SINGLE PARENT
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
By KIM MEYER-WEBB | Photography by SARAH ODEN
Shot on location at UA Little Rock
SINCE ITS inception, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund
has helped single parents navigate the challenges of pursuing a
higher education. The organization’s pragmatic approach includes
mentoring and career coaching, in addition to financial support.
The scholarships can be utilized for tuition + school supplies or
household expenses and even childcare. The practicality of this
mission fulfillment work has proven results. More than 1,600
scholarships were awarded last year with success stories that
continue to impress. UA Little Rock Associate Professor Janea
Snyder realizes the transformative power of education and the
invaluable resources that Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship
Fund offers to recipients like herself.
“Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund helped me obtain
a college degree and believed that my educational goals were
achievable,” explains Janea. She received a scholarship in 2005
while attending UA Little Rock. Her daughter Deja, only two-
years-old at the time, remains her constant motivation. “Deja
inspired my ambition to do all I could do to ensure her future was
promising.” The residual value of the ASPSF investment in its
students not only strengthens communities with viable economic
impact, it emboldens families to imagine < and chase the dreams >
of a brighter future.
Janea remembers a childhood filled with obstacles that inspired
her pursuit of knowledge. “I realized our family income was
limited and witnessed financial hardships; this fueled my desire to
work extra hard for what I want.” After graduating from North
Little Rock High School and earning a scholarship from ASPSF,
her commitment to the university is unwavering – today she is
a tenured faculty member. She recognizes UA Little Rock as a
critical component of the Capital City and offers her experience
as a resource to help other single parents succeed. “UA Little
Rock reminds me that my education here has been instrumental
in achieving my professional goals and making Little Rock the
city in which I live.” She serves on the ASPSF Board of Directors
and as a UA Little Rock faculty mentor to recipients who attend
the university.
For nearly 40 years, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund
has cultivated dignity and self-respect in the recipient as well as
educational opportunities of the children. This equation is an
investment in the vitality of our state. “Arkansas Single Parent
Scholarship Fund provides a better future for the children of
single parents and it inspires those children to also seek higher
education. It will forever be a ripple effect of a scholarship that
continues to give, give, and give - truly impacting generations to
come,” she emphasizes. “The benefits of a college education are
not limited to the person earning the degree – but also positively
impacts the family and the community.”
Janea’s devotion to Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund,
UA Little Rock and the Natural State is steadfast. “I will be forever
grateful for the hope and support it provided when I needed it
most as a single parent pursuing my undergraduate degree.”
