T he E30 BMW M3 and beastly Cosworth-tuned versions of Ford Sierra and Mercedes-Benz 190E are just the tip of the touring-car ice‐
berg. They’re all magnificent proponents of arguably the most exciting on-track motorsport there is. But a touring car from Japan
came along, decimating them all … and was summarily banned for being too fast.
The Nissan Motorsport (NISMO) Skyline R32 GT-R is the winningest touring car of all time. In the Japanese Grand Touring Car Champi‐
onship (JGTC) and Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC), it won the most Group A races of any car. In fact, when it competed, it
won all but two races it entered. This rampant success created a groundswell of shock and awe that preceded the R32 GT-R wherever it
went. This was how the Skyline GT-R gained the nickname Godzilla, a mythical beast from the East.

When other countries adopted and began racing the Skyline in their domestic championships, the car was quickly banned for the
implicit advantage its all-wheel-drive and twin-turbo 2,6-litre engine gave it. Just 25 genuine Group A R32 Skylines were built. However,
there is a thriving recreation industry – mostly with this Calsonic livery – so much so that Nissan has started reproducing Skyline parts,
such is the demand for them today.

The spirit of this all-wheel-drive, turbocharged monster lives on in the modern-day R35 NISMO GT-R, which has enjoyed an evolution‐
ary programme to its development each year since it first launched in 2007. The term “motorsport pedigree” was coined for a car like the
Nissan GT-R.
