Arts, Literature and Culture

The popular imagination may think of the university as an institution where skills are imparted;
but its true value lies in its role in nurturing and developing culture. Both directly and indirectly,
it is connected with all forms of cultural activities, particularly the arts and literature. In these key
aspects of civilization, creativity and the critical intelligence come together in a dialectical
relationship that demands stringent and sensitive analysis. The webinar celebrating the first century
of the University of Dhaka is an opportune event for such an exercise. Scholars, artists, writers,
and critics, all have a role to play in bringing the history of Dhaka University’s involvement with
the arts, literature, and culture under the spotlight.

The three terms defining the subject of the deliberations at the webinar – the arts, literature, and
culture – are so intimately interconnected that the distinctions between them become blurred on
close examination. Thus, literature is one of the arts, and the arts come under the purview of
culture. Still, the distinctions do serve a purpose; they indicate which aspects are accented. The
study of literature foregrounds textuality, but a text that is used in drama foregrounds performance;
painting and sculpture are fine arts, but in some forms come under popular culture. One could go
on and on; but the main point is that webinar participants are free to examine their subject form
fresh angles, and also in relation to other areas of culture or discourse.

The arts in Dhaka University come under the purview of the Institute of Fine Arts, which has
evolved out of the Dhaka Government College of Arts and Crafts; the Department of Theatre and
performance Studies, the Department of Music, and the Department of Dance. Theory and practice
are equally emphasized, so participants have a wide variety of topics to choose from.

Literature in many languages is studied at Dhaka University, both in the Faculty of Arts and the
Institute of Modern Languages; the languages are Bengali, English, Arabic, Urdu, Persian,
Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, Japanese and French. Besides being an institution for the academic study

of literature, the university has always been a centre of literary activity, and some of the great
names in our literary world have been associated with it as students or teachers or both. Participants
are expected to examine the university’s connection with literary activities from various points of
view, aesthetic, socio-cultural, and political.

As the word itself indicates, the institution of the university is of vast scope; it could be said that
it is etymologically aligned towards cosmopolitanism. Participants are expected to keep the
international and global network in which Dhaka University is embedded in mind in their
deliberations. The broad and flexible framework for the webinar outlined here should conduce to
an exciting series of lectures, talks and exchanges.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Samad is currently serving as Pro-Vice
Chancellor of University of Dhaka. He was born in 1958 in
Jamalpur. He completed a comparative research study on higher
education in social work at universities in Bangladesh and the US
as a fellow of the Catherine A Kendall Institute of International
Social Work Education, one of the most important social welfare
organizations in the world. Prof Samad is also the current president
of Jatiya Kabita Parishad. He was also a visiting professor at the
Winona State University in the United States. He is a member of the DU Senate as well as the
convener of the Awami League-backed blue panel of the university teachers. From 2012 to 2016,
he was the vice-chancellor of the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS).

Professor Samad has published several collections of poetry, including ‘Ekjan Rajnaitik Netar
Manifesto’, ‘Aami Noi Indrajit Megher Araley’, ‘Porabey Chandan Kath’, ‘Cholo, Tumul
Brishtitey Bhiji’, ‘Sharater Akashey Purnima’ and ‘Premer Kabita’.

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards for his contributions to Bangla literature. He was
awarded Bangla Academy Literature Awards for 2020.

Professor Dr Fakrul Alam

Dr. Fakrul Alam is Director, Sheikh Mujib Research Institute for
Peace and Liberty and UGC Professor, Department of English,
and University of Dhaka. He received the Bangla Academy
Puroshkar (Literature Award) for Translation in 2013. His
publications include The Essential Tagore (Harvard UP, 2011;
with Radha Chakravarty); Imperial Entanglements and Literature
in English (writer’s ink: Dhaka, 2007); South Asian Writers in
English (Detroit: Thomson Gale, 2006) and Jibanananda Das:
Selected Poems (UPL, 1999); Other works include translations of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s
Unfinished Memoirs (Dhaka: UPL, New Delhi: Penguin Books, 2012) and Prison Diaries (Dhaka:
Bangla Academy, 2016) and Ocean of Sorrow, a translation of the late nineteenth century Bengali
epic narrative, Bishad Sindhu (Dhaka: Bangla Academy, 2017).His most recent publications are
“The English Writings of Rabindranath Tagore” in The Cambridge Companion to Tagore, Ed.
Sukanta Chaudhuri (Cambridge University Press, 2020); Once More into the Past, (Dhaka: Daily

