GREEK ISLANDS IN SPRING

Although not much bigger than Scotland,
Greece has been cleaved by the gods into scores
of islands, and it’s hard to know which to choose
– Corfu or Kos? Samos or Santorini? March, April
and May are wonderful months to visit as it starts
to heat up again (but is not yet packed with
tourists), and spring flowers make even the
prettiest islands look prettier. Plus, Easter, the
biggest celebration in the Greek Orthodox
calendar (on 24 April this year, and 16 April in
2023), is a great time to experience church
services, street parties and feasts. My advice is to
scoop up several islands on a one- or two-week
cruise. As well as unpacking only once, you’ll
generally sail between islands at night, so you
don’t miss out on the sunshine-dappled days.

Most cruise companies offer itineraries that
encompass a choice of islands, either in the
Aegean (some also including the coast of Turkey,
Cyprus and the Holy Land), or the Ionian (many
with Venice and other Italian ports, or those
in Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Albania,

TURKEY IN SUMMER

There’s only one place to be when it comes to
summer in the Med (when temperatures hover
around 35 degrees) and that’s relaxing on a beach.
Boasting nearly 1,000 miles of Mediterranean
coastline, it’s hardly surprising that Turkey has
become one of the most popular destinations for
beach lovers. Those attached to the big resorts
– Bodrum and Marmaris to the west, Alanya and
Antalya to the south – inevitably draw the biggest
crowds, but there are plenty more remote beaches
that have barely been developed. One of the best
ways to see them is on a traditional gulet – a
classic wooden sailing boat – whose skipper will
know the most enticing bays to drop anchor in.

One of my personal favourites is Patara, an
11-mile-long beach, backed by sand dunes and
a protected nesting site for loggerhead turtles.
Just inland, you’ll find a remarkable Roman
archaeological site with a massive amphitheatre,
triumphal arch and other ancient treasures.
Another gem, Kaputaş, a gorgeous cove of fine
sand, sheltered by headlands and fronting
turquoise waters, is within easy reach of the
attractive harbour town of Kalkan. Other
favourites are the lagoon at Ölüdeniz, Cleopatra’s
Beach in the Gulf of Gökova, whose sands were
supposedly imported from Egypt by Cleopatra
herself, and the long beach at Cirali. Operators
