128 INSIDE ARCHERY JANUARY 2024 MARKET TRENDS GEAR REPORT M BY PATRICK MEITIN .30-06 OUTDOORS Crossbow Sighting Target WebXtra ■ For a closer look at this product and many others, check them out at insidearchery.com. ages while working within the confines of standard 20-yard ranges. In short, it makes sighting long-range optic or red dot scopes, or confirming crosshair ballistic marks, possible while shooting from just 20 yards. The Crossbow Sighting Target is compatible with crossbows pushing bolts from 280 to 500 fps. The target provides vertical yardage spots mathematically spaced to correlate to a crossbow/bolt’s specific speed and trajectory, including target strata for combinations shooting 280, 300, 320, 340, 360, 380, 400, 420, 440, 460, 480 and 500 fps—all while standing 20 yards away. Shooters start by zeroing a crossbow scope at 20 yards and determining actual bolt velocity through a chronograph. The target is secured to a safe and adequately spacious tarodern crossbows have become a thing of wonder, substantially higher draw weights combined with ever more clever cam, limb and rail-less systems delivering bolt speeds like nothing we’ve seen before. Who would ever have believed it possible to push a 325- to 400-grain crossbow bolt to 450 to 500 fps? This kind of velocity creates sure killing power at any ethical yardage, while also making it possible for shooters to challenge themselves with shots well past 100 yards during practice. Many companies have filled that need with crossbowtargeted optics allowing point-on aiming beyond 100-plus yards. Yet while it’s certainly feasible to hit targets with remarkable consistency at ranges of 70 to 120 yards with today’s high-performance crossbows, space becomes a very real challenge for many shooters while sighting in these advanced systems. For the urbanite or suburbanite restricted to an indoor range or fenced backyard, shooting beyond 20 or 30 yards while sighting in for longer shots becomes impossible. Until now. .30-06 Outdoors has introduced a solution to this dilemma via the Crossbow Sighting Target, which allows precisely dialing in those long-range yardget face, such as pro shop target wall. This then allows shooters to choose the vertical target string best correlating to measured velocity and sighting in or checking each substrata or turret setting by aiming at the 20-yard dot and noting impact on higher dots marked with longer yardages. For instance, the shooter can hold a 40-yard crosshair on the 20-yard spot, shoot and adjust until bolts reliably center the higher 40-yard mark. Steadying the crossbow on shooting sticks or a tripod helps create consistency. The system is especially handy when sighting turreted optics like those from Ravin or Huskemaw, allowing shooters to double-check a turret etched specifically for that setup, or mark a generic turret for various ranges. The .30-06 Outdoors system allows precisely sighting to 50-55 yards with a crossbow sending bolts at 280 fps, or up to 120-125 yards with a 500 fps crossbow model—all within the confines of a 20- yard range. This provides confidence and eliminates the possibility of lost bolts or safety hazards should a target be missed. The system is simple to use and entirely accurate. That has changed in recent years as manufacturers engineered steel-ferruled mechanical broadheads that are ever stronger and built to stand up to impacts with large bone without failure. Dead Ringer’s The Just Nasty 2.0 is such a head—every part of it from the ferrule to the .032-inch-thick blades made from 100 percent high-grade steel. The Just Nasty 2.0 includes an aerodynamic slim-profile ferrule, with everything from the fine trocar tip to the threads milled from one piece of carbon steel for strength and treated to a stainless finish to resist corrosion. The Just Nasty 2.0 is a no-nonsense two-blade swing-back mechanical design that includes a ¾-inch in-flight and initial cutting profile opening to a full 2 inches following deployment. The two stainless steel blades are retained in flight by a heavy-duty O-ring, which rolls back and over the arrow shaft during deployment so no energy is wasted breaking the retainment ring. The blades and O-ring system allows adjusting blade retention for lower-energy compounds or high-performance crossbows. Three spare O-rings are echanical broadheads no longer carry the stigma they once did—the doubts that once plagued the design regarding reliability, penetration and even if they would open every time. Some simply have difficulty accepting anything deviating from the status quo, but time has settled any qualms for the vast majority of bowhunters. Mechanical broadheads are favorites amongst legions of bowhunters these days. Once the reliability issue was proven on the white-tailed deer most of us hunt, broadhead manufactures began to beef up the design to calm any misgivings bowhunters might hold in relation to larger game such