The Shaping of Bangladeshi Arts, Culture and Literature

Abstract

If the status of Dhaka as the capital city of Bangladesh is embodied symbolically in Louis Kahn’s
architectural masterpiece, the Jatiya Sangsad (or the National Assembly) complex in Sher-e-
Bangla Nagar, the cultural capital of the country symbolically is surely the University of Dhaka’s
campus, stretching as it does from Shahid Minar to Plassey and from the Old High Court and
Curzon Hall grounds to Shahbagh. If you consider besides the Shahid Minar and S. M. Hall,
structures like the Curzon Hall, Charukala Institute, the Arts Building; if you view the sculptures
and memorial plaques spread over the university’s length and breadth; if you take events such as
the Ekushey February, the Boi Mela and the Pohela Boisakh Roto Jatra into conisdeartion; if you
attend academic lectures, seminars and conferences held throughout the vast campus; if you attend
the exhibitions held at Charukala or the cultural events organized regularly in the TSC auditorium;
if you review the history of Bangladeshi art, culture and literature from the time the university was
founded in 1921 to the present and know the works of Buddhadeva Basu, Zainul Abedin and
Munier Choudhury (to name only a few of the greats); and if you spend an evening in and around
TSC and the university library and Charukola to glimpse the literary addas, rehearsals, poetry
readings, theatrical performances and other cultural exchanges taking place on any given day, you
will realize immediately that for nearly 100 years now the University of Dhaka is the heart of
Bangladeshi art, culture and literature. This is a vast subject and it encompasses necessarily not
only the arts but also politics and the role the university has played in the history of the country—
the 1905 partition of Bengal, the 1947 partition of India, the Bangladesh 1971 war of liberation,
the subsequent struggles against autocracy and military governments—for all these have also
molded not only the university’s evolution but also the development of the country’s culture. My
presentation will necessarily provide an overview of this vast subject and emphasize only the major
achievements of the university, its faculty and students in the shaping of Bangladeshi art, culture
and literature.

Dr. Galib Ahsan Khan

Professor Dr. Galib Hasan Khan was born in 06 November 1949.
He obtained his B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy from the University
of Dhaka in 1970 and 1971 respectively. He did another M.A. and
did his Ph.D. in Philosophy from McMaster University, Canada,
in 1978 and 1983 correspondingly. He was awarded
Commonwealth post-doctoral fellow position at the University of
Cambridge, UK, in 1989-90. He joined the University of Dhaka
as a lecturer in August 1973 and retired as a Professor in 2011. He
was also an UGC Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Dhaka, 26 April 2015 to 25
April 2017. At present, He is working as part-time Faculty, in the Department of History and
Philosophy, at the North South University, Dhaka. He was also a Visiting Professor in the Central
Department of Public Administration at the Tri Bhubhan University, Nepal, in 2008 and 2014 for
a time being. He presented a paper at the 20th World Congress of Philosophy in Boston, USA in
August 1998. Later on, in the 21st World Congress of Philosophy in Istanbul, Turkey which took
place in August 2003, He presented two more papers. He has published Ten books, eleven research
articles in English and seven research articles in Bengali.

Mr Ramendu Majumdar

Mr Ramendu Majumdar is a leading cultural activist of
Bangladesh. After doing his M.A. in English from Dhaka
University in 1965, he took up teaching and later advertising as his
profession. But theatre happens to be his lifelong passion. He is an
actor-director, editor of quarterly Theatre and director of Theatre
drama group. He is a member of Dhaka University Senate and
President of Advertising Agencies Association of Bangladesh. He
served as the President (worldwide) of International Theatre
Institute for 6 years. Mr. Majumdar received Ekushe Padak for his contribution in theatre.

