4 | inside firearms | spring 2026inside the industry | first roundSpringtime! After the slow late-winter periods, finishing tedious annual inventorying and with the big sports shows in the rear-view, the warming days of springtime prompts customers to get outside, and to return to your shop in droves looking for merchandise to fuel their shooting passions. As a guy who picks up every piece of fired brass he encounters, even for cartridges I have no use for, I can tell you the pickings increase dramatically after the arrival of warm weather. Warm days lead to more burnt ammo, even if the targets are simply cans and dirt clods. Common ammunition options such as 9mm Luger, 223 Remington and 22 Long Rifle should now be flying off of store shelves. You can further fuel the shooting fun by offering products like more engaging targets, magazine speed loaders and tubs of Tannerite or other reactive targets. Realistic targets make for more engaging and practical shooting sessions, while also increasing the fun quotient. For those who feel uncomfortable targeting realistic human targets (even if they’re obviously depicted as bad guys) there are always zombie targets to make it all more politically correct…Reactive targets are always big sellers. I can’t tell you how many pounds of Tannerite I sold while working outdoor retail, but I can tell you I had customers who showed up every Friday to stock up for the weekend. Reactive spinner, flapper, plate rack, dueling tree, spring, fall-down and popper steel targets are always wildly popular and something a lot of shooters are willing to invest in. Of course, spring means turkey seasons in many regions—with many states well under way as we speak. A good selection of turkey-targeted shotshells, turkey vests, decoys, calls and pop-up blinds are always worthwhile inventory investments in areas with a strong turkey-hunting tradition. The meteoric interest in varmint shooting is also something to keep in mind as spring arrives. The expansion of the coyote’s range into Eastern states means there aren’t as many groundhogs as there once was, but that doesn’t mean interest has waned with some die-hard varminteers. Western regions are more likely to harbor a durable varmint-shooting tradition due to more available species like ground squirrels, prairie dogs and marmots (rockchucks), plus scads of public lands on which to enjoy it.Obviously varmint ammo in everything from the 17 HMR and the diminutive Hornets to the lighter 6mm cartridges will appeal to these dedicated customers, but don’t forget to include a solid selection of reloading components for those who take varmint shooting to extremes and shoot in volume. Stocking a healthy supply of reloading powders, primers and component bullets can make you the go-to gun shop with serious shooters. A selection of bipods, portable shooting benches and shooting cradles and prone shooting mats should also speak to your springtime varmint shooters.Spring brings increased shop traffic and a welcome uptick in much-needed firstquarter sales. Taking advantage of this means stocking shooting items that fuel the passion and increase customers’ enjoyment.Inside Firearmsis a publication ofApollo Creative IncPrinted in the USA.PublisherApollo Creative IncOwners • Stephen Mack | Patrick Meitin | Ed RotherExecutive EditorPatrick Meitin • [email protected] EditorMichaelean Pike • [email protected] EditorStephen Mack • [email protected] Melloni • Michaelean Pike • Kat StevensSales & MarketingStephen [email protected] • 719.495.9999, ext. 1Design & ProductionER Graphics / Ed Rother • [email protected] Media ManagerJason AsheVideo EditorMarc BalistreriAccount Manager Pam Ludlam • [email protected] Services & Change of Address:Inside Firearms Circulation Department Inside Firearms, PO Box 986, Levittown, PA 19055-9998 Phone: 844.862.9286 • Fax: [email protected] OfficeInside Firearms / Apollo Creative IncP.O. 6 | inside firearms | spring 2026“We have to be able to hold our head up high when we walk through a trade show or travel anywhere in the country,” he said. “If you mention the name Henry, there’s positivity associated with it. That is success that has nothing to do with financial success. It’s the success that you’re happy with our product. We treated you right. That’s the most important thing to me. Do I want financial success to come along with it? Yes. But what’s first and foremost in my mind is respect for the brand.”By that measure (and by many other measures), Imperato and Henry Repeating Arms are incredibly successful. Thanks to Imperato’s vision, Henry has proven that a company can stay true to its values while also making a profit. Those values include a commitment to manufacturing in America, delivering a personalized customer service experience, giving back to important causes and producing firearms that both appeal to a modern audience and would still make the inventor of the original Henry rifle proud. That’s a lot to ask of any company. But thanks to Imperato’s steady leadership and long-term thinking, Henry has thrived for nearly 30 years.A Legendary NameBenjamin Tyler Henry patented the first repeating rifle in 1860.“It was a lever action, and it was funded by Oliver Winchester,” Imperato explained. “They set up a company in Connecticut, and they began making rifles. It was called the Henry rifle. They built guns through the Civil War.”The Henry rifle quickly made a name for itself among soldiers and civilians alike. One Confederate soldier, after a skirmish with the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, many of whom were armed with Henry rifles, remarked, “It’s a rifle that you could load on Sunday and shoot all week long.”“The lever action rifle was America’s rifle,” Imperato explained. “The lever BY MICHAELEAN PIKEOften when we ask interviewees about the secrets to their success, we’ll get answers about product innovation, quality, service, never giving up—all excellent answers. 8 | inside firearms | spring 2026action itself is a uniquely American design. Most firearms designs that we know, whether it’s the bolt action rifle or even the revolver, came out of Europe. But the lever action is truly an American design. For decades, the lever action was the go-to, from the Wild West all the way into the mid-1980s or so when we had the advent of the AR15. Today the world thinks of the AR-15 as America’s rifle, but we had 12 decades of the lever action rifle.”Benjamin Tyler Henry may have played a huge role in the invention and distribution of the lever action rifle, but after a falling out with Winchester, he left the company and, as Imperato put it, “faded into obscurity.” The rifles were rebranded under the Winchester name, and Henry was destined to be all but forgotten.Until, that is, Imperato came along.Gaining ExperienceImperato attended New York University, though he ultimately never finished his degree. Instead, he began working at his father’s store—which sold guns and police equipment—at the age of 19.“I worked in the retail department,” he said. “I worked in the wholesale police equipment department. I was involved in import, export, surplus products like ammunition, etc. I wore literally every single cap in the firearms business. So I understand where the distributors’ challenges are. I understand what the retailers’ challenges are. That was my baptism in the firearms business.”The store, called the John Jovino Company, opened in 1911, in the Little Italy district of downtown Manhattan. Its location proved to be an important influence on Imperato in his youth.“John Jovino Company was on the back street of what was the old New York City police headquarters, so I really got an inside view of law enforcement,” he said. “That’s where my strong support for law enforcement comes from. That’s still in our blood. It will always be part of Henry’s DNA. We will always be right there supporting law enforcement and first responders.”Eventually, the New York City police department opened their own equipment bureau, and business at John Jovino Company began to decline. With three young children to support at home, Imperato decided to try something new.“I took out a home equity loan in the early 1990s, and I started a company called Colt Black Powder Arms,” he said. “I had a license from Colt to build Civil Clockwise from inset imageon opposite page :■ Benjamin Tyler Henry, inventor of the Henry Rifle.■ The original Henry factory in New Haven, CT.■ The 7th Illinois Infantry Regiment, circa 1862.■ John Jovino Company facade in the 1950s.■ Group photo at John Jovino Company.■ Inside Colt Black Powder Arms in 1995.■ Exterior of the Henry Repeating Arms headquarters in Rice Lake, WI.■ Anthony Imperato, founder and CEO of Henry Repeating Arms.

