Charismatic & Courageous Central Region
1932
Greetings my sisters, and welcome to the 47th Central Regional Conference in the City of Wichita, Kansas.
Wichita is the home of Gordon Parks, photographer, musician, writer and film director; Dwight D.
Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States; Lynette Woodard, Olympic Gold medalist; and the list of
notable Americans from Wichita goes on, and on. As we gather to deliberate the business of the
Charismatic and Courageous Central Region, continue to learn the culture of Delta and the rich history
Wichita has to offer.
The National President's theme, "Uncompromising Commitment to Communities: Service, Leadership,
Empowerment” embodies a rich tradition of sisterhood and service. Those in attendance will have the
opportunity to participate in a community service project planned and implemented by the Wichita
Alumnae Chapter.
The theme for the Central Regional Conference will continue to be: “mobilize, cultivate and empower.” Our collegiates will have
Collegiate Day; we will have our traditional, Social Action Luncheon, Sisterhood luncheon and a Variety Show. The Past National
Presidents will address the assembly; and we will attend the Hostess Chapter’s Welcome Event and Ecumenical Service. Prepare
to spend time with chapter members and sorors from across the region. I challenge you to: 1) Learn something new. 2) Meet a
soror who is new to Delta and, 3) Meet a soror who has been in the sorority a long time (I will let you determine how long that is).
I would like to thank the Co-Coordinators from Wichita Alumnae and Zeta Beta Chapters for all the hard work that was done to
make this 47th Central Regional Conference become a reality. The Steering Committee did a fantastic job! They worked well
together, and it shows.
Finally, it is with mixed emotions that I write this, my last message as the Director of the Charismatic and Courageous Central
Region. My five years as Regional Director have been ones that I will always cherish. You have supported, taught and sometimes
carried me in this position. It takes a lot of time and work to be a Regional Director. It also takes a great Leadership Team. Thank
you, Central Region Leadership Team, for your hard work and dedication.
As I end this message, I would be remiss if I did not mention the Regional Representatives with whom I have had the pleasure to
know and work with during my administration: Sorors Alicia Payne, Fredrecka McGown and Taylor Ashley--Thank you for your
service and support. I went through membership intake as a collegiate many years ago, and, as I have worked with these Regional
Representatives, I am reminded what being a collegiate means. Thank you, my sisters, for reminding me that yes, it has been a long
time since I was a collegiate. I appreciate your excellent representation of the collegiates of the Charismatic and Courageous Central
Region.
Sorors let us continue the work of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and as the 14th National President, the Central Region's own
Frankie Muse Freemen, Esquire says, “We still have work to do.” Again, thank you for five years as Director of the Central Region.
Have a magnificent time during this 47th Central Regional Conference.
Sisterly,
Billie F. Coachman
Regional Director

Charismatic & Courageous Central Region
1932
To the Charismatic and Courageous Collegiates of the Central Region,
On Monday, January 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., I’m not sure if those illustrious 22
knew what a difference they were making or what an impact they would have on their community, our
world and each and every one of our lives. On the pillars of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service, our
founders created something bigger than themselves. As I’ve said before, hard work, strong will, diligence
and constant motivation of one another is what kept them going. I believe that that still holds true today,
in our committees, in our chapters, in our states, in our region, and in our sisterhood.
Though small in numbers, we are big in heart and spirit and we continue to carry on the legacy of those
who came before us. With sorors like our 14th Past National President, THE Frankie Muse Freeman, Esq. in
our midst, we truly stand on the shoulders of giants, as our immediate past Regional Representative,
Fredrecka McGlown would say. We, sorors of the C3, are charged with the civic duty to Mobilize, Cultivate
and Empower our communities and those around us. These past two years, we’ve done just that. Here in
Wichita, Kansas, we will handle the business of Delta in fellowship with one another. But we also come to
celebrate the accomplishments of our beloved region. From our dynamic programming and service
activities to the exemplary scholastic achievements of our collegiate sorors, I am so proud that the Central
Region continues to be the torch bearing, 9 pearl wearing, African violet totting, FINANCIAL CARD
CARRYING sorors that we were DeSTined to be. Sorors, Welcome to the 47th Regional Conference of the
greatest region of our awesome sorority.
Taylor S. Ashley
Regional Representative