The century old light-house of progressive culture

Abstract

Though a hidden intention of the British Government to setup a university in Dhaka was to appease
the sentiment of majority Muslim Community of this region inview of the abrogation of the 1905
Partition of Bengal, the justified reason was to offer an opportunity for higher education for the
Muslim middle class in this part of Bengal. But surprisingly this highest seat of learning did never
take a communal character. From the very beginning the University of Dhaka became a centre of
progressive cultural activities along with academic pursuits. To look for the trends of cultural
activities, there could be three broad periods – 1921-1947, 1948-1971 and 1972 to the present day.
While the University played a vital role in our Language movement, it helped in the rise of Bengali
nationalism leading to the Liberation Struggle. Dhaka University teachers and students had to pay
a heavy price for our independence. With different cultural activities the University became a
vibrant centre of the secular Bengali Culture and progressive socio-political movements.
The present paper will try to highlight some of its glorious cultural traditions.



SESSION 2 DAY 1

Moderator:
Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam

Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam recently retired as Professor of English
from the University of Dhaka and now teaches at the University of
Liberal Arts Bangladesh. His areas of teaching and research
include Modern Poetry, Shakespeare, Literary Theory, Cultural
Studies and Postmodernism. He also writes on art and was on the
editorial board of Jamini, an English language international
journal of the arts, for more than ten years. Besides literature and
theory, he has lectured extensively on art and artisanal practices
and culture. In addition to his academic publications, Dr. Islam has written a number of books on
Bangladesh art and artists, of which two are in English. He has taught art history in the Faculty of
Art, University of Dhaka for a couple of years.

Although primarily an academic Dr. Islam is also an award-winning fiction writer. He is a recipient
of Bangla Academy Award for literature (1996), Prothom Alo Best Book of the Year Award (2005)
and Ekushe Padak for literature (2018).

In the decades since he began his career in teaching Dr. Islam has kept his engagement with
education and socio-political and cultural issues, particularly as they shape the minds of the youth.
Dr. Islam is a trustee of the Centre for Policy Dialogue and the National Museum, Ombudsman of
Transparency International Bangladesh, and a fellow of Bangla Academy.

Professor Dr. Kaiser Haque

Dr. Kaiser Md. Hamidul Haque studied at Dhaka University
before taking his PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar at Warwick
University. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar and Vilas Fellow
at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, and a Royal Literary
Fund Fellow at SOAS. Haq retired from Dhaka University, and is
currently Dean, Arts and Humanities, University of Liberal Arts,
Bangladesh. A recipient of the Bangla Academy Prize, the
Sherwin W. Howard Award for Poetry, and the Distinguished
Achievement Award for Creative Writing ( South Asian Literary Association), his books include
eight poetry collections, most recently Published in the Streets of Dhaka: Collected Poems (UPL),
and Pariah and Other Poems (Bengal Lights); six translated volumes: Selected Poems of Shamsur
Rahman (Pathak Shamabesh); Quartet (Penguin); The Wonders of Vilayet (Peepal Tree, UK;
Writers Ink, Dhaka); The Perfect Model and Other Stories (Writers Ink); The Woman Who Flew
(Penguin); The Triumph of the Snake Goddess (Harvard); Selected Poems of Shaheed Quaderi
(Bengal Lights); and as editor: Contemporary Indian Poetry (Ohio State U P), ‘Padma Meghna
Jamuna: Modern Poetry from Bangladesh’ (SAARC Foundation).

