CLIMATE CHANGE
ANXIETY
From the moment our children are born,
we strive to protect them. But as climate
catastrophes grow more frequent, this goal
has become painful to contemplate. The
average child will live through roughly three
times as many climate disasters as their
grandparents did. Right now, almost every
child in the world is exposed to a major
climate or environmental hazard, and one in
three are exposed to four or more, according
to UNICEF. Spend even a moment pondering
this, and it’s hard not to sink into despair.
But there are reasons to keep the faith. Says
who, you ask? The people most intimately
familiar with the problem: climate scientists.
We asked six experts in the field—all of them
parents—how they stay hopeful.

Some Ways to Capture Their Interest
Play “bug detective.” Tallamy uses a
simple activity to reveal just how many
creatures live in a yard or a patch of
parkland: Take a plain white piece of
paper and a handheld magnifying glass
into the backyard. If you have a place
with leaf litter, clear it away and set the
paper on the cleared ground. If not, just
place it in the grass or in a garden bed.

A Flexible Feast
This meal is designed to be
kosher for Passover and
to satisfy guests with a range
of diets, including pescatarian,
dairy-free, and gluten-free.
If you’re serving these dishes
as part of a Passover seder,
keep in mind that there may be
certain ingredients Ashkenazi
Jews refrain from eating during
the holiday (kitniyot). In this
case, you can make a few
easy swaps, like using kosher
imitation mustard in the
salmon recipe, sliced celery
or green onions instead of
peas in the potato dish, and
kosher confectioners’ sugar
on the meringues.

M A K E I T A H E A D Shred and chop the veggies
and prepare the dressing, then toss and let sit at
room temperature for a few hours before serving.
(You can buy carrots preshredded—sold as
matchstick carrots—and shred or chop the
beets at least a day in advance.) This will keep,
fully dressed, in an airtight container in the
fridge for 1 day; because of the fresh herbs, it’s
best not to let it sit much longer.
