FOR IT IS IN GIVING THAT WE RECEIVE - FRANCIS OF ASSISI
At CHI St. Vincent, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health
of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all.
We are a vibrant health care ministry with a legacy dating back to 1888 when the Sisters of Mercy
in Hot Springs and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Little Rock answered a call - a call to help a
community in need.
It was a partnership between the Sisters and one local family – the Hagers – that created the first
hospital in Arkansas, now known as CHI St. Vincent Infirmary. The Infirmary stands as a beacon of
hope for generations of Arkansas families. Now, 133 years later, a new vision can be realized through
the generosity of many to meet the changing needs of our community and create a healthier future for
the people of Arkansas and beyond.
CHI St. Vincent Foundation was founded in 1979. The Foundation is resolute in our commitment to providing support for our Arkansas ministry. We are inspired
by faith, driven by innovation, and powered by our humanity. We understand how the power of one can cause a ripple effect on our community. We are St. Vincent
Strong, thanks to our community of donors who demonstrate human kindness with their generous support. Together, we are making a real impact on the health of
the people around us.

DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY AND GROWTH FOR TEAM WALT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI SPARKMAN PHOTOGRPAHY
“Born in Puerto Rico, my family didn’t have any means. In my family, no
one had graduated college - many even not from high school. We moved to
the mainland when I was 15 years old. I tried quitting high school to focus
on my mowing business because I was making about $300 a week. That
was almost as much as my dad was making in Puerto Rico to feed ALL of
us, so I was SET! My parents did not let me. Honestly, I feel UA Little Rock
chose me. I was offered the EAST Scholarship and I decided to go. I lost the
scholarship with low grades, but I didn’t want to disappoint my parents.
What turned it around for me was that I got my first painting job. It was my
first trade outside of mowing, so I didn’t know how to bid it. I vowed to never
feel any less than I was worth, so I hit the books hard. Decided to go the
business track, I was a computer engineering major and didn’t look up until I
graduated with a bachelors and a masters degree.
For me, that mowing company became a roofing company, and that roofing
company became one of the largest residential construction companies in
Arkansas. I ran it for 20 years and sold it. After a long break, I fell in love with
financial technology and now I’m the director of strategy and growth for
Team Walt, a fintech owned by Southern Bancorp. They have allowed me
to keep my entrepreneurial mindset as I find ways to help build applications
that could potentially help kids like me escape poverty. I am so thankful and
grateful for this opportunity to have impact and be a wealth builder for all.
It is easy to dismiss college, as people often do, by saying you don’t learn
anything while going. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I
look back and know that I could’ve never grown the business the way I did
without the education I received at UA Little Rock.”
Affordable and relevant, a great metropolitan university is critical to the
infrastructure of a vibrant city. It also requires a strong alumni association that’s
engaged in civic and business leadership throughout the Capital City. UA Little
Rock boasts both – with a shared vision for the future.
As UA Little Rock celebrates the success of its alumni, the university and alumni
reflect on the role the institution plays in the continued economic development of
Central Arkansas and the wealth of knowledge is offer current students.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Shelia Vaught
Hair by Rebecca Dickson with Illume in the Heights
Makeup by Bridget Baltimore with Barbara/Jean
SINCE THE inaugural Festival of Trees in 1976, Shelia
Vaught has remained dedicated to the CARTI mission. Her
experience includes chairman of Festival of Trees, the first
female president of the CARTI Foundation and membership
to the CARTI Board of Trustees since 1995. Her devotion
to countless other organizations is also noteworthy. CARTI
Executive Director Jennifer Selig elaborates, “Her resume reads
like a historical account of fundraising events and support of
nonprofit organizations.” It’s a collection of memories that is
shared among friends and colleagues.
Throughout her childhood, Shelia remembers spending time
at All Souls Church in Scott and at related events. Later, she
attended the University of Central Arkansas – a place that
remains a priority as a proud alumna and former member of the
board of trustees. As owner and director of Little Rock School
of Dance, Shelia developed the potential + character of students
for more than three decades. She is renowned for her gracious
spirit and steadfast leadership.
Shelia’s service to others is unparalleled with this simple
philosophy, “Follow your passion and volunteer everywhere you
can.” Her pursuit includes a tenure with Arkansas Easterseals
as well as Junior League of Little Rock – both are impressive.
Former Junior League of Little Rock President Tisha Gribble
recalls, “I have respected ‘Miss Shelia’ ever since I was a little
girl at her dance studio. She serves the community in so many
ways and does so much good. I asked her to be my Junior League
of Little Rock mentor and advisor during my term as president,
she continues to inspire me.” Jennifer adds, “Throughout her
years of involvement with CARTI and Festival of Trees,
Shelia has recruited auxiliary members as well as sponsors and
has stewarded many of our original volunteers who continue
to serve today. This is a true testament to her leadership and
commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer.”
Despite her busy schedule – spending time with grandchildren,
planning weddings and continuing projects she adores – Shelia
remains optimistic and humble “My heart is so full of gratitude
when I think about the blessings and opportunities I’ve been
given over the years. I was raised in a small country town and
it’s been the source of literally thousands of these opportunities.
I’ve loved the life I’m given and want to live it to the fullest.”