as elk. In all honprovided. The Just Nasty 2.0 includes a speed rating of 600 fps, while ensuring field-tip accuracy. The blade tips include three-step serration to grab hide upon impact and hasten deployment, and saw through tough tendons while passing through. The razor-sharp blades open to an aggressive sweeping angle to create devastating wound channels. The blades hinge on a carbon-steel set screw. Another handy feature is The Just Nasty 2.0’s brass weight collar, which allows setting up a 100- or 125-grain broadhead according to preferences, and with the same head. The sharp, three-edged leading tip and slim ferrule accentuate penetration, while the roll-down O-ring retention system expends minimal energy during deployment, making The Just Nasty 2.0 a highly efficient design. This guarantees ample penetration on game even when shooting lower-energy bow setups. Dead Ringer offers 14 different broadhead designs for any form of equipment or game, from traditional-style cut-on-contact to modern replaceableblade designs, to a number of modern two- and three-blade mechanical options. They also offer Tackdriver DT Sights in side-, Bridge-Lock and Picatinny mounting options, and Black Series Stabilizers. Have a look by visiting deadringerhunting.com. IA

Word of mouth spread until Parrish worked 20-hour days and generated a huge amount of business for the company. FS originated in 1996 with a sound foundation of how to build bowstrings and learned early why they are built as they are today. Parrish is often credited with several modern string technologies, including engineering the split yoke cable system, was part of establishing the AIM system and had a large hand in creating technology other manufacturers follow today. Parrish’s innovative history created the manufacturing process which sets FS well apart from competing string makers, along with proprietarily blending materials made exclusively by BCY. FS launches the Classic Series for 2024 to bring a nostalgia of bowstrings before the color craze took over in the early 1990s, meaning classic black or white as options. The Classic Series provides a high-performance product and the ‘clean, classic look’ using up-to-date irstString (FS) has been making top-quality bowstrings since 1996, quickly becoming one of the most respected names in the business. FirstString founder Scott Parrish started making bowstrings in 1983 at age 13 at Paul’s Archery. Owner, Paul McKinney is the father of Olympic archery medalist Rick McKinney, the world’s most decorated recurve archer. Scott did not work at Paul’s, but helped in the tech room and eagerly took guidance and direction from the forefathers of this sport. Parrish made strings for many of the world’s top archers including his close friend Jay Barrs, 1988 Olympic gold medalist, while both were competing and coached by archery legend Dick Tone, an inventor with several patents, including one for a spacecraft designed with Jim Easton, founder of Easton Technical Products. As a bow tech for the Outdoorsman in 1991, Parrish made bowstrings and modern materials promising zero peep rotation or creep and delivered ready to shoot without break-in. The Classic Series supplies a perfect combination of longevity, performance and are currently cataloged and ready to ship throughout numerous bow build options. FS builds strings for all compound and traditional bows, in addition to all crossbows, including models new and old. Parrish built bowstrings before manufacturer string prints were commonplace. He reverse-engineered bowstrings to build his own prints. All this information is available in FS’s database along with thousands of string prints. This deep knowledge allows Parrish to build the perfect string set for long discontinued bows, down to exact yolk length and loop dimension. FirstString offers multiple programs customized to fit any business model and promote dealer success. This includes stocking and stock-balancing programs, attractive retail packaging, plus tech counter packaging for spacesaving conservation. FS offers additional accessory items such as cable slides and loop material. 136 INSIDE ARCHERY JANUARY 2024 MARKET TRENDS BOW REPORT The new Obsession Two-Track XR Cam generates impressive arrow speeds combined with a pleasant draw cycle. Obsession’s 2024 X6 includes split limbs each measuring a 1/2-inch wide to offer stability and less cam torque. bsession Bows have long been known for providing impressive arrow speeds combined with pleasant carry weight. The big news at Obsession in 2024 is that Dennis Lewis is back at the helm and leading the company’s engineering and design team. Lewis was responsible for creating that early Obsession buzz and should help raise the compound-design bar for the New Year. Obsession is focused on regaining and reigniting its former dealer base with newly-refined, industry-leading designs. Lewis won Editor’s Choice Awards in 2014 and 2016 with Obsession’s Evolution platform, yet three new models being released for 2024 are promised to convincingly rival that level of design and performance. Attendees of the St. Louis ATA Show can look forward to seeing three new bows from Obsession for 2024—the Obsession X6, Obsession X7, and Obsession Mini X. Dealers will receive a sneak peek at the X6 and X7 before the big Show, but will have to wait until St. Louis to first view and handle the Mini X. All of the new models are made in the U.S. and include risers constructed from 100 percent U.S.