I started in a 7,000-square-foot garage in Brooklyn, New York, and slowly built up that business.”Colt Black Powder Arms turned out to be a step along the way.“I was able to use that business to fund the start of what became Henry Repeating Arms,” Imperato said. “We shipped our first guns in March of 1997.”We asked Imperato what made him choose the Henry name, which he got the rights to use.“I chose the Henry name because I entered the market with a lever action rimfire rifle, and Henry was associated with lever actions,” he said. “I also chose the name because it had historical legendary significance and was not being recognized at that point. Hopefully, Benjamin Tyler Henry is smiling down upon us and we’ve done him proud.”The Early Years of HenryImperato’s new company revitalized the lever action market.“It was near extinction when I started the company,” he said. But that also meant the fledging company faced stiff headwinds.“Lever actions had taken a beating at that point and were in severe decline,” he explained. “So initially, it was not easy to convince the distribution system to get on board. They all thought, ‘Do we need a lever action?’ Winchester was still lingering. Marlin was still around. And I had some pushback from people in the wholesale distribution lane.“But the company was built one grain of sand at a time. One day at a time. That was the philosophy. One call at a time, one email at a time—give it all our best. This was not a get-rich-quick scheme. We were in for the long haul. So, yes, we had to overcome some initial noninterest. Many of the people who were initially resistant are some of our biggest customers today.”Part of what helped the company succeed was the price point of its products.“The product was well received because it was a value price point,” Imperato said. “Our lever actions are the smoothest in the industry, hands down. People started picking them up in gun shops and going, ‘Wow. That’s nice. That’s sweet.’ When someone picks up a gun and you hear them say, ‘That’s sweet,’ you know what they mean. It just feels right to them. We had that.”

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 11Harkening back to a more traditional aesthetic also helped set Henry’s early rifles apart.“We made the wood a significant part of the aesthetic of our gun, using really nice American walnut in various grades,” Imperato said. “Over the years, people have realized while there’s been a big push on synthetic stock guns and MSRs, people come back to heritage and the wood. They’ll say, ‘Wow, that really is beautiful.’ That had a lot to do with getting the gun off the ground, too.”Made in America or Not At AllOne of Henry’s core tenets from the very beginning has been manufacturing in the United States. “I could see where certain products can be made offshore,” Imperato said. “Sneakers, apparel, things like that. But there’s so much about America that’s tied to firearms. Unfortunately, there’s too much written about the negatives, but I know all about the positives. And there’s pride in just looking at the roll mark on the barrel where it says made in the USA. It’s one lane in U.S. manufacturing that we should never let go of. It’s critical that we continue making our own firearms, making our own ammunition, let alone our own drugs and a lot of the other important things so we’re not beholden to somebody who could one day be our enemy.”Originally, Imperato summed up the company’s stance on American-made products with the slogan “Made in America and Priced Right.”“We entered the firearms business with a real value proposition—which is still a value proposition today—our basic H001—our 22 (LR)—that’s sold everywhere around the country,” he said. “It’s still one of the best sellers in the industry and one of the best values in the industry. But our original motto was ‘Made in America and Priced Right.’”About five years later, Imperato made his stance on American manufacturing even more clear by changing the motto to “Made in America or Not at All.”“That has really resonated with the American consumer,” he said. “We were all about ‘Made in the USA’ well in advance of what you see these days. Now there’s a lot of ‘Proudly Made in America.’ We were ahead of that curve.”Over the years, Henry has remained committed to manufacturing in America. We asked Imperato if that’s been a challenge.“No,” he said. “Manufacturing challenges are just typical manufacturing challenges, whether we were making guns or we were making any other kind of complicated product where you’re cutting a lot of metal and there’s tolerances and safety issues and things you have to control. The firearms industry is not for the faint of heart. I’ve used this analogy before—it’s like buying a ticket to a roller coaster. You’re going to have your up periods, you’re going to have your down periods and you’re going to have your in-between periods. A lot of that is fueled by political winds one way or the other. So if you know you’re going to get nauseous on the ride, don’t buy the ticket.”Modern Products with Deep RootsSince launching the company, Imperato has found a way to balance staying true to Henry’s roots while also delivering products that meet the needs of today’s shooters.“We look at it this way—let’s remember what brought us to the dance,” he said. “That’s the Henry heritage. At the same time, we realize there’s also a younger audience who looks at things differently. We call that Henry Today. So we have the Henry Heritage lane and we have the Henry Today lane, and they meet somewhere in the middle. That’s where our modern lever actions

12 | inside firearms | spring 2026more than a lever action company at this point. And we’ve been adding more options recently. The consumer will see that. We will continue to deliver non-lever action firearms platforms as we move forward.”Personalized ServiceWhen we asked Imperato what sets Henry apart from the competition, he immediately brought up the company’s customer service.“We are a privately owned company that’s going to have relationships that are very different than the big boys that are public companies,” he explained. “We all make quality products. And all of my competitors are friends of mine. But no one can do what we do on a personal level. We connect with the consumer and the industry in a much different way than most others can in the industry. We’re very much a touchy-feely human entity. We set the customer service level not only for our industry, but our extraordinary that have been really successfully received come into play. We never forget who we are, but we know we have to innovate and talk to a newer, younger audience.”Notable firearms from Henry include the entry-level H001 and the Golden Boy rimfire line.“Those are our two best sellers,” Imperato said. “As far as the best seller in our centerfire line, that’s been changing. It used to be our Classic Big Boy, but then it switched over to more of our modern options—our X Models, for example. So we have a strong presence in the rimfire lever-action market and a significant presence in the centerfire lever-action market.”Although the company got its start with lever actions, it also offers a number of other firearms.“We’re also now making other guns, like the Homesteader semi-auto 9mm carbine,” Imperato said. “We make revolvers. We make single-shot shotguns and single-shot rifles. In the early 2000s, we came out with the Henry U.S. Survival Rifle, the takedown 22—all of the components fit in the stock. We filtered things in over the years. We added a youth gun, the Henry Mini Bolt, which is a stainless-steel synthetic stock bolt action for beginners. We’re

