AS THE most recent recipient of the

Barack Obama reminds us < again > that we
each possess the power of positive change.
It’s this kind of courage + tenacity that we
showcase in the pages of Inviting Arkansas
each month – hoping to inspire others to do
the same.

All civic leaders share the responsibility of
creating a just + more equitable world – some
are global and some are local, but ALL are
significant in contributions. North Little Rock
Mayor Joe Smith explains quite simply, “I live

something happen,” And that he does. His
family believes that investing in others is key
to building better communities. This vision
reflects the legacy of Arkansas Enterprises for

CELEBRATING tradition and hospitality, Southern Silks
brings the authentic charm of the Kentucky Derby to the Capital
City. Guests sip mint juleps and enjoy festive fare while watching
fabulous faux horse races. This year, Casey and Corey Kines will
welcome friends and patrons to an evening of Derby Day fun that
supports Methodist Family Health and its commitment to the
welfare of all Arkansans.

Casey works with One Digital Health & Benefits and was initially
introduced to Methodist Family Health through her business
relationship with the organization. “It quickly became personal for
me, after seeing the good work they do for children and families.”
Methodist Family Health Executive Director Carolyn McCone
notes, “Casey has worked diligently with our employees to decipher
insurance benefits for many years. She brings that same care and
attention to detail as the event chairman and we could not be
more grateful.”

For more than a century, Methodist Family Health has worked
tirelessly to improve the lives of children in Arkansas. Established
as an orphanage in 1899 by the state’s Methodist community,
Methodist Family Health continues to evolve to meet the needs of
families. The organization offers programs and services for families
and children struggling with behavioral, emotional and psychiatric
health issues. These resources are provided at residential treatment
centers and counseling clinics throughout the state as well as the
Kaleidoscope Grief Center – the only grief center for children and
families in Arkansas.

Proceeds from Southern Silks support the organization’s
continuum of care. Casey emphasizes the broad spectrum of
specialized initiatives available to Arkansas families. “I have many
friends who have used services and the board-certified psychologists
at Methodist Family Health for testing their children for learning
disorders like dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder. The early intervention made such a
positive impact on their children’s education.”

From the fashionistas to the sports enthusiasts, Casey boasts
there’s something for everyone at Southern Silks. “It’s our absolute
favorite event of the year. With the Derby-chic attire and fun
faux horse betting, we always reserve the first Saturday in May
for Southern Silks.” Each year, event colors are inspired by the
silks of the previous year’s Kentucky Derby winner. Prizes are
awarded for each horse race and there’s a competition for the most
extravagant hat as well as a lively auction. Casey adds, “My brother,
Matt Godbehere, is the auctioneer. Our grandfather started the
Godbehere Auction Company in Hot Springs in 1965 and I think he
would be so proud to see Matt in action helping local charities. It
really is a family affair for us!”

network. What began with foster parent classes with The
CALL evolved into the adoption of their son Jay.

The Radke family is no stranger to adoption. Their
journey began with the adoption of the now eldest son,
Stephan at just two years old. When he was five years
old and much to their surprise, they welcomed their
biological son, Noah. Their affections overflowed into a
desire to help older teens after hearing about Immerse
Arkansas. “We knew that the chances of teens getting
adopted were extremely slim,” Gina acknowledges.
“Before Immerse, they would mostly end up homeless
or if they were lucky they could go find some long lost
family, but those family members didn’t step up when
they were in foster care.” Passionate to eliminate this
stigma, the Radke’s began volunteering as mentors at
The Gathering. Gina explains, “The Gathering is the
Tuesday night dinner where the youth and mentors all
come together to eat and visit. This is where many of the
youth meet their mentors.” Through this program, Gina
and Wade met their son, Jay.

Immerse Arkansas offers support to youth as well
as adoptive and foster families to fill gaps in the child
welfare system. For many young adults, like Jay, aging
out of foster care at 18 years old homelessness is a pre-
conceived future. Through a portfolio of specialized
programs and services Immerse Arkansas provides
comprehensive mentoring, therapy and life skills training
that empower positive outcomes for individuals and
families.

With a house full of boys, including teenagers, Gina
admits they all enjoy some friendly rivalry. “We love to
compete with each other! Anything from board games to
sports.” Fierce in competition and family values, this team
of five is nothing short of an all-star lineup. Wade adds,
“We love to do lots of things together - play games and
lots of discussions. We love to talk. We just talk about
life, love, family, politics, racism, overcoming and just
making a difference in life.”

The Radkes believe every family can make a difference,
and they encourage others to get involved. Gina explains,
“The easiest way is to get a group together to prepare
a Tuesday meal for youth and mentors. We are always
looking for mentors and people to teach life skills classes
once a week.” These simple, but powerful gestures are
at the heart of the Immerse Arkansas services for youth
and familes providing hope and healing. “You can’t love
the trauma out of a child. But you will find ways that
they show love that will surprise you and bring you to
tears,” she adds. “Prepare for tougher times than you
could imagine and greater joy than you could imagine.”

Nestled on the edge of West Little Rock, this home offers serenity and
seclusion with the convenience of city amenities. Waldenwood Estates
boasts rolling hills and large lots – reminiscent of this family’s love of
all things Texas = big + beautiful - with an undeniable Southern hospitality that
beckons guests to stay for a while. The style and architecture are inspired by this
classic Texas philosophy – the bigger the better – where nature blends seamlessly
into the family’s lifestyle with the poolside outdoor living space that celebrates
the landscape.

WISHINWGELL

he Promenade at Chenal has spent
most of its ten-year presence in the
Natural State dedicated to supporting
local organizations. However, Make-
A-Wish Mid-South was chosen as
the shopping centers foremost
philanthropy in 2013.

Every year The Promenade at Chenal
hosts fundraisers in support of the local
Mid-South chapter with the goal of
granting wishes for Arkansas children.
In 2015, the shopping center named

T two fountains on the property in honor

of Make-A-Wish which lead to the “Make-A-Wish to Grant-A-Wish”
program utilizing the fountains as a means for donations. Customers
toss a coin in the fountains and make their own wish. Then, The
Promenade gathers the coins to assist with granting the wish of a
child. Guests to the shopping center can support a wonderful local
organization with the simple toss of a coin, and The Promenade is
able to provide these donations on behalf of the community. Within
that same year, The Promenade granted its first wish.

In 2018, with the launch of the its 10-year anniversary celebration
The Promenade set a goal to grant the wish of another child. The
shopping center hosted two fundraisers in addition to monthly
collection from the Make-A-Wish fountains, and on March 16, 2019
granted the wish of a sweet four-year-old boy named Augustine.

Augustine loves anything magical and The Promenade sent him
to the most magical place on earth, the Walt Disney World Resort!
On the day of his reveal Augustine thought he was headed to the
movies to see the latest movie release. But once he arrived at the
AMC Chenal 9 theatre, Promenade employees surprised Augustine
with Disney character balloons and gifts to let him know that his
wish had been granted!

The Promenade at Chenal would like to express its deepest
appreciation to customers for their continued support. So, the next
time you’re out walking the streets of The Promenade stop over to
one of the fountains, toss in a coin, and make your wish. Soon your
coin will be granting the wish of child right here in Arkansas.

Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses.
Doctors diagnose one child every 20 minutes with a critical illness.
Recent studies have shown that wishes provide long-term impact
through increased emotional and physical health, making children
more likely to overcome their conditions. Each year, Make-A-Wish
Mid-South grants wishes for more than 275 children locally. The
average cost of a wish is more than $8,000 and Make-A-Wish relies
solely on fundraisers, corporate support, and donations from the
public to transform lives one wish at a time.
