RAJIV BAJAJ, A VERY DYNAMIC AND INFLUENTIAL MAN, HAS
been heading Bajaj Auto since 2005. Back in 1990, he started his career in the
company in the R&D department and, five years later, he moved to the

serving the company for 15 years, he was appointed as the Managing Director.
Over the years, Rajiv has established Bajaj Auto as a global two-wheeler player. The

adventure-tourer and now reports suggest that at the opposite end of the spectrum, KTM
will soon launch the 790 Adventure.
Focusing on the electric vehicle (EV) sector, the company is planning to restart the
delivery of the electric Chetak in September. In 2021, as the automotive market recovers,

the BS6 Leoncino 500. Giving cruiser lovers new options, Benelli also added the
Imperiale 400 to their line-up and now they have launched the 502C, a power cruiser.
The Benelli 302R is a faired sport bike that has arrived in showrooms in China and spy

Used,
Not Abused
A used motorcycle is not as bad as it sounds and, of course,
an abused one is a nightmare you should avoid.
Here is how you can make out the difference
Story: Joshua Varghese
Photography: Sanjay Raikar
A Yamaha YZF-R3 was one oF the options FoR the next
step in my journey as a motorcyclist. however, astronomical pricing (of the
brand-new one) kept it well out of my reach for longer than expected until
my mentor for all things mechanical, sheri Bhathena of motex Garage,
suggested that i go for a used one. it hit me like cold water on a sunday
morning. why had i not considered this? it made perfect sense and, after a
few bank transfers, i bought one of the R3s from his stable for a price that
was almost half of what it was worth when it was brand-new in 2016. taking
into account the fact that such phenomenal luck is hard to come by, we have
put together a manual of sorts to help you when you wander into the
uncharted territory of second-hand machinery.
when buying a used motorcycle, it is always best to seek the advice of an experienced professional. i
drew heavily on the expertise of editor aspi Bhathena to bring you this manuscript and right away we
arrive at the first bit of wisdom. if you intend to use the motorcycle regularly, then limit your search to the
ones that are registered in the same state. Buying a motorcycle registered in a different state entails a lot of
expenditure in the form of paperwork and what not. so, unless you are an affluent collector or are getting
the deal of the century or even inheriting an amazing piece of machinery, walk the other way.
as i mentioned earlier, buying from a reliable source is best. this includes motorcyclists who take
good care of their machines and honest mechanics or brokers. the next best thing is to browse through
the classified adverts and the vast expanse of the internet. of course, that does not always go according to
plan. i presume you have heard enough about the shortcomings of online shopping to agree with us
when we say, ‘inspecting, riding, and negotiating is better than clicking, waiting, and regretting’.

Improper paperwork attracts the Paperwork
long arm of the law and its hefty fines
This is probably the most neglected part of buying a used motorcycle. We are often so
www.bikeindia.in excited about landing a great deal that we forget the strings that often come attached
with it. Insurance is the easiest thing to sort out but things such as transfer of
ownership on the registration certificate is more complicated. Motorcycles that are
more than 15 years old attract additional costs such as green tax and pollution control
certificates. A no-objection certificate (NOC) is required if you intend to take the
motorcycle to a different state — an arduous and expensive process — which is why
we warned you against it at the outset of this article. Another piece of paper that is
absolutely essential is the hypothecation form from the bank to prove that the
motorcycle’s equated monthly instalments (EMI) have been paid and loan, if any, has
been repaid in full. It also helps to check if the motorcycle has any outstanding fines.
Finally, you need a lot of patience when you become the owner of a used
motorcycle. Regardless of how careful you are, it may throw a few tantrums during
the first couple of months of ownership but most issues can be solved easily with a
systematic and meticulous approach. Most importantly, wear good riding gear and
ride safe.
Of course, for more questions, you can always write to us or slide into our
DMs. Cheers.

rainfall and, as unfortunately anticipated, it was decided that the training and qualifiers
would take place on the short loop, which in effect reduced the track length to half.
Leading the tVS racing’s training programme were harry Sylvester, Jagan Kumar,
and the young K Y ahamed, who are among the best motorcycle racers the country
has seen. the training session was conducted during the first half of the day and it
comprised theoretical and practical aspects of racing. harry explained the theory to the
riders while Jagan and ahamed guided us on the track. it was a visual treat to see 15

reiterated time and again by the instructors was the importance of flags while on
the racetrack. Since flags are the only medium of communication between the racers
and the marshals (volunteer workers responsible for the safety of motor racing
competitors), we were instructed always to be alert about the nine racing flags that
convey different messages. the next most important learning was how to maintain
the “racing line”. the racing line is one of the fastest ways around the corner and we
were taught how to spot the entry, apex, and exit points. a perfectly executed line
allows the rider to carry speed through the corner and maximize drive at the exit.
once we had learnt the line, we were taught the ideal position racers should place
themselves in to ensure the most stability and clock the best time.
For every corner of the racetrack the coaches recommended a gear and we were
asked to tackle the corresponding curve in that fashion. this gave us a reference
point to understand the limits of the machine’s capabilities and our own potential;
significantly accelerating our learning. a race start is needed for you to pull to the
lead on the initial stretch. Knowing how to launch your race bike the moment the
lights go off is the key and it was individually explained to us by harry. We
accelerated down the main stretch only to be checked for our braking technique at
the end of it by Jagan. i was corrected for relying predominantly on only the front
brake. Jagan instructed me to give it another try, using a combination of engine
braking and the front brake to bring the motorcycle to a faster halt.
By lunch, a few hours spent in the racing suit made me admire the level of fitness
a race competitor should posses. the exhaustion and heat left no competitor in a
state to gobble a lot of food. after calming the immediate hunger and binge-drinking
a glucose-topped drink, the racers were called back to the track for a free practice
session. the qualifying rounds took place after both the batches of racers completed
their free practice. at that moment, i was too ecstatic to have experienced the whole
process of racing to bother about what the results would be.
the final segment of the day comprised photo sessions and distribution of
certificates of completion of Level 1 training, making all the participants of the
YMrP eligible to apply for the Federation of Motor Sports clubs of india’s
(FMSci) road racing licence. adding the cherry on top was the news that i had
qualified for the future races and thus would be returning to chennai from where
Bike India would also bring to you coverage of the inMrc races. Stay tuned.

Comebacks
Doohan, Dunlop, Hutchinson,

mental miseries suffered by some
of motorcycle racing’s greatest
comeback heroes are enough to give
you the heebie-jeebies
Report: Mat Oxley

Monster Energy, and Red Bull
If you are a professional motorcycle racer,
you will get hurt and most likely quite badly hurt. that is just the
way it is — even these days, it is a dangerous game.
indeed, the ability to bounce back from injury is every bit as
important as the ability to ride around corners fast, because as a
professional racer, you will not be able to do one without the other.
sometimes, however, riders do not so much bounce back from injury as
crawl back, grimacing through the pain and climbing on to the bike when
the rest of us would be climbing back into bed.
it is not only the hardware of their bodies, it is the software of their minds.
if riders allow any fear to creep into their psyche, then their days as
competitive racers are done.
the determination and pain threshold of these riders are beyond the
comprehension of ordinary people. many outsiders declare them to be mad.
and, perhaps, they are, but the alternative — not going racing — would
only make them madder.