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 15customer service would be a top rung within any industry. But we set the bar in the firearms industry.” When Imperato talks about handson customer service, he speaks from experience.“I’ve answered the phones for 20 years,” he said. “I’ve answered emails personally. We ran infomercials on TV on weekends where I was giving out my email address and talking to people. We still have that. If you call Henry, you get a live operator 24/7, 365 days a year.”As the company has grown and Imperato’s employees have taken over much of the day-to-day operations, everyone at Henry is committed to providing that same top-notch level of service.“If someone gets a phone call or an email that says Anthony would not have handled it that way, they know they need to fix it instantly,” he said. “Everyone at Henry is empowered to do whatever it takes to make sure the consumers and the dealers are not only satisfied, but we’ve exceeded their expectations.”That’s especially true in the rare instances where a Henry customer is unhappy about something.“I look at those situations as an opportunity, not a negative,” Imperato said. “Why? Because after we’ve handled the situation, they’re not only going to be happy, they’re now going to be ambassadors for Henry. We’re going to blow them away with what we’ve done for them. That’s how Henry rolls. No one can do what we do in that regard. It’s painful but rewarding work. You start with a customer service situation where the customer is very angry for whatever reason. Thank God we don’t have many of those, but it happens. Our customer service team doesn’t have to come to me to ask for permission to solve the problem. I don’t second-guess their decisions. They resolve the issue. I don’t care what it takes to make our customers happy. I tell my people, ‘If you have to do their laundry, go do their laundry.’”And although the company sells through distributors and not dealer direct, Imperato stresses that Henry wants its dealers to contact them with any problems at all.“We have three or four people on our staff that are basically dealer liaisons,” he said. “We don’t sell dealer direct, but we remain in very close contact with the dealers. If a dealer has an issue, we want them calling us so we can resolve it quickly. We don’t want them calling the distributor to try and resolve something. That’s going to take more time, and we want to hear about any problems immediately. And it’s not only if

16 | inside firearms | spring 2026there’s a service issue. It could just be that they can’t find a product. We want to help them not lose the sale, whatever the case may be. Even though we don’t sell dealer direct, we react like we sell dealer direct.”In addition to the level of personalized service Henry offers, the company has a robust lifetime warranty.“Our lifetime warranty is really quite unusual,” Imperato explained. “We have guns that might have been purchased 23 years ago, and they come back and we don’t charge the customer a penny. Zero. If we’ve charged five people in the life of the company for service, it’s a lot. It’s really extraordinary today. If you bought a car today and drove it around the block and then had to bring it in for service, they’re going to charge you. Here, we make a firearm, and even if it’s been used like crazy for 20-something years, we fix it for free.”The company’s exceptional customer service plays a major role in its marketing strategy.“We don’t have one person in the company that has the word ‘sales’ in their title,” Imperato said. “We don’t feel like we’re selling, and that’s how we approach our marketing. We simply present the product to you, and we make a promise to you that if you take out your credit card and spend your hard-earned money on a Henry, you’re going to be 100 percent satisfied. So our marketing strategy is really presenting Henry and letting the customer see that we make a quality product. Some of our products are for fun. Some of our products are for resolving problems, like for pest control on a farm or on a cattle ranch. That’s really what we do.”Guns For Great CausesFor more than 20 years, Henry has made a point of giving back through its

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 17Guns for Great Causes program.“The Guns for Great Causes program is the charitable arm of Henry Repeating Arms,” Imperato said. “I started it in 2003. I had this epiphany. The company had its feet on the ground. We were going to make it. And I felt that I had to give back. We started with the Ronald McDonald House, taking sick children from all around the world on these local shoots, raising money, donating guns to raise money. That’s where it started, with pediatric cancer as the primary focus of Henry’s Guns for Great Causes.“We’ve made outright significant cash donations to children’s hospitals. But we also help with individual cases around the country where the child has to be transported for treatment. It often costs the family a lot of money to go from home to the hospital. We’ve been doing that for over 20 years at this point.”We asked Imperato why he focused his philanthropic efforts on pediatric cancer.“I’m a father of three with five grandchildren, and it just struck me that it has to be the most painful thing,” he said. “When I was around children and families that were suffering with that, if you’re human, all you can think is, ‘Please, God, help this family get through this.’”The Guns for Great Causes is also another way for Imperato and Henry to show its deep respect for law enforcement, first responders and our military.“The second part of our Guns for Great Cause is helping families of law enforcement, first responders and military who’ve lost a loved one in the line of duty. That’s been a major focus of the program. Then we also donate to support wildlife conservation, the Second Amendment and firearm safety.”

