Message from the
Secondary Principal
Rick Odum
My kids love yearbooks. Whenever they get a chance, they pull down their old yearbooks and pore
over the pictures of past classmates and fun events from earlier years. This makes sense, in my
experience, yearbooks serve several vital functions in the ecology of a childhood.
Yearbooks allow us points of reference, and serve as valuable records of moments lost to time. They
show us how things were, and more importantly WHO we were. In preparation for writing this, I dug
up one of my old High School yearbooks. Of course I turned directly to my picture, and curiously
enough, found someone unrecognizable. The troublemaker that graced that page bears almost no
resemblance to the person I am today. Putting that person in context is essential for making sense
of one’s present.
Yearbooks are also a record of our progress, both as individuals and as institutions. On the surface,
the story of 2020-2021 may not seem like one of massive institutional development, and according
to traditional ideas of development, that may be the case. However, I would contend that this school
has grown a lot in this past year. We have endured/ are enduring a crisis that was unpredictable
and completely out of anyone’s area of expertise. We improvised, innovated and successfully kept a
school open when most around the world had to close. Through it all we built capacity in our faculty,
staff and students. We all know how to pivot in the face of crisis, and what is a better goal for
development than that?
Yearbooks also offer us a liminal space between the past and the future. They give us the chance to
see who we were, so that we can move on in becoming who we will be. No year has this process felt
more welcome, and I would argue that in no year have circumstances conspired to prepare us more
for taking the next step into the future.
Thank you all for an amazing year. I truly look forward to the future here at AISL!
Dr. Rick Odum
