It’s taken three goes, but Samsung has finally
submitted a Galaxy Fold for a review. Not a hands-
on session, not a briefing behind closed doors, but
a “here it is, do your worst” review. Having spent
some time with the flexible device, we can understand
Samsung’s confidence: this is a foldable phone built
to survive life in a pocket, and that’s not the only
thing we like about it. The form factor is genuinely
interesting and surely a sign of where phones are
heading. Samsung packs in the tech, too, from a

cutting-edge processor to all the screens you
could possibly want to gaze at. Whether
it’s worth the price is another
question. Read our in-depth
review on p46.

He’s also concerned about e-waste, pointing to the
behaviour of a well-known vacuum cleaner manufacturer
he worked with as a shocking example. “That company
wanted to protect its brand and its experience to such a
degree that it refuses to allow any of its products to be
refurbished,” he said. “All returned products, for any
reason… were crushed and sent to landfill.”

iPhones are also frustrating for refurbishers. As they
are locked to particular users, even after being reset, the
iPhones he receives are often only good for parts.

Unintended harms

Glynne is also sceptical of some aspects of the new law and
worries there could be unintended consequences. “We
buy white goods ourselves so now we’re responsible to
make sure those parts are available in the market for ten
years, and it’s really hard to do that,” he said, explaining
that Chinese manufacturers work on “spot buying”,
where components are bought from their suppliers in one
go, at one point in time. This means there’s no steady
supply chain to go back to for spare parts after the batch
of devices have already been made.

It’s fair to say the Windows 11
minimum hardware requirements
have caused something of a stir. We
might even go as far as brouhaha.

In addition to raising the bar quite
significantly when it came to the
processor your PC will require to run
Windows 11, Microsoft announced
that Windows 11 users would also be
required to use a TPM 2 chip,
something that millions of Windows
10 PCs and laptops won’t have.

The fury sparked by Microsoft’s
stringent set of requirements seems
to have spooked Redmond. Not only
did it take down and then adjust the
PC Health Check tool that it
recommended people use to check if
their PC was Windows 11 compatible,
Microsoft also swiftly lowered the bar
– for beta testers, at least.

The first official beta would only
install on systems that met the stated
minimum requirements, “with the
exception for TPM 2 and CPU family/
model” – the two requirements that
caused the most controversy in the
first place.

Microsoft says that “by providing
preview builds to the diverse systems
in our Windows Insider Program,
we will learn how Windows 11
performs across CPU models more
comprehensively, informing any
adjustments we should make to our
minimum system requirements in
the future”.

All of which means, at the time of
writing, that we can’t be 100% sure
what the minimum requirements for
Windows 11 will be because Microsoft
is dithering.

We may think of PCI Express as a
modern standard, but it was first
introduced way back in 2002. To put
into context just how long ago that
was, the cross-industry group that
developed it included Compaq and a
company that still went by the full

Dell, IBM, Intel and Microsoft.
The tech was originally called

I/O”. That reflects its role as a
successor to the venerable PCI bus
and its short-lived follow-up PCI-X.
But while the name emphasises its
heritage, PCI Express works in a
fundamentally different way to its
predecessors. Those older interfaces

The upshot is, almost any computer