-sourced 6061-grade aluminum. The X6 and X7 feature forged risers, a process providing extreme strength, accentuated by Obsession’s all-new “caged” riser design. The Mini X is an aggressive and short/compact axle-to-axle hunting bow sure to grab attention and headlines. The Obsession X6 is the topic of discussion here. The X6 and X7 share basic aspects, such as an 85 percent letoff, 31.5-inch axle-to-axle specs, and a feathery 4.8-pound weight. Both allow draw-length adjustments from 24 to 26.5 inches through SD (Short Draw) modules, and 26.5 to 31 inches via LD (Long Draw) mods, all in ½-inch increments. Where the major differences come in is the X6’s 6-inch brace height—verses the X7’s 7-inch brace— and the resulting 350 fps IBO arrow speeds of the X6—opposed to the 340 fps produced by the X7. Obsession fueled these impressive arrow speeds using their new TwoTrack XR Cam, which includes a rotating module and, as mentioned, two mod options for short and long draw lengths. This two-mod, fully-adjustable drive system allowed Obsession to maximize performance at every draw length, produce those impressive arrow speeds and introduce fantastic forgiveness to the design. This means that no matter if you are a petite woman shooting a SD model, or a burly man shooting a LD system, you will receive all the O BY PATRICK MEITIN performance these bows are capable of producing. The cams ride on sealed bearings for longevity and smooth draw cycles. Lewis calls this a fast cam that is also inherently shootable. The Two-Track XR Cam offers a relatively smooth draw cycle combined with impressive efficiency and energy generation. An adjustable limb-stop system provides a customized rear wall to a preferred feel, and about a 5 percent latitude on let-off rate. Each of the four ½-inch-wide, 12.25-inch long split limbs terminate in a past-parallel geometry that provides a smooth power transfer free of kick and vibrations on release. Top-quality bowstrings and buss cables complete the package, the bowstring including three sets of speed buttons to each end. The split limbs hold proven Axion limb silencers, a design including ball bearing weights suspended in rubber to aggressively absorb residual shot vibrations and help quiet every shot. Further hunting silence is provided through the fully-adjustable string stop (vertical and horizontal adjustments possible) set on carbon rods. The main support rod comes straight off the riser rear, an offset aluminum block setting the stop bumper well out of the flight path of passing arrows. The cable-slide support also includes an adjustable/ offset aluminum block, and carries a Teflon- and roller-equipped cable slide and blade vibration dampener. The system is super quiet and provides the fletching clearance needed, while also Obsession Bows X6

In all honesty, this is not a beginner’s bow (the X7 and its higher 7-inch brace height would be a better choice there), as the heavily reflexed riser, low brace height and high-performance cam will require an experienced touch and solid shooting form to eliminate cant and torque at full draw. That said, with solid shooting form the X6 offers all the accuracy required for serious 3-D or target shooting, or pin-point arrow placement while bowhunting. What the X6 certainly does provide is raw speed that tightens pin gaps and flattens trajectory to take some of the guesswork out of dynamic bowhunting situations, an easy-toting character when hiking rough mountains or stalking challenging game, and highly-maneuverable dimensions that help bowhunters get off clean shots in tight quarters, be that from the inside of a portable pop-up blind or while fighting thick brush. In Lewis’ words, the X6 offers a great cross between an Eastern and Western bow with its stable long-riser/ short-limb geometry, welcomed speed and a pleasant shooting demeanor. The heavily reflexed riser includes generous cutouts that help create the X6’s 4.8-pound mass, which not only provides easy toting, but lends the bow excellent balance. The grip is incorporated right into the riser and holds laminated wood side plates. The minimalist limb pockets further accentuate the X6’s feathery mass, while also ensuring pinned limbs remain precisely aligned and stable through a 5/16-inch stainless steel cross axle through the riser and limb pocket. PowerStop Targets have evolved with the industry, top-quality