Calibrate the autofocus system
When shooting using the viewfinder, DSLR users sometimes
find that their camera is focusing a little in front of or behind
their intended target. This is because the camera doesn’t use the
imaging sensor for autofocusing and there’s a dedicated AF sensor.
Manufacturing tolerances can mean that the two sensors are slightly
out of alignment and if the lens’s AF system is also at the edge of its
tolerance, the focus can be affected.
Thankfully, most enthusiast and high-end DSLRs have a calibration
system that allows the focus response of the camera to be adjusted
to suit particular lenses. This is something that you can do at home
by shooting a subject with some depth, for example a shelf of books,
at 45° to the camera or a dedicated calibration target, and then
adjusting the camera’s settings before checking the results and
readjusting if necessary. Alternatively, an approved service agent can
usually calibrate the camera for you but you’ll have to send off both
the camera and the lens and be without them for a while.
Use the focus limiter
Many macro and telephoto lenses have a focus
limiter switch that can help you get your subject
sharp quickly by eliminating hunting. Sony’s FE 70-
200mm F2.8 GM OSS II, for example, has a switch that
enables the focus range to be limited to from 3m to
infinity instead of the whole range, which is useful if
you’re shooting through a crowd or foliage because it
stops the camera being distracted by the close objects.
Conversely, with the Sony FE 90 F2.8 Macro G OSS
focus can be limited to 0.5m to infinity or 0.28-0.5m.
The 0.28-0.5m setting is especially useful for macro
photography as it stops the lens from focusing on
objects in the distance and keeps the focus close.

Have you noticed that however long a lens

scale to your image that bit further away? It would be lovely to have
every focal length at your disposal but long
telephoto lenses are big, heavy and expensive.
Teleconverters, however, are much more modestly
priced, typically weigh 150-350g and they can
increase the focal length of your lens by 1.4x or 2x
depending upon which you select.
Unfortunately, not all lenses are compatible with
a teleconverter so it’s important to check before
you make the investment.
A downside to using a teleconverter is that the
maximum aperture of your lens is reduced. With a
1.4x teleconverter you’ll lose a stop and with a 2x
converter the maximum aperture drops by 2 stops.
This means that with 2x teleconverter a 70-
200mm f/2.8 lens, for example, becomes a
140-400mm f/5.6 lens while a 100-400mm
f/4.5-5.6 lens becomes a 200-800mm f/9-11
lens. This reduction in the maximum aperture can
have an impact on the camera’s AF system as
some or all of the AF points may not be sensitive
down to the new maximum aperture.
Get to grips with the
IS switches
Some lenses have a switch to let you change the
way that the stabilisation system works so it better
suits how you’re shooting. The Canon EF 100-
400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, for example, has
three modes. In Mode 1 the stabilisation corrects
pitch and yaw movements, like the original system
and it’s the best option for photographing
motionless subjects. Mode 2 is designed for use
when panning the camera as the lens only
compensates for movement that’s perpendicular
to the direction of panning. In Mode 3, the
stabilisation system only works when the shutter
button is fully pressed. This gives the lens the
greatest range of compensation at the point of
capture and it’s a good choice when you’re
shooting sport or action.

Technique TIPS FOR USING LENSES
Discover the AF stop button
Some lenses have an ‘AF stop’ button that can come
in handy occasionally in continuous autofocus mode.
For example, if you can see that someone is about to
walk between you and your subject, pressing the AF
stop button prevents the lens from refocusing on the
person so it stays with your intended subject.
Get some help with focusing manually
Most modern autofocus systems are very good but there are still times
when you need to focus manually and, thankfully, there’s some modern
technology that can help. Firstly, if you’re using a DSLR, switch to live view
mode because this gives you a larger image to work with. Whether you’re using
a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, there’s also usually an option to magnify the
area under the selected AF point so you have a clear view of the details when
you focus. In some cases, this can be set to activate as soon as the manual
focus ring is moved.
It’s also worth turning on the focusing peaking if your camera has it, as this
highlights the area of highest contrast – usually the sharpest part of the image.
You can see the coloured highlights move as you adjust the focus.
Most cameras with focus peaking allow you to set the colour of the peaking
highlights and it’s helpful to set a colour that stands out from your subject.
Use a lens hood
In dull, overcast conditions you can get away
without using a lens hood, but it’s generally
advisable to have a lens hood fitted (and the right way
around). A hood stops light passing over the front of
the front element of the lens and causing flare that can
cause a drop in contrast or even hotspots in images.
That light can come from the sun or a flash or other
artificial light and a hood stops it in its tracks.
Use a high peaking level to highlight more of the scene as you focus the lens
When focus peaking is active, you should see a highlighted band move as you focus Use the right shutter speed
54 If you’re handholding your camera, it’s vital that you use
a shutter speed that enables the subject to be
rendered sharp (unless you’re going for a blurred
effect). If your subject is moving, you can’t rely on the
lens or camera stabilisation system to freeze it, you
have to use a fast enough shutter speed. On page 57
I explain how you can find your safe handholdable
shutter speed with or without image stabilisation.