18 | inside firearms | spring 2026The Future of HenryImperato started Colt Black Powder Arms with seven employees in a 7,000-square-foot garage. Today, Henry employs approximately 700 people between its 140,000-square-foot headquarters and roughly 400,000-squarefoot manufacturing space, all located in the northwest corner of Wisconsin. Imperato noted that Henry benefitted from a number of outstanding employees.“Andy Wickstrom is our company president,” he said. “He’s been with us for almost 20 years at this point. George Thompson is our director of product. He worked for Benelli for about 15 years and joined us a couple of years ago. Dan Clayton-Luce is our vice president of communications. Nick Chappell is the vice president of engineering, and Lucas Stanton is the director of production.”And Henry has no plans to slow down any time soon.“We have some things that we have not announced yet,” he said. “We go by the rule that only when it’s in a box and we have enough on the shelf to launch it do we let the cat out of the bag. So I’m excited about some new things coming out. I’m also excited about what our Special Products Division (SPD) did. The Henry Special Products Division is really high quality, and all about meeting customer needs. Anything that falls under that banner has been doing very well and hopefully will continue to do very well.”If you’d like to stay abreast of what Henry is doing, you can sign up to receive the company’s free catalog.“People can sign up for our free catalog, which comes with a list of dealers in your area,” he said. “You get a couple of nice decals. You also get an industry newsletter called the Henry Repeater.

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 19You just have to go to our website, henryusa.com, to get on the list to be notified when we launch new products so you’ll know what’s new.”As we were finishing up with the interview, we asked Imperato what he most wanted our readers to know about the company. To no one’s surprise, his answer was to supply us with his personal email address.“Readers should know that they can reach us,” he stressed. “They can email me personally—[email protected]. If they have questions for us, they can just fire away.”

20 | inside firearms | spring 2026market trends | rifle reportAchassis rifle as at home in the field as on the range. Tikka—now a subsidiary of SAKO of Finland and part of the greater Beretta Holding Group—enjoys a 125-year-old firearms history.Tikka has developed a well-deserved reputation for producing best-in-class rifles popular with discerning shooters. I’ve sold my share of Tikkas back in my outdoor retailing days, but it had been awhile since I’d heard any big news from Tikka. That news arrived in 2025 with the arrival of the Ace rifle lineup, including further refinements to T1x rimfire (in 22 LR and 17 HMR) and three T3x centerfire models. The T3x Ace Game under discussion here is the hunting model of this hot new Tikka series—though it offers accuracy enough for serious competition. The T3x Ace Game can be ordered in 223 Remington, 22-250 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm PRC, 308 Winchester and 300 Winchester Magnum chamberings. A 6.5 Creedmoor was received for testing. The Ace lineup are precision chassis rifles created to serve shooters seeking an affordable competition rifle for Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Production Class or National Rifle League Hunter and Factory classes. All Ace models include the same chassis system, which includes both M-LOK and Arca-Swiss RRS attachment points on the forearm to attach bipods or drop into stand-up tripod systems. The chassis is also designed to accept many Tikka stock accessories. This chassis is a highly ergonomic and adaptable modular design with length-ofpull spacer adjustments, rubber recoil pad positioning and adjustable comb height. The skeletonized stock can be set up with additional weights to increase stability or manipulate balance. The butt sports an M-LOK-attached polymer bag hook and the front of the forearm a polymer barrier-stop cap. A barrier stop is also milled into the forward edge of the magazine well. The chassis holds angle-adjustable vertical pistol grips to create ideal trigger reach, and a thumb peg that can be quickly moved to the right or left side of the grip to provide maximum rifle control. Single-point QD sockets are located on the left and right flats. The action and barrel include a tough, protective black Cerakote finish, offering a superior alternative to bluing. The chassis includes a Midnight Bronze finish, with all modular parts black. The test rifle included a molded polymer, six-round detachable magazine identical to those supplied with T3 rifles. The modular mag-well opens the possibility of other magazine models/brands, including 10-round steel mags. The large, ambidextrous mag release mechanism is integrated into the trigger guard for quicker magazine exchanges. The two position safety includes a knurled T-head lever and locks the bolt when engaged/pulled rearward. The rear cocking indicator tab includes a red dot to show when the firing pin spring is cocked. The T3x Ace Game barrel measures .74-inch just behind the muzzle threads, making it lighter, better balanced and better suited to hunting than the Ace Target. Though lighter, the medium contour provides a respectable degree of accuracy, vibration control and heat resistance. The 5/8x24 muzzle threads accept a muzzle brake or suppressor, the 1:8 rifling twist stabilizing the heaviest 6.5mm bullets. The single-stage target trigger is adjustable, and broke at 2 ¾ pounds out of the box. Sixteen-, 20- and 24-inch barrels are offered, the test rifle including a 24-inch tube. Barrels are cold-hammer forged and free floating. The action holds a 20-MOA Picatinny rail. The two-lug, spiral fluted, push-feed bolt includes a 70-degree throw and runs smoothly due to a tapered bolt nose that pushes debris out of the raceways. A compact and reliable SAKO-style extractor and plunger ejector are found in the recessed bolt face. A new bolt shroud/dust cover is injection molded from metal instead of polymer, making it stronger to better protect shooters from a ruptured case. A small firing-pin hole also aids in shooter protection in the event of the same. The firing pin includes a dry-fire stop. A large, bolt-on polymer bolt knob provides complete control. The rifle easily assembled sub-½-MOA groups with budget Federal American Eagle 120-grain FMJ ammo, and then went on to produce frequent sub-1-MOA groups with various factory ammunitions.During testing I added a Zero Compromise Optic desert-tan ZC420—a 4-20x50mm MRAD riflescope with unsurpassed optical and mechanical systemsin a compact 12.8-inch-long design. Thefirst focal plane (FFP) optic weighs just 37ounces/2.38 pounds. The ergonomic, exposed locking turrets provide 35 MILs ofelevation adjustment and 20MILs of windage corrections via its 36mm main tube. The scope provides 92 percent light transmission and true-to-life resolution. A larger eye box makes