Dhaka University & The Formation of Bangladeshi Literary Culture

Abstract

The paper will trace the history of the role of Dhaka University in the formation of a distinctive
Bangladeshi literary culture. The process has evolved in three readily identifiable phases: The
Colonial, the post-1947, and the post-1971. In the Colonial phase Dhaka was in every sense a
satellite of Kolkata; in the post-1947 phase it became an autonomous cultural metropolis, and
played a key role in the unfolding dialectic of Bengali emancipation. In the third phase it emerged
as the metropolis of an independent Bangladesh. The university has been intimately associated
with literary activities in all three phases, and a large number of the writers and literary critics who
are prominent in our cultural arena studied, taught or in other ways became associated with the
university. Literary events, the publication of journals, and literary movements associated with the
university have contributed towards giving the country its sense of cultural identity. The people
and the groups and trends associated with the university will be discussed in the paper.

Dr. Azfar Hussain

Dr Azfar Hussain is a Bangladeshi-American theorist, critic,
academic, bilingual writer, poet, translator, and public
intellectual. He is Associate Professor of Integrative, Religious,
and Intercultural Studies within the Brooks College of
Interdisciplinary Studies at Grand Valley State University in
Michigan, and Vice-President of US-based Global Center for
Advanced Studies (GCAS) and GCAS Professor of English,
World Literature, and Interdisciplinary Studies. He taught
English, world literature, ethnic studies, and cultural studies at Washington State University,
Bowling Green State University, and Oklahoma State University in the US; while, in Bangladesh,
he taught English at Jahangirnagar University and North South University. He also worked as
Scholar-in-Residence and Summer Distinguished Professor of English and Humanities at the
University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh. In addition to authoring/editing several books, Dr. Hussain
has published—in both English and Bengali—hundreds of academic, popular, and creative pieces,
including translations from several non-western languages, and written on a wide range of topics
from Native American poetics and politics to critiques of postmodern-poststructuralist-
postcolonial theory to Marxist political economy to “third-world” literatures to globalization and
imperialism to theories and practices of interdisciplinarity. Dr Hussain is also an internationally
known public speaker and a frequent subject of media interviews regarding Bangladeshi society,
culture, and politics. His latest book in Bengali called Darshanakkhyan (Philosophical Narratives)
is an interdisciplinary intervention in the fields of contemporary philosophy, politics, culture, and
literature.

Dhaka University and the Culture of Resistance: Colonial and Postcolonial Conjunctures

Abstract

Considering culture as a wide-ranging and unevenly textured terrain of both conflictual and
converging practices and interventions—both material and discursive—while also mobilizing the
Italian political philosopher and activist Antonio Gramsci’s crucial contention that culture is
political (among other things)—I historicize and theorize an “emancipatory culture of resistance”
that Dhaka University (DU) has variously shaped and evolved since its inception in 1921. This
culture, however, is by no means undifferentiated or homogenous. It rather designates and
demarcates a territory of competing narratives, discourses, and interventions. I examine how
different mobilizations and movements—emanating from and gathering momentum at DU—
contributed to the shaping of a culture of resistance that in turn enabled larger mobilizations and
movements in colonial (1921-1947), neo-colonial (1947-1971), and ‘post-colonial’ (1971—
present) conjunctures.

Charting, combining, and using certain crucial conceptual configurations and contours offered by
such anticolonial revolutionaries as Frantz Fanon and our own Kazi Nazrul Islam—one who not
only visited DU several times during the 1920s but also reckoned it as a critical site of resistance
and rebellion—I argue that DU decisively morphed from a conventional academic institution into
a historically produced assemblage of highly politicized subjects and sites and scenes. Thus, DU
came to play a crucial, even a combative, role in forging and evolving a culture of resistance,
characterized as it was by an anti-colonial, democratic, even emancipatory consciousness. I further
argue that without that consciousness—one that was vibrantly in a process of becoming—a number
of progressive, democratic movements would not have acquired the necessary conjunctural mode
and momentum in history. One may readily mention such movements as the Language Movement
of 1952, the Mass Movement of 1969, and our National Liberation Movement of 1971, not to
mention the 1962 Education Movement. In fact, DU played more than a pivotal role in the
Language Movement itself, to say the least, while creating an unprecedentedly robust culture of
resistance that arguably came to “overdetermine” both gnosis and praxis, knowledge and action,
at more levels than one.