A Message from the Regional Conference Coordinators
Greetings Charismatic & Courageous Sorors,
The Wichita Alumnae Chapter and Zeta Beta Chapter are honored to welcome each of you to the city of Wichita
during our 2016 Central Regional Conference.
Wichita, Kansas, the “bread basket” of America, birthplace of Pizza Hut and White Castle fast-food chains and
home of the WuShock, Dorothy, and Toto too, graciously welcomes you to the center of the country and the
historic center of the aircraft industry. Over 500,000 people call Wichita home and the Sorors in the city are
working diligently to roll out the “ruby red” slippers for you, your family and friends as you arrive by car, bus,
rail, and air!
On June 29, 2016, the “yellow brick” roads in the Central Region will lead to Wichita, Kansas. Once here, you
will see some of the most breathtaking views of skies over the Great Plains. You will also have opportunities
to experience the great history of Kansas through our various historical museums and cultural centers like The
Kansas African American Museum, The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, Wichita State University,
Wichita Museum of Art, and many more. Did you know that Kansas is also the home of Dwight D. Eisenhower
(34th President of the US) and Gordon Parks? And Wichita boasts the coveted title of the birthplace of Academy
Award winner Hattie McDaniel, first female member of the Harlem Globetrotters and Olympic Gold Medalist
Lynette Woodard, NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders and the list goes on!
Once we extend the Midwest welcoming hospitality and great fun, you will surely say, “There’s no place like
home for DST in the Heartland”. But, don’t take our word for it - join us in Wichita for the 2016 Central Regional
Conference. We will be united one with another to do the work of Delta, embrace our beloved sisterhood and
fellowship in “Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service”.
We can hardly wait to see you all!
Sisterly,
Terri Rice, Wichita Alumnae, Co-Coordinator
Dr. Delia Shropshire, Wichita Alumnae, Co-Coordinator

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BOOKING HOUSING FOR THE
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.
2016 REGIONAL CONFERENCE CYCLE
THE IMPORTANCE OF BOOKING YOUR ROOM THROUGH DELTA
Most Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Housing
I can find a lower rate on the Internet. Why should I book a room through Delta?
Negotiated hotels rates incorporate many benefits for you and Delta. Based on the number of rooms in Delta’s
block, the hotel provides complimentary or reduced rates for meeting room rental, staff accommodations, and
food and beverage. In addition, a percentage of sleeping room revenue is often rebated to Delta. The rebate is
used to cover audio/visual, electrical, and other meeting costs incurred at the hotel or convention center. If Delta
is unable to achieve its room block commitment because attendees are making reservations at other
hotels or canceling/shortening their length of stay at the hotel, the hotel charges Delta an attrition fee to make up
for its lost sleeping room revenue. An increase in attrition fees may lead to an increase in registration fees or other
expenses related to the convention. Anticipated sleeping room pickup is Delta’s strongest tool when
negotiating future sleeping room rates and meeting space.
What other benefits are there to reserving a room through Delta?
Delta and our official housing company will work on your behalf to help resolve any issues, if there is a dispute
with the hotel, or if you are dissatisfied with your accommodations. Shuttle Bus Transportation will be provided,
if needed, for all registered delegates who book a room, as well as any registered delegates that are listed as share-
withs, within the official room block at hotels that are not within walking distance. Registered guests, even those
who are Deltas, will NOT be provided Shuttle bus passes. Shuttle bus passes WILL NOT
BE SOLD PRIOR TO THE CONFERENCE OR ON-SITE.
When you factor in cab fares and travel time to an alternate hotel, you may discover the benefits are not as great
as you originally planned. Staying at an official hotel allows you to better network with your peers and remain in
the center of the activity surrounding the meeting. In addition, Delta hotel contracts include clauses that protect
our attendees in a variety of areas. For example, if the hotel is oversold and must relocate an attendee to
another hotel, the hotel must provide complimentary transportation to the alternate hotel and pay for one night
accommodations. This benefit is only extended to attendees at the “Official Convention Hotels.”

Why should I not use a debit card to book a hotel room?
Using a debit card to book a hotel can cost you dearly. It’s typically better to use a credit card rather than a debit
card when checking into a hotel. The hotel will place a hold on the money in your checking account to cover
the potential balance of your stay. The room rate, taxes and estimated incidentals ($50 per day) such as meals,
telephone calls, Internet charges and mini-bar fees will all be used to calculate the hold. Such holds can remain
for several days to more than a week after you check out and can cause your card to be declined or charged hefty
overdraft fees for purchases you thought you had money in your account to cover. Hotels also put holds on credit
cards, but unless you’re up against your credit limit that usually isn’t a problem.
What if I don’t have a credit card?
Don’t have a credit card to use? You’ll need to keep a high balance in your checking account to cover debit
card holds when traveling. Better yet, to safeguard the checking account where your bill payments and other
transactions are withdrawn, open a second checking account used only for debits.