for easier target acquisition and more than 3.5 inches of eye relief. This optic is waterproof to 4 meters and includes a selectable red/green illuminated reticle with AIM automatic shutoff if the scope is lifted or tilted outside of a viable shooting attitude. Illumination is powered by one CR2032 lithium coin battery.Tikka’s T3x Ace Game isn’t your average hunting rifle. It is hugely versatile, highly ergonomic and superbly accurate. There are rifles that during the course of testing you find yourself tempted to own. Given a 22-250 Rem or 6.5 PRC chambering I may have been contemplating my next for rifle purchase. I find the 6.5 Creedmoor boring, but equipped with a suppressor, it certainly would make a fine youth or woman’s deer or pronghorn rifle. The rifle’s solid nature pretty much mitigates any felt recoil, it adjusts to fit nearly any shooter and it makes shooting well child’s play. 22 | inside firearms | spring 2026market trends | focus on opticsArmasight Contractor 640 3-12x50 Thermal Weapon SightArmasight remains the only optics supplier I am aware of to manufacture thermal imaging sights in the USA.For those who insist on buying American, this is their thermal of choice. And a fine choice it is, including state-ofthe-art operating systems and intuitive controls that are easy to master without thumbing through a thick operator’s manual. One of Armasight’s most practical and popular units for those who want to hunt hogs and predators under the cover of darkness is the Contractor 640 3-12x50mm Thermal Weapon Sight. Ease of use comes through the model’s adjustment turrets, instead of buttons. It offers exceptional resolution—even at higher magnifications—and is built to withstand harsh treatment. It also comes at a price well below that of comparable units. The Contractor 640’s ergonomic alloy metal body is exceptionally durable, which makes for an easy sale to those who aren’t in the habit of babying their equipment. The Contractor 640 can withstand recoil from a 50 BMG, for instance. The Contractor contains a proprietary ArmaCORE 640x480 12 micron thermal core that provides topdrawer detection capabilities, detailed pictures, onboard image processing, wireless communication interface, GPS and internal memory. Its quick 60Hz refresh rate means buyers won’t miss any of the action due to processor resets. The Contractor 640 includes a detection range to 1,865 meters on hogsized animals. While visiting Texas on hog-culling missions with college friends, I have run a decent number of high-end thermal units through the paces. Several features stand out with the Contractor 640. It is impressively compact and lightweight, measuring just 8.2-by-3.4-by-3.7 inches and weighing only 1.93 pounds. More importantly, the controls are hugely intuitive and power consumption is low enough to allow an entire night of hunting on one set of batteries. That said, it is powered by two CR123A lithium batteries, which makes replacement easy. I prefer this to rechargeable batteries, which can prove frustrating to charge when in the field and in the heat of battle. The controls of the Contractor 640 include a simple turret system that makes operation especially intuitive. I was able to navigate through features—such as the digital zoom, color pallet and reticles—without the need to spend an hour reading a thick instruction manual. This is the opposite of several complicated units where I felt the engineers who developed them were more interested in demonstrating how smart they were than serving the end user. Those complicated units can require constantly referencing an owner’s manual to perform the simplest tasks. By Patrick MeitinA simple one/off switch and two turret knobs allow fast and intuitive opperation of the Armasight Contractor 640.Armasight uses a quick-detach Picatinny rail system from Kinetic. It is fast, rock solid and repeatable, maintaining zero between optic swaps.

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 23The Contractor 640 allows customers to start shooting with minimal fuss.To help calculate distance, direction and angles, the Contractor 640 holds a digital compass and inclinometer. All Armasight products are MIL-STD compliant, meaning the Contractor 640 is waterproof to IP67 standards. The Contractor 640 can be set up to display various color palettes and multiple reticle options to tastes. The ESP (Easy Sight-in Process) makes it fast and easy to zero before the hunt, and a ½-MOA Boresight feature is included. The sight is easily mounted using the spring-loaded, front-button quick-detach mount. The system maintains zero when changing between a daytime optic and the thermal unit. The integral QD mount by Kinetic makes mounting the thermal sight on any Picatinny rail fast, solid and repeatable. Simply line it up on a Picatinny rail, tilt to the side and click in. Depress the forward button to instantly remove the unit. The Contractor 640 allows video recording and image capture, with four hours of video memory, USB video and Wi-Fi video streaming, Bluetooth 5.0 capabilities, an app for iOS/Android devices and USB-C interface for external devices. When it comes to nighttime shooting, the Contractor includes an integrated stadiametric rangefinder, inclinometer, levelometer, graphic compass, picture-in-picture mode and angle cosine indicator to improve efficiency. There is a reticle On/Off option for switching between spotting and shooting and a battery status indicator is provided. The Contractor 640 comes with the integral quick-detach mount already mentioned, USB-C cable, two CR123A batteries, lens cloth and soft case. The product manual is easy to understand, running through features, operation and maintenance, and including step-by-step instructions for setup, zeroing and troubleshooting. The unit’s 45mm of eye relief protects shooters from sharp-recoiling rifles, provides 3.2x of optical magnification and 1x to 4x of digital zoom. Exceptional imaging is provided by the f/1.00 50mm lens and XGA (1024x768) AMOLED viewing screen with active on-screen graphics. A diopter adjustment allows focusing for any users’ eyesight, including eyeglass wearers.I’m not especially adept at operating complicated technology. Despite this I found the Contractor 640’s well designed and intuitive two-turret navigation easy to understand and operate. Learning to use it was easy, resulting in fumble-free use in the field, even under pressure and while wearing winter gloves. This just isn’t the case with button systems.Sight-in is also simple: go into boresight mode, fire a round (I used an adhesive-backed hand warmer taped to cardboard), maintain point of aim off a solid rest, and then place the sight mark where your round impacted using the turrets. Click and hold the turret to confirm and the rifle is zeroed—verified by a couple more rounds. The wild hog hunting that lures me to Texas annually made a great proving ground for the Contractor 640. The unit allowed me to pick up hogs from incredible distances, and the image quality proved so good there was no way to mistake a calf