Despite the absence this year of the VW Type 2 Owners’ Club and

CURRENT THINKING
Jordan Hale’s 1979 Bay has an interesting life story. It has been in the UK
since 2013 but was originally one of just five of these microbuses which
were ordered from Volkswagen by the Electric Power Research Institute
(EPRI) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as part of a research
project in aid of making electric-powered vehicles more mainstream.
It was used as a demo vehicle at the time, and has spent most of its
life being tested around a circuit up until the 90’s, only covering 38,000
miles although the statistics on the electric unit they used to power these
were poor, with a range of just 62 miles and a top speed of only 35mph.
As cool as it looks, still with the original EPRI-TVA stripes and
signwriting, it has now been converted back to a 1600 petrol engine after
the electric motor seized, and has had a really nice original Early Bay
Westfalia interior fitted.
Jordan’s friends have been urging him to fit a Tesla electric motor, but
while the budget doesn’t stretch that far at the moment it could soon
change, with the ever-increasing cost of petrol!
