EDITOR’S LETTER JACKIE NICKERSON

The thing with real superstars, the ones that dazzle the red carpet as much as they light up the screen, is that they evoke one of two
responses: you’re either in complete awe of everything they stand for or you secretly wish you could befriend them, look through
the enigma and know everything because you’re attracted to them way beyond their appearances and on-screen roles.
Salma Hayek has been the latter for me all my life. (Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep are the others I’d put on this same
pedestal.) An actor, producer, director, activist and serial philanthropist, Hayek is that trailblazing force who, through her film
career, has fought ethnic typecasting and left fame in Mexico to make it on her own terms in Hollywood. Loud and commanding,
bold and irrepressible, you remember her as much as you remember her path-breaking roles: the lead with knitted eyebrows in
Frida, the one who stole the limelight from Antonio Banderas in Desperado and the actor who stood her ground against heavy-
weights like Will Smith, Matt Damon and Russell Crowe over the course of her filmography.
Off-script too she remains equally powerful. A fiercely feminine feminist and a crusader against violence against women, you

admire her for her life choices, her pro-feminist stance and the charities she’s worked with tirelessly. All this goes to show that she’s
not just a big-ticket actor but a cultural icon too, making it a huge personal coup to get her on the cover of Vogue India.

Simultaneously, I realise that our August issues have become seminal in their own way. In year one, we called it our ‘Beauty and
Age’ issue but transitioned quickly to our ‘Ageless’ issue as we realised that age is a non-existent concept in determining anything

about a woman. In this edition, we celebrate many such women who show us that measures like age are just an illusion. In our
Beauty section, there’s Kate Winslet, fresh off the success of Mare Of Easttown, talking about why she refuses to be photoshopped in
this age of filters. There’s also our gallery of women who make 50 seem fabulous. For our fashion pages, we commissioned photogra-
pher Avani Rai to capture her mother, the restoration architect Gurmeet Sangha Rai, in this season’s contemporary Indian labels. In
our Style section, we asked four designers to talk about their age-defying quartet of muses, while in Living, we asked yoga proponent
Mini Shastri to take us into her holistic life. Don’t miss our interview with Dr Jane Goodall, who, at 87, remains the hope for a better
future. These women and their stories are what Vogue India today stands for—they showcase the power of being real and limitless.