or white-tailed deer for a hog, despite pitch-black darkness. I also found that Armasight’s four-hour battery claim is pretty conservative, though the unit was turned on and off as needed. Another plus of the power system is the price of CR123A batteries has become much more reasonable in recent years.Armasight’s American-made Contractor 640 is an impressive thermal optic backed by a three year warranty. It provides best-in-class performance and user-friendly operation in a compact and lightweight design making it compatible with any rifle holding a Picatinny rail. 36 | inside firearms | spring 2026market trends | handgun reportSpringfield Armory is a trusted name known for manufacturing rock-solid and hugely-reliable firearms. When I was in the market for a 10mm Auto, I tested several models, ultimately choosing the Springfield 1911 Ronan—which also came with a lower MSRP then some of the other handguns I auditioned. It has proven exceptionally accurate and dead reliable, the handgun I carry when I need backup from big, hairy beasts.Springfield Armory’s 1911 DS Prodigy Compact continues the company’s tradition of producing quality firearms at competitive prices, while also moving the proven 1911 platform forward. The 1911 DS Prodigy Compact was created for everyday carry and built around a 15-round double-stack magazine in 9mm. Its carry creds also include a compact polymer grip module and lightweight aluminum frame, shortened beavertail and recontoured hammer, all designed to minimize its footprint. While this handgun is optics ready, it also holds quality irons consisting of a tritium front bead and serrated rear sights. The design also includes a bottom Picatinny rail to accommodate lasers or weapons lights. In short, the Prodigy combines the battle-proven characteristics of the 1911 with modern round capacity. The double-stack magazine, while providing plenty of firepower, is still slim enough for comfortable defensive carry and complete live-fire control. Springfield 1911 DS magazines are cross compatible with Staccato 2011® platforms. The new Prodigy Compact series is offered with 3.5- or 4.25-inch bull barrels, the shorter barrel version chosen for testing here. The Prodigy Compact can be purchased with an Agency Optics System (AOS) optic package designed exclusively for the 1911 DS. Buyers can also order a variety of optic-specific plates from Springfield Armory, as was done in this test to accept the Burris Optics Fastfire 4 MultiReticle Reflex Sight added for testing. The Burris Fastfire 4 was designed to be compatible with any weapon platform. It has been refined over the past decades to provide new reticle options, longer battery life and greater versatility. The optic can be toggled between four different reticles, including a 3-MOA dot, 11-MOA encircled dot, 11-MOA encircled dot with wider circle, and a 3-MOA dot with left and right leveling wings and circle. Brightness is adjustable to preferences and lighting conditions. The optic is protected by an impact-resistant housing and includes a generous sight window providing a wider field of view. The removeable weather shield ensures a clean picture in any weather, and it comes with a Picatinny mount. Its slim profile made an ideal pairing with the Prodigy Compact. The iron sights are wholly functional on their own. Prodigy handguns are equipped with either a green fiber optic or tritium front bead, the test handgun holding the latter. The front sight nestles solidly into the black-serrated U-notch rear sight with white-accented center mark for confident and consistent aiming. Both are dovetailed into the slide. I used the irons while breaking the handgun in prior to serious testing and before the optic was installed. I have no complaints. Popping empty soda cans at 25 yards was child’s play. The Prodigy Compact includes a precision, single-action trigger that provides a creep-free and crisp break to enhance shooting precision. It is this trigger that has made the 1911 so popular with serious shooters over the years, but the Prodigy trigger is truly exceptional. The extended, frame-mounted ambidextrous thumb safety is highly intuitive and easy to manipulate. The Prodigy hammer is skeletonized for faster lock times, while offering excellent ergonomics, and the slide holds aggressive front and rear serrations for easy racking in any conditions, even while wearing gloves or in wet weather. A Black Cerakote finish on all metal parts makes for low maintenance.A handgun is made or broken by its grip and Springfield hit a homerun with the Prodigy design. The high-impact polymer, wrap-around design is highly ergonomic and easy to handle. The Adaptive Grip Texture provides sure purchase without becoming grabby. 38 | inside firearms | spring 2026market trends | rifle reportAn Italian-made rifle that provides exceptional ergonomics, in-hand balance and value.Franchi USA (owned by Benelli USA Corp.) entered the centerfire bolt-action rifle realm with a bang when they introduced the Momentum series. The series has included several fine rifles since its inception, the latest introduction the new and striking Momentum Classic Walnut Elite. This beautiful rifle includes a Grade-A satin walnut stock and Gun Metal Grey Cerakote finish offering a seamless blend of classic Italian styling, impressive quality and cutting-edge technology. The Classic Walnut Elite includes Franchi’s ergonomic Ergonom-X stock design, crafted to provide maximum shooting comfort from the most common shooting positions. The stock holds raised curves and crisp laser-engraved, raised-scaled checkering to provide a positive grip while wearing gloves or in wet weather. Checkering is found on each side of the pistol-style grip, the side and bottom of the wide, flat forearm and to each side of the stock’s balance point above the magazine well and each side of the subtle rear-butt bag hook. Sling swivel studs are located front and rear. The stock holds Franchi’s proven TSA Recoil Pad, which reduces felt recoil by up to 50 percent and creates a 14-inch length of pull.Of note, the classic comb profile and elevated factory-installed Picatinny rail pair best with a 1-inch-tubed, 40mm to 44mm optic mounted in lower rings. I will return to this momentarily. The round-body receiver includes a three-lug bolt with a fast-cycling 60-degree throw. The one-piece RELIA bolt is spiral fluted and includes a hard chrome finish. The bolt includes a main body larger than the bolt head so requires no lug raceways, which allows it to run silky smooth without binding. The bottom lug, positioned at the 6 o’clock position, pushes cartridges from the straight-line-feed magazine, up the corresponding bolt-lug raceway and slickly into the chamber for reliable push feeding. The safety is a two-position system, and a small tab appears at the rear of the bolt shroud when the bolt is cocked. The safety does not lock the bolt, so unloading the rifle can be conducted while the rifle is on safe. This also means it can snag and open in the field with the rifle shouldered.A one-piece, 0-MOA Picatinny