“I am a multi-generational Arkansan and have lived in three different areas of the
state – Fayetteville, Arkadelphia and Little Rock – all of which I have supported
through volunteering. I am blessed by the relationships and friendships that I have
made throughout my life and love our state. My greatest passion is to improve our
communities through quality education and health initiatives, and I plan to continue to
devote my time to those areas.” - Melissa Hawkins

“Our state and its people are uniquely special. While many of us may
become accustomed to the unique kindness of our state’s greatest
resource – its people, those who visit here notice it instantly. There is a
genuineness, thoughtfulness and compassion that is truly unique to our
citizenry. This is ‘home’ in the truest sense of the word, and we feel an
obligation to treat the entire community as a family.” - Mark Middleton

“My dad provided a great model for service that I watched as I grew up.
He enjoyed helping improve other people’s lives, and I inherited that from
him. We would tell any young person to just dive into community service.
As you grow and realize what means the most to you, the good things
you do serving others will be what you remember most – not the things
you accomplish in business. Everybody needs help at some point in their
lives, and those with the ability to help have an obligation to do so. It’s
very satisfying, but also humbling knowing so many people depend on
the help of others to get through difficult times.” - William Clark

Considered a premier competitive duck-hunting tournament, Arkansas Duck Derby
is presented annually by the Conway Regional Health Foundation. Proceeds from
Arkansas Duck Derby support the Conway Regional Men’s Health Initiative – an
awareness + education program for men and the Conway Regional Guest Lodging
Assistance Program. Dr. Thad Hardin adds, “Men’s Health is a cause that is near
and dear to my heart. I see too many men that are unhealthy and how it affects their
families and our community. Through Conway Regional and the Duck Derby, I want
to educate men and take healthcare to them. And I hope that will lead to our families
and community thriving.”

For more than a century, the Rotary Club of Conway has provided civic
leaders with a legacy of service above self. The club enriches the lives of
fellow residents through service, education and leadership with effective
volunteers that transform the community. Cortney Kennedy shares, “I love
my community’s focus on others. From pulling together to help during
natural disasters to running the youth football league, the community of
Conway is one that wants to see to the well-being of one another.”

The UAMS Physician Assistant Program produces PA graduates who
practice transformative patient and family centered care in a broad range
of medical knowledge and skills. Values include embracing cultural
diversity and collaborating effectively with all members of the health
care team. Additionally program participants contribute to the profession
through leadership, education and service. Jami Howell recalls, “My earliest
memory of volunteering would probably be helping out with my mom
while she worked on Bargain Barn for the Junior League of Little Rock!
She has always demonstrated selflessness and it is one of the most valued
lessons she has taught me.”
