A SHEERAVRITCfEor

FOR NEARLY a century, the American Heart Association has been a relentless force for a world filled with longer, healthier lives. And with
more than 150 offices nationwide, AHA is one of the largest advocacy platforms for heart health – providing education and public awareness to
generations of families. The annual Heart Ball is hosted by AHA chapters across the country and commemorates the organization’s continued
mission fulfillment work. As the Hot Springs Heart Ball celebrates nearly two decades of success, Brittney and Hunter Carrington will welcome
patrons to an evening that remains steadfast in its unwavering commitment to improving the cardiovascular health of all Arkansans.

A native Arkansan, Brittney’s education and career path - along with Hunter’s work as a physician - have landed them in cities around the state.
They moved to Hot Springs five years ago when Hunter joined Health Star Physicians and Brittney considers it “the best decision” for their family.
With a heart for service, she recognized the opportunity to volunteer in the Spa City as an ideal way “to become more involved in the community
and meet new people.” She adds, “It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the small town atmosphere with big city amenities… the adventure
never stops.”

Brittney’s natural charisma + charm helped her settle into Hot Springs and she has established a solid reputation for her civic leadership. A
former RN, she works at National Park Medical Center as Director of Growth & Outreach where the welfare of fellow Arkansans is paramount.
While also an active member of the Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs and the Garland County Circle of Friends, her finite focus is this year’s Heart
Ball. “Being in the healthcare industry and knowing that heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, it’s become a top
priority to help raise awareness and support prevention of the disease. The American Heart Association funds more cardiovascular research than
any other U.S. organization after the federal government, and events like the Heart Ball help generate more funds for more research.”

This year’s ball promises “fun and excitement” with an elegant cocktail hour and live entertainment. A highlight of the evening is the formal
presentation of the Sweethearts. Established by Kathryn and Paul Russell in memory of their daughter Caroline, the Sweetheart program offers a
unique opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors to participate in a comprehensive program designed to teach heart-healthy initiatives
and cultivate civic responsibility. “The education component of the American Heart Association’s mission is one of the organization’s greatest
contributions to heart disease prevention, which is 80 percent preventable. The Sweetheart program is an example of this education in action –
providing these young ladies with vital information to live a heart healthy life that they can share with friends and family.”

Thomas Blackmon and Bill Hartnedy

BLACKMONAUCTIONS
Photography by LORI SPARKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

IT IS difficult to attend a non-profit auction in Central Arkansas without seeing someone from Blackmon Auctions onstage working with the
crowd to get that extra dollar raised. Since the early 1980s, Blackmon Auctions has been doing auctions for charities around the state including
Arkansas Children’s Hospital, CARTI, Our House, the Rep, Easter Seals, Man of the Year, Catholic High School, Episcopal Collegiate, Ducks
Unlimited, and many more.

Tom Blackmon, one of the pioneers of the non-profit auction, lived by his motto that charging to do charity auction is counter-intuitive to helping
a charity. The Blackmon auctioneers have preserved his principle of giving back to the nonprofits in the community. Blackmon Auctions was created
with the belief that they should give back to those who devote their lives to giving, so they have and always will volunteer their time to these vital
organizations. Thomas Blackmon Jr. and Bill Hartnedy both feel that professional auctioneers are a rare find and knowing that they can use their
talents to help others is the most rewarding part of their work. Thomas says that God has blessed him and his family with a wonderful life and that
helping others is part of his responsibility as a Christian.

Each year, Thomas and Bill do around 25 non-profit auctions. With heavy work schedules and almost 100 real estate and equipment auctions a
year, time for non-profits has been tough to carve out. But, Blackmon Auctions has always found time to give back to the community and continue
the tradition that was started 40 years ago.

By ALEXIS NALLEY CHOCOLATE FANTASY BALL | Saturday, February 9| Statehouse Convention Center | rmhcarkansas.org

Photography by SARAH ODEN

RONALD MCDONALD House Charities of Arkansas
is one of the most notable nonprofit organizations in Little
Rock. What started as a six-room house in 1980 has grown
into a nonprofit that assists more than 1,100 families annually
through the Ronald McDonald House as well as the Ronald
McDonald Care Mobile. Inspired by the foundation’s mission,
Susan Miller joined the Board of Directors in 2006 and has
fulfilled many additional roles. From mentoring fellow patrons
and encouraging staff to her leadership roles, Susan’s heart is
invested in this “home-away-from-home” for Arkansas families.
For her unwavering commitment, Susan will be honored at this
year’s Chocolate Fantasy Ball.

Susan is a partner at BKD, LLP and currently serves on
the RMHCA Board of Directors as well as its Executive
Committee and Development Committee and is encouraged
by the strength of the families Ronald McDonald House
helps. “Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkansas’ focus
of providing a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families whose
children have been sent to Little Rock for life-saving medical
care inspires me to do more, give more, and serve more,” Susan
explains. “We have amazing donors, volunteers and staff who
work hard to help the organization fulfill its mission. I consider
myself very fortunate to have been involved for the last 12
years.”

The work of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of
Arkansas spans beyond the 32,000 square foot home adjacent to
Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Executive Director Janell Mason
elaborates, “We not only have the Ronald McDonald House
that keeps families close to their critically ill child at Arkansas
Children’s, Baptist Medical Center or UAMS, but we also have
the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a 40-ft mobile clinic that
provides free dental care and education to underserved children
in their own neighborhood.”

The Chocolate Fantasy Ball is the sweetest and most delicious
annual event in the Capital City. This “Eat Dessert First” gala
features more than 6,000 pieces of delectable treats, a live and
silent auction, a multi-course dinner and entertainment. “It’s
a fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day…a sweet evening with
your sweetie,” Janell jokes. Proceeds from the gala support
RMHCA operations and continued work throughout Central
Arkansas. “Susan’s dedication to our mission, and the families
we serve, is unparalleled. Every day we are inspired by her
leadership, strategic thinking, and focus on the success of our
organization. All of this, combined with her generous financial
support and more than a decade of involvement, make Susan
the ideal honoree for the 2019 Chocolate Fantasy Ball.”

It’s the remarkable resilience of the families that come to
the Ronald McDonald House that keeps Susan devoted to the
organization. “It warms my heart to help keep families together
in a time of need when it is so important to help in their child’s
healing process and favorably impact outcomes,” Susan explains.
“To be able to alleviate the worry of food, shelter and comfort
by providing the Ronald McDonald House means so much to
me.”
