Why UA Little Rock?

“ Besides being a mama’s girl and not wanting to leave
town (let alone the state) to attend college, I was
impressed with the journalism chairman and members
of the journalism faculty at UA Little Rock at the time. I’d
first met them in 1979, at a summer workshop designed
to get students of color interested in journalism as a
career. After entering UA Little Rock in the fall of 1980, I
finally graduated in August 2000 after what I have widely
joked was a “14-year spring break.”
My first Arkansas Democrat job as a city desk news
assistant, which I began at the end of my freshman year,
was one of the jobs whose availability was regularly
posted on the bulletin board in the UA Little Rock
journalism department. Although I dropped out of school
in 1984, I managed to bring to the newspaper much of
what I’d learned in class – respect for the Fourth Estate
in general; the importance of fairness as well as accuracy
and (although some of my old editors may disagree with
this!) the importance of deadlines – and build a career
despite not having finished my degree at the time.
When I dropped back in school in 1998, my continuing
education at UA Little Rock and my experience at the
Democrat-Gazette complemented each other perfectly.
I’m always happy to have a chance to tell the many
stories that come out of UA Little Rock as it has grown
in prominence and influence and cemented its place as
one of the educational backbones of our community and
state. I especially got a kick out of being the reporter
who wrote the High Profile cover story on UA Little
“Rock’s first woman chancellor.

Affordable and relevant, a great metropolitan university is
critical to the infrastructure of a vibrant city. It also requires
a strong alumni association that’s engaged in civic and
business leadership throughout the Capital City. UA Little
Rock boasts both – with a shared vision for the future.

As UA Little Rock celebrates the success of its alumni, the
university and alumni reflect on the role the institution plays
in the continued economic development of Central Arkansas
and the wealth of knowledge is offer current students.

ANN DIXON PYLE MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY

CLASS OF 1985
Executive Director - Arkansas Bar Foundation
Memorable Experience
There were many teachers and administration staff who
left lasting influences on my life and prepared me for my
journey beyond the Mount. However, Mrs. Mary Logan
was my mentor in many ways. She taught one of my
favorite classes, International Relations, where we learned
about the importance of world politics and how to have
our own belief system while accepting the different beliefs
of others. As the faculty adviser for student government, I
worked with her often and she also chaperoned an annual
summer trip to Europe.
Most Valuable Lesson
I left high school as an independent-minded woman with
critical thinking skills and the ability to write, communicate
and study well. I was prepared for college and life beyond
school and appreciate the invaluable gifts of faith, kindness
and teamwork. I am grateful for my lifelong friends I made
during those four years.
MSM Sisterhood
It means being a small part of something much bigger than
myself. It felt that way as a student, and it still feels that
way today. I know now, as I learned then, that being a part
of a team accomplishes great things – a sisterhood. As a
dear friend/mentor once taught me years later, “credit is
infinitely divisible.”

LORIE WHITE MOUNT ST. MARY ACADEMY

CLASS OF 1992
General Manager - Little Rock Port Location, Amazon
Most Valuable Lesson
I was exposed to the Mercy Values which were ingrained in
the culture of the school. I had the opportunity to volunteer
in the community. Those experiences are invaluable,
especially as a high school student. I learned the positive
impact of community service and demonstrating empathy. I
learned that I could be innovative and inquisitive, but make
mistakes. These values are so important in the business
world and leading diverse teams.
MSM Experience
It set the foundation for me in every aspect of my life.
The culture encouraged me to dream big and have the
confidence to achieve my goals. My teachers and coaches
set the bar high, and guided me along my path through
servant leadership.
Today vs. Yesterday
Technology and social media has changed the educational
process from the typical class room environment. The
way in which students and teachers connect has changed,
especially during a global pandemic. I had the opportunity
to meet with a group of teachers and administrators in the
last year. I quickly observed how much the teachers still
care about students and their future. They are incredibly
dedicated to providing the best environment for learning
and opportunities.

A WORLD
WITHOUT
CANCER

Every February, World Cancer Day calls us to imagine a world
without cancer. A world where we wouldn’t need advanced
technology, expert doctors or personalized care plans. A world
where we would drive past treatment centers on our way to
new adventures. A world where you wouldn’t even be reading
these words right now.

While we join the rest of the world in dreaming of a day
where cancer no longer exists, we know we’re not there - not
yet, anyway. But CARTI is fighting to change that every day.

To get us closer to that shared vision, we provide preventive
screenings that can identify cancer at an early stage when
treatment is more likely to be effective. The following
screenings are available at our treatment locations across
the state.

• Mammogram Screening - Available at The Breast
Center at CARTI, with facilities in Little Rock and
North Little Rock, mammograms are recommended for
women starting at age 45.

• Prostate Exam - Available at CARTI Urology in Pine
Bluff, prostate exams are recommended at age 50 for
men who are at average risk, and 45 for men at high
risk, for developing prostate cancer.

• Low Dose Lung Screening - Available at CARTI
Cancer Centers in Little Rock and Russellville, a low
dose lung screening is appropriate for anyone with an
elevated risk for developing lung cancer.

• Genetic Testing - Available at CARTI’s Cancer
Genetics and Risk Management Clinic, genetic testing
identifies if a person has an elevated risk of developing
cancer. This knowledge helps healthcare providers
create a personalized management plan to either catch
cancer early or reduce your risk of developing cancer.

While we don’t have a world without cancer just yet, we do
have ways to fight it. Until that world is here, you have CARTI.

For more information about preventive
screenings at CARTI, visit CARTI.com

train your body to make the same specific protein the novel coronavirus

how to fight the virus. The vaccines essentially turn the virus’s most

In clinical trials, some people reported a sore arm, fatigue, headaches,
nausea or fever after being vaccinated. These symptoms are not a sign of
infection; they are a byproduct of your immune system being activated.

The vaccines are authorized and recommended for adults who have not
been exposed to the virus and those who have recovered from COVID-19.
They’re not recommended for people fighting an active infection.
However, getting vaccinated won’t limit your treatments options if you
do get sick.

While the vaccines appear to be highly effective, they’re not 100%, so
it is critical to continue to wear masks and socially distance even after
vaccination. Every prevented infection closes another avenue of virus
spread, and that is how we beat COVID-19.

Paper Routes offers two unusual opportunities to enrich the
visitor experience: origami is of interest to educators because it
teaches geometry and paper-making is of statewide interest as an
industry as well as being a medium for making art.

The exhibition is underwritten by the Arkansas Committee of the
National Museum of Women in the Arts, thanks to grants and gifts
from champions of women’s art.