Finally, I zero in on the post-independence conjuncture and take the movement for the 1973
University Ordinance as a point of departure in order to argue that over a period of 50 years, DU’s

historically produced culture of resistance has undergone various mutations characterized by both

retrograde and progressive movements. I maintain that such mutations have been made possible
by the four fundamental configurations of our national politics—the bureaucratization of politics,

the militarization of politics, the communalization of politics, and the overall criminalization of
politics. I conclude by submitting that national liberation, democratization, and decolonization—
profoundly interconnected as they are—are hitherto decisively unfinished projects, and that to
carry on the legacy of DU’s culture of resistance is to finish the unfinished, and to create a future

by changing the present, holding that reality is not a destiny but a challenge.

Now a Multimedia International Broadcast Journalist, Anis Ahmed
started his career in teaching. He was a student of English in Dhaka
University. In 1979, after completing his MA in English, he joined
in Notre Dame college as a lecturer in English. He joined
Chittagong University in 1982. Later in 1987 he joined Dhaka
University where, in addition to teaching English Literature, he
taught Applied Linguistics. While he was teaching in Chittagong
University, he did his second Masters from Aston University in
Birmingham on Applied Linguistics. While an Assistant Professor of English in Dhaka University,
Anis left Dhaka University and joined BBC London as a Broadcast Journalist. During his stay in
London, he also taught at SOAS under Dr William Radice, the famous translator of Rabindranath
Tagore’s writings. Since 2001 Anis Ahmed has been working in VOA, Washington as a
Multimedia International Broadcast Journalist.

Anis Ahmed is also a Bangla writer and poet. His seven books of Bangla poems and a book of
essays have been published. He regularly writes in newspapers in Bangladesh and abroad.

Bangabandhu in Dhaka University: From Expulsion to Expansion

Abstract

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was perhaps an exceptional person who was unjustifiably
expelled from Dhaka University in March 1949 and paradoxically he remained an indispensable
personality for students of the university who were his strength during all his following
movements. Although the University formally withdrew his expulsion long after his death in 2010
to pay him due respect, from 1949 till his assassination in 1975, he was officially an expelled
student of Dhaka University for demanding the rights of class four employees of Dhaka University.
The political and very unjust expulsion that challenged his academic life turned out to be a blessing
in disguise and his engagements with the students of Dhaka and beyond increased manifold and
his extra-ordinary power of oratory developed to such an extent that on March ’71 he delivered a
speech juxtaposed with logic and patriotic passions.

In this paper the author describes from linguistic point of view that it is worth revisiting
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech on 7 th March 1971 in order to understand how
significant, his words and sentences were and even how important his occasional pauses were.
Language is not merely a sum total of sounds or words and neither a sentence the biggest unit of
analyzing language. Text and Discourse Analysis, one of the modern ways of looking into
language, is essentially a language in use which is not confined into alphabets, words or sentences.
On the contrary it is through the inter-sentential as well as intra-sentential relationship that we can
explore into the meaning of the language irrespective of the fact whether it is written or spoken.
Political speeches and addresses are, indeed, no exceptions. Based on these principles of language
analysis, an Speech Acts and other aspects of linguistic to analyze his speech and the difference
between planned and spontaneous speech as well as Bangabandhu’s body language in
communicating effectively with his audience which came with an exceptional expectations of
changing their political fate through realization of their long cherished dream.

Professor K.A.M. Saaduddin currently serves as an adjunct
professor in the Department of World Religions and Culture at the
University of Dhaka, where he has been teaching for more than
50 years. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from the
University of Dhaka and an M.A. in Sociology from the
University of Pennsylvania, which he attended as a UNESCO
fellow. In 1969 he joined the University of Dhaka's newly
established Department of Sociology, subsequently becoming an
associate professor and chairman of the department. He has also taught at Pennsylvania Military
College and Penn Morton University. A highly respected academic, he was twice elected as the
dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, three times elected as the president of Dhaka University
Teachers' Association, and elected several times as president of the University Teachers'
Federation. He has published numerous academic papers on different sociological topics and issues
in several acclaimed nationals and international journals, which have become invaluable sources
for future sociologists.