rail anchored by four screws is installed at the factory. It includes a Cerakote finish matching the action and barrel. Franchi’s recoil lug is a little different, the barreled action including a pair of milled slots that mate to an aluminum block embedded into the stock through milled, V-shaped slots forward of the front action screw. The system centers the action in the stock and the action tang is seated atop an embedded rear bedding block. The rear and front bedding blocks project through the stock to create aluminum pillars for the action screws to seat atop. The barrel measures .79-inch behind the 5/8-24 muzzle threads. It is cold-hammer-forged chrome-molybdenum, free floated and 22 inches long. It includes a classic 1:10 rifling twist rate in the tested 270 Winchester chambering. The trigger guard, “bottom metal” and mag well are molded from polymer material and cemented into the wood stock. Cartridges feed from a three-round detachable magazine molded from polymer. Inserting the magazine required tipping the front edge of the magazine into the mag well and clicking it into place from the rear. The magazine’s flush fit maintains the rifle’s sleek lines. The Classic Walnut Elite includes Franchi’s RELIA Trigger—a single-stage design with a 2- to 4-pound break. Trigger adjustments must be made only by Franchi USA or a licensed gunsmith. Optional accessories can be purchased seporately—like replacement TSA recoil pads, TSA recoil pads allowing length of pull adjustments, and large- and small-capacity box magazines.During testing a Burris TR-15 3-15x50mm riflescope was mounted in sleek Warne Mountain Tech four-screw rings. The 50mm objective bell and raised Picatinny rail prevented a hard cheek weld—the reason I earlier suggested a 1-inch scope with smaller objective. With the Burris mounted, finished weight was 9.98 pounds.By Patrick MeitinThe Franchi Momentum Classic Walnut Elite is not only a gorgeous rifle, but well balanced with excellent ergonomics. It makes a great all-round big-game rifle. The trigger of the Franchi Momentum Classic Walnut Elite is not user adjustable, requiring the rifle to be sent to Franchi or a certified gunsmith to change pull weight. The Franchi Momentum recoil lug is different than traditional systems, including V-shaped slots in the action that mate with an aluminum block embedded int he stock.Franchi Momentum Classic Walnut Elite

spring 2026 | insidefirearms.com | 39After testing was completed I mounted a Meopta Optika5 MeoPro 2-10x42mm PA riflescope in lower rings to see if I could create a harder cheek weld. This scope includes a 1-inch tube, side parallax, plain plex reticle, crystal-clear glass and oversized control surfaces. Paired with lower Warne four-screw, 1-inch rings the objective bell just cleared the front of the Pic rail and the chunky ribbed-rubber magnification ring the rail rear, while also providing an edge-to-edge view at the highest magnification and a more satisfying cheek weld. As I suspected, the smaller scope and lower rings made a better fit for this rifle. To test Franchi’s 1-MOA guarantee, I fired six factory loads from Hornady, Nosler and Sierra loaded with bullet weights from 130 to 150 grains. Three of those loads missed the 1-MOA mark by small margins, while three easily clustered into sub-1-MOA groups. I also assembled reloads using monolithic copper and polymer-tipped or VLDstyle long-range lead-core bullets from a variety of popular makers. Overall, the reloads bettered the 1-MOA guarantee with more frequency (see load chart).Franchi extends a 7-Year Warranty with each of their rifles, including repair or replacement of any defects in workmanship or materials to the original purchaser, and only through an authorized dealer. Registration and proof of purchase are required. The Franchi Momentum Classic Walnut Elite in 270 Win, paired with a scope like the Meopta Optika5 MeoPro 2-10x42mm PA, would make an ideal big-game combination. This is an accurate rifle that would prove at home in Eastern whitetail hardwoods while occupying a stand or ground blind, or in Western mountains while spot-and-stalk hunting mule deer or elk. While it is true this is a visually striking rifle sure to elicit envy in any hunting camp, it is also a wholly functional hunting rifle made for any hunting challenge. That walnut stock is undeniably gorgeous, offset by a flawless, weatherproof Cerakote finish that means low maintenance in the harshest weather conditions. • left: The best factory-ammo group from the Franchi testrifle--.37-inch at 2,796 fps-- came from Hornady PrecisionHunter loads with 145-grain ELD-X bullets.• right: The Franchi produced this sub-1/2-MOA group using acombination of Federal Premium's 136-grain Terminal Ascent bullet and 59.5 grains of Vihtavuori N560 powder.Franchi Momentun Classic Walnut Elite in 270 Factory Loads –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Measured Extreme 100-yd. Although this heavy steel Birchwood Casey target is a larger investment, it is one that is well worth the money for customers who are dedicated to thorough training. The Birchwood Casey World of Targets Handgun Dueling Tree is made from solid AR500 steel and rated for use with centerfire handguns. There is a rimfire version available as well, which comes with a lower price tag, but you will likely find more customers interested in steel meant for centerfire training. This target can withstand shots fired from 9mm Luger to 45 ACP rounds.Customers will enjoy the reactive nature of this target, as well as the fact it is a great way to train with a partner. Remind customers this target isn’t just for IPSC shooters. The standard IPSC zones are great for fine-tuning accuracy and running numerous drills, but this type of target is also used in many defensive pistol classes, so it’s a good one for customers to familiarize themselves with. In the tactical world, that’s more than just generally hitting a zone. Anatomically lethal hits require precision, and not all targets help achieve that goal. The North Carolina Highway Patrol TQ-19 target by Action Target is ideal because the man on the target is featured in black with relevant anatomy in thin, lighter lines. Customers will find this target perfect for self-defense training, as it allows them to understand effective hits without leaving anatomy highlighted in garish colors. And that’s why you should keep some seriously cool options in stock. Triumph Systems makes some awesome, eye-catching options and the Threat Down Bleeding Zombie target is a fantastic example. These types of targets do carry a slighter higher price point, but they’re also appealing enough to sell well. The Triumph Systems Threat Down Bleeding Zombie is a reactive target with raised areas over the vital zones. Those zones contain more than 100 individual cells that are filled with colored gel that’s environmentally safe and water-soluble. There’s no better way to get instant feedback, in a fun way. These targets might feature zombies, but the quality of their reactive nature makes them ideal for year-round use. Customers might be more likely to gravitate to these around Halloween, but they’re useful enough to remain useful throughout the year. This is a corrugated target that’s 30-inch tall and 22-inches wide. And because there are so many filled cells, there are extensive options for precise shots. 