of men every year. With
the support of the foundation, those efforts can expand
alongside other events.
Guys are so bad about going to the doctor generally, so the
last thing we want is to have a guy prevented from coming
to see us due to the cost of an exam. You look at the history
of Kickoff to Men’s Health over the past 17 years, and the
number of men we’ve screened for free is impressive.
What’s most gratifying aren’t the hundreds who check
out OK, but the one where we found something on one of
their tests and started that treatment conversation. Sooner
or later, that could be cancer. If it’s not caught early enough,
that’s when it really gets serious.