foam backstops a big part of their lineup, and refined to remain abreast of ever higher performance generated by modern compounds and especially high-energy crossbows. But that is not the subject here. I thought of those early straw bales because Power-Stop’s newest target is designed especially for youth archers. Power-Stop Archery Targets calls the My First Target the ultimate foam target designed expressly to enhance the archery experience for beginning archers. The My First Target measures 24-by-20-by-2 inches, providing a generous face for beginners and 2-inch thickness that proves compatible with bows including draw weights of up to 30 pounds. The foam target comes equipped with one target face, four target pins, and two metal stand stakes, these features and the target’s light weight allowing even smaller shooters to set f you’re of a certain age you no doubt grew up shooting arrows into baled straw purchased from the local farm and feed store. I find it remarkable today that a straw bale would not only stop, but convincingly stop the same arrows we took into the field for hunting big game. Eventually straw proved entirely lacking, as compound bow technology began to push arrows past the 250 fps mark and well beyond. For most of us that meant investing in a more expensive foam target, and for me that was Hips Targets, which after its purchase by American Excelsior became PowerStop Archery Targets. Power-Stop Archery Targets is a leading manufacturer of cuttingedge archery products, dedicated to delivering top-notch solutions for archers of all levels. With a commitment to innovation, quality and customer satisfaction, Power-Stop Archery Targets continues to redeit up without undue hassle. Dealers receive packages of eight target sets, and each unit is elegantly presented in an all-American POP display. My First Target is engineered to cater to the needs of budding archers, not only providing fast, user-friendly setup, but designed for easy arrow removal by weaker shooters. My First Target provides the quality PowerStop Targets provides in its professional-grade products, but caters to the unique needs of younger archers just beginning their journey. Archery, setting an arrow into its enchanting flight, is supposed to be fun and stimulating. The last thing we want to subject an aspiring archer to is frustration borne from struggling with an inferior target system or losing arrows because of a smaller target face. The My First Target makes shooting easy. It makes shooting fun. It makes young archers want to shoot more often. My First Target, like all PowerStop Targets, is made in the USA by American workers who take pride in producing a quality product. My First Target is in stock and ready to ship. 141 JANUARY 2024 INSIDEARCHERY.COM N ew names, new developments, and refined details make the newest batch of arrows and bolts hotticket items for the New Year. Arrows are the one ingredient that definitively ties a finished archery/ bowhunting package together. It is in the arrow where customers gain the most control over the functionality and ultimate performance goals expected from their completed outfit, be that indoor paper-spot shooting, spring and summer 3-D courses, or bowhunting game large and small, far or close. At one extreme, for instance, bowhunters can choose between a lightweight and faster arrow best suited to long-range prairie hunts for pronghorn and deer to flatten trajectories and tighten pin gaps when anticipating longer-than-average shots. At the other end of the spectrum bowhunters can choose a heavier arrow that maximizes penetration and reliability around bone on sturdier big game animals such as elk, moose, brown bears or African Cape buffalo. Or, like so many average modern bowhunters, customers might opt for a middleground shaft that serves adequately as a do-it-all option for multi-season and multi-quarry pursuits. The target shooter has the option of skinny, wind-bucking shafts for outdoor FITA or 3-D tournaments, or a fatter line-crowder to cut lines and boost indoor paper target scores. Crossbow shooters have fewer options in this regard, but it is safe to say that the newest crop of crossbow bolts are stronger and safer than ever, while wringing every ounce of hard-hitting energy from today’s ultra-high-performance models. And while I understand many companies prefer to label crossbolts arrows, it is my practice to use the traditional terms of arrows for vertical bows and bolts for crossbows, hoping to avoid confusion and definitively mark what they are to be used for at a glance. Arrow technology, more precisely carbon arrow technology, has advanced at a blistering pace in the past decade. Higher grade materials and more advanced manufacturing processes have created arrows that are much straighter, offer more consistent spine and matched weight, and that prove stronger and more resistant to splintering on impact with BY PATRICK MEITIN