46 | inside firearms | spring 2026FEDERAL PREMIUM ■ Most customers working on defensive skills will carry a handgun chambered in 9mm Luger. Federal Practice & Defend 9mm 147-grain HST JSP and Syntech TSJ is a combination pack of both target and defensive loads. This is important because while it’s cheaper to run target rounds, they usually don’t recoil or impact exactly like defensive rounds. That means customers should be encouraged to include defensive rounds in their regular training, and this pack makes that easy. This ammo pack includes 50 rounds of Federal’s HST Personal Defensive ammunition and 50 rounds of the company’s Syntech Training Match. These rounds are ballistically similar and give customers the ability to broaden their training with a single box of ammo. HST rounds expand on impact, while the Syntech rounds are for target shooting and don’t expand. During testing, these loads averaged a muzzle velocity of 1,000 feet per second through a 4-inch barrel. Visitfederalpremium.com to learn more.HORNADY ■ Just as the defensive handgun trend is for 9mm Luger, a majority of tactical rifles will be chambered in 223 Remington/5.56 NATO. Hornady Training 223 Remington 55-grain FMJ is quality ammunition that is priced to facilitate longer live-fire sessions. This is useful for customers who demand quality products and need reliable ammunition for a weekend close- quara muzzle velocity of 1,200 fps when fired through a Ruger GP-100 with a 4-inch barrel. Muzzle energy through the same handgun averaged 640 footpounds that was still producing 563 foot-pounds at 50 yards. With a longer barrel, ballistics become even more impressive. There are 20 rounds per box. That means the usual foamies or plain rubber ear plugs aren’t always going to cut it. It’s a good idea to encourage customers to utilize high-end hearing protection that delivers a greater level of noise reduction to preserve their ability to hear long-term, as once their hearing is damaged it doesn’t come back.WALKER’S GAME EAR ■ New for 2026, Walker’s Razor XTRM Digital MAHP Electronic Ear Muffs are the next generation of sophisticated hearing protection. These muffs feature Motion Activated Hearing Protection (MAHP) that extends battery life and eliminates forgetfulness related to turning electronic muffs off after training, resulting in dead batteries the next time your customer shoots. Walker designed this ear protection to be low profile, reducing the risk of them getting in the way, while also improving comfort. GEL earpads enhance comfort during lengthy use as well. The Walker’s Razor XTRM Digital MAHP Electronic Ear Muffs boast active, dynamic sound suppression, wind noise reduction and advanced digital circuitry to deliver superior hearing protection. Customers who value their hearing but also understand the importance of situational awareness during training will appreciate the Hi Gain Omnidirectional Mics, clear digital sound and fast suppression reaction time. These ear muffs have auto shut ters class or personal range day. And because quality, Boxer-primed brass is used, they are reloadable, which is great news for shooters who enjoy assembling their own ammo. Hornady Training 223 Remington 55-grain FMJ is engineered to be ballistically similar to the company’s soft point rounds of the same weight and caliber. That means customers can train more extensively with these FMJ rounds and get a decent grasp of the drop and drift rate of Hornady’s related expanding-bullet ammunition. Even better, you can stock the expanding rounds as well so customers can grab a box of each. This is a 50-round box providing an average muzzle velocity of 3,240 fps. If you have customers looking to get grandpa’s old firearm or a custom wildcat rifle shooting again, Quality Cartridge likely has a solution. They offer an extensive list of well-made brass cases to help the reloading enthusiast build ammunition for odd, discontinued or difficult-to-find wildcat rounds. Quality Cartridge also manufactures monolithic copper and brass projectiles for handguns and rifles, in both common and hard-to-find calibers. Precision milling creates consistency that translates directly into accuracy, hunting options like the GameStopR promoting devastating terminal performance, deep penetration and high weight retention on the toughest game. Inside Firearms talked with Pete Cardona, president of Quality cartridge, to learn more. How did Quality Cartridge get started? ■ Quality Cartridge got its start in 1995 by providing premium, customloaded ammunition. We soon began to receive calls from customers seeking less-common, obsolete, specialty and wildcat cartridges. This called for the production (low-volume) of many rare and unique calibers of cartridge brass. Eventually the demand for empty brass in these odd and specialty calibers began to far out-pace the demand for loaded ammo, so a shift was made in 2009 to production of just empty cases. Another major change at Quality Cartridge came in 2018, when we added monolithic copper and brass projectiles. What makes Quality Cartridge products stand out in the firearms marketplace? ■ Quality Cartridge’s products stand out in the industry largely due to their uniqueness, though our quality is also exceptional. Quality Cartridge offers many brass cartridges and bullet calibers that are not available anywhere else in the USA—and in many cases anywhere else in the world. What are some of the top sellers Quality Cartridge offers? ■ Some of our top-selling brass options include 225 Winchester, 6.5mm-06 (A-Square), 32-40 Winchester, 6.5mm Remington Magnum and 7mm STW (Shooting Times Western). We also do steady business with people looking to load ammo for many wildcat cartridges. What kind of feedback do you most commonly hear from your FFL customers? ■ The most common feedback we hear from our FFL’s and distributors is the lack of supplies and long lead times during the past decade or so. These are the same issues that we struggle with on a daily basis. Why should dealers consider your products over others? ■ Dealers specializing in reloading components will be well-served by Quality Cartridge products. The ability for dealers to supply our unique products to their customers will keep their customers coming back to them, ensuring you are the “go-to guy” in your area for customers with unique needs.Anything new you want to talk about coming soon? ■ We are continuously developing new products. One we released at SHOT Show 2026 is our ELR-x bullet. This monolithic bullet is latheturned to ensure the ultimate in concentricity, leading to the best performance and consistency. Initially it is available in .338 caliber, with calibers to be added soon. For additional information on Quality Cartridge go to qual-cart.com.