Professor Dr. Syed Azizul Huq is the current chairman of the
Department of Bengali, University of Dhaka and the Director of
Dhaka University Prokashana Sangstha. He was born in 1958 at
Pirojpur to Mst. Hazera Khatun and Syed Nurul Huq. He got his
Ph.D. in Bengali in 1995 from University of Dhaka. He has
written over 40 research articles published in different national
research journal and about one hundred articles published in
different Dailies and other Periodicals. His research interests are the stories and novels of Manik
Bandopadhyay, on whom he has written and edited multiple books, anthologies and journal
articles; philosophical dimensions in Bengali folk and contemporary literature, history of Bengali
Women etc. He has written academic biographies of legendary artists Qayyum Chowdhury,
Quamrul Hassan and Zainul Abedin. He has edited works of Dinesh Chandra Sen, Abdul Haq,
Rabindranath Tagore, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay and Manik Bandopadhyay. He is the Life
Member of Bangla Academy, Royal Asiatic Society, Bangladesh Itihash Parishad and Dhaka

Dr. Kaiser Md. Hamidul Haque studied at Dhaka University before
taking his PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar at Warwick
University. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar and Vilas Fellow at
the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, and a Royal Literary
Fund Fellow at SOAS. Haq retired from Dhaka University, and is
currently Dean, Arts and Humanities, University of Liberal Arts,
Bangladesh. A recipient of the Bangla Academy Prize, the
Sherwin W. Howard Award for Poetry, and the Distinguished
Achievement Award for Creative Writing ( South Asian Literary
Association), his books include eight poetry collections, most recently Published in the Streets of
Dhaka: Collected Poems (UPL), and Pariah and Other Poems (Bengal Lights); six translated
volumes: Selected Poems of Shamsur Rahman (Pathak Shamabesh); Quartet (Penguin); The
Wonders of Vilayet (Peepal Tree, UK; Writers Ink, Dhaka); The Perfect Model and Other Stories

Professor Biswajit Ghosh

Professor Biswajit Ghosh (born 8 April 1958) is a Bangladeshi
professor, essayist and researcher. He is a Professor of the Bangla
Department at University of Dhaka and Incumbent Vice-
Chancellor of the Rabindra University. He started his career as a
lecturer at the Bangla Department of Dhaka University on 1
February 1984. He has been appointed by the Ministry of
Education as the first Vice Chancellor of Rabindra University on
11 June 2017 for four years. He wrote and edited more than 50
books. For his contributions in research, he was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2011
and Ekushey Padak in 2019.

Ms. Monira Parveen

Ms. Monira Parveen is a Lecturer in the Department of Dance
at the University of Dhaka. She is a renowned Classical
Dancer (Kathak) and an ICCR Scholar from India. She
received a Gold Medal in M.A. (1st Class 1st position) from
the Department of Dance and received from West Bengal State
Government Keshari Nath Tripathi and The Vice-Chancellor
Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury to The Convocation of
Rabindra Bharati University in 2014. She also earned two
more Gold Medals on the National Level of Inter-University Dance Competition, Bangladesh
in 2006.

She performs regularly at different programs and festivals at home and abroad which organized
by the Ministry of Culture, Bangladesh; Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy; Bangladesh High
Commission, Kolkata; High Commission of India, Bangladesh; ICCR; the Government of
West Bengal and the Government of India. She is also involved in various research activities.
She has already published five articles and attained many National and International Seminar
organized by UGC, University of Dhaka, Rabindra Bharati University, Government of West
Bengal. She is currently busy with research as well as the new production of Kathak Dance.