It’s especially To click or not to click?
important to
use a lens hood Some lenses with aperture rings have a control
that enables the ring to operate with or without
in bright clicks. The clicks are useful because they give you an
conditions indication of the fact that the ring has rotated,
with lots of reducing the chance of changing the aperture by
reflections accident, and you can also tell how far you’ve adjusted
the aperture as there’s a click for every 1/3 stop.
That’s great for photographers, but videographers
usually want any camera controls to operate as
smoothly and quietly as possible. So as a general rule,
click for photography and declick for video.

Create a macro lens
The easiest way to shoot macro photography is to use a
dedicated macro lens, but if you’re just dipping your toe in to
close-up photography, it’s an expensive option. Close-up lenses
which screw onto your lens like filters do, however, can enable
you to get much closer to your subject at a fraction of the cost.
If you want to take things a step further, consider an extension
tube that you can fit between your lens and the camera to
enable closer focusing. You can even use an extension tube
with a macro lens to get larger than life-size reproduction.
Before you invest, check that your lens is compatible with the
extension tube and, to keep life simple, go for a tube that
maintains the electrical contact between your camera and lens.

I mage stabilisation systems are designed to enable www.amateurphotographer.co.uk
you to handhold a camera at lower shutter speeds
than normal and get sharp results. Consequently,
they can bring greater freedom to travel light and
be creative with your camera. Some systems can even
enable sharp results at shutter speeds measured in whole
seconds, which means you can capture images of blurred
moving water while the motionless surroundings are
sharp. Even shutter speeds as fast as 1/15 or 1/8sec can
be enough to blur fast-moving water or crowds of people
– which is perfect in busy cities. It’s also very useful
when light levels fall as you don’t need to push up the
sensitivity (ISO) too far, so noise is kept in check.
In-body or lens-based
There are three types of image stabilisation: lens-based,
sensor-shifting (or in-camera) and digital. With
interchangeable-lens cameras, digital stabilisation is
usually reserved for video while lens- and camera-based
are used for stills. Stabilised lenses have an element or
group of elements that move to compensate for shake
and keep the image on the same part of the sensor while
the sensor is moved in-body-stabilisation.
Because of the larger range of movement, lens-based
stabilisation is usually better than in-camera stabilisation
with long telephoto lenses, but some cameras can now
work with both types of stabilisation in combination.
This means that the camera can use whichever system is
best for correcting a particular type of movement at any
focal length. For example, lens-based stabilisation is
useful for correcting tilting movements, especially with
long telephoto lenses, and sensor-based stabilisation is
better at correcting up-and-down, side-to-side, and
rotational movements.
Some lenses offer more than one stabilisation mode and
it’s well worth checking these out as they enable you to
tailor the system’s response to suit how you’re shooting.

St Ouen’s Bay AFTER
It is many years since I last visited
Jersey on a summer camping holiday.
On such a small island you are never
too far from the sea and this photo
captures the Jersey Atlantic Ocean
coastline beautifully. Josie Bough
writes, ‘The photograph was taken at
St Ouen’s Bay, Jersey, looking towards
La Rocco tower on a very cold
afternoon, late January. I loved the
light and moody weather on the empty
wet beach.’ This scene is all about the
drama of the lighting, where a shaft of
sunlight has picked out the defence
tower and surrounding sea. The
adjustments I made to this image have
emphasised the contrast in the
lighting. With the Basic panel tone
adjustments, I wanted to preserve the
dark mood in the clouds, while the
crop that I applied made the tower
more prominent and central to the
composition, drawing your eye in to the
centre of the frame.

cost well over £100 each. If you have lenses with a
range of threads, the cumulative price of purchasing
the most useful filters in every size you might need
adds up rapidly.
There are a couple of solutions to this. The first is
to use a square filter system, where you only need
one filter of each type. But these are bulky and slow
to use, while the filters are pricey and fragile. The
second is to buy a set of filters in the largest size you
need and use step-up rings to adapt them to smaller
threads. But this can be fiddly and time-consuming.
H&Y has come up with another option, in the
shape of the RevoRing adapter. This is a
variable-size step-up ring that will fit lenses with a
range of different filter threads. Five sizes are
available, each of which can potentially replace as
many as six step-up rings.
So how does it work? The lens attachment thread
is split across eight blades to give a variable size
opening, much like the aperture diaphragm in a lens.
Twisting the front part of the housing relative to the
rear causes the diameter to contract; release your
grasp and the diaphragm will spring open again,
gripping onto a lens tightly. H&Y recommends that you
allow the RevoRing to open in a controlled fashion and Five sizes Case
