three. Basketball is a awesome sport and it’s
important by teaching you how to be a good sport
and a team member. Basketball has a lot of things to
learn about and a lot of those things are in this book.
For example if you want to know about some of the
greatest players like Michael Jordan or
Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar fit that description. Basketball
is a great sport and I think you will like it.

NBA players and their great games

There are many NBA players and a great number of really good games. For example Wilt Chamberlain's
100 point game or Kobe Bryant’s 81 point game, those are both examples of some of the greatest games.
There are many great players in NBA history, it’s hard to narrow it down so here a couple greats, Lebron
James, Michael Jordan, Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, Bill Russell, and Oscar
Robertson. Many of these players had some of the most important games in NBA history. Lebron James
recently had a 57 point game which was the highest of the 2017-18 season so far. Bill Russell is known for
winning 11 championships with the Celtics. Kareem-Abdul-Jabbar is known for a special hook shot. It was
called the skyhook, he’d basically shoot it from anywhere, he would look at the rim and hook a basket in,
it was unblockable! When Kobe Bryant scored 81 points he was 28-46 from the field(61%) 7-13 from the
three point line(54%) and 18-20 from the free throw line(90%). He scored 55 points in the second half, 27 in
the third quarter and 28 in the fourth quarter, he ended up with 81 points, second most in a game. Another
great game was in the NBA Finals of 2012, Ray Allen sank a buzzer beater 3 pointer to make the game go
into overtime which later the Miami Heat would win that NBA Finals against the Spurs. There were many
great games and I’m sure there will be a lot more.

The Rules SLAM DUNK
Commentators are usually
There are a lot of rules in basketball, this chapter is all about the rules. former NBA players, for
example Shaquille O’neal,
The numbers rule Charles Barkley, and Kenny
Smith.

First, the numbers rule, in high school and college you can’t have either digit of your number of
your jersey be greater than 5. I guess that refs can’t handle big numbers.

How the game works

The games are 48 minutes even though the game ends up being 2 hours and 30 minutes long,
and there are 4 12 minute quarters with a break called halftime after 2 quarters, halftime is 15-20
minutes long and commentators and announcers break down the game so far, commentators are
usually retired NBA players.

You can’t go from high school to the NBA anymore

There is another rule where you can’t get drafted by an NBA team when you’re in high school,
you used to be able to, for example Lebron James, Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant were drafted out
of high school. Now players aren’t because the NBA wants the players to be ready.

Goaltending

Goaltending is when either when a shot goes off the backboard and you pin the ball back to the
backboard, if you block a shot when it’s going downwards toward the rim and if you go for a rebound and
it hasn’t dropped below the rim.

Fouls

There are three different fouls in basketball, a flagrant foul is when you do a bad foul usually on
purpose, for example, they might call an elbow to the face a flagrant, the second foul is a technical foul,
that is when a player or a coach talks back to the ref and might get ejected, then the other team would get
2 free throws and the possession of the ball.

How you GROW in basketball

As you get older the basketball gets bigger and so does the court. The court from endline to endline
is 84 feet. The ball is either a 27.5, a 28.5 or a 29.5, 27.5 is considered a youth ball, a 28.5 is a ball that
WNBA players would use, and a 29.5 basketball is what NBA players use. In the NBA and in college they
stretch out the three pointer because if they didn’t all NBA players could be sinking threes easily, scores
would be well over 120 points.

Positions and subs

There are many positions in basketball like the point guard that usually handles the ball, you
have your shooting guard which is usually one of the better shooters on the team, you have your
small forward which is kind of big but can still shoot, you have your power forward which is on the
bigger side and is powerful and you have your center which is the biggest guy on your team that
usually grabs rebounds and plays in the post. When the coach feels like he wants to put subs in
which would sub in for the person that the coach would rather have out.

Comparing baseball positions to basketball positions

In baseball there is a pitcher, a catcher, a first baseman, a second baseman, a shortstop, a
third baseman, a left fielder, a center fielder, and a right fielder. In basketball there is only a point
guard, a shooting guard, a small forward, a power forward, and a center. That is a big difference.

There are way too many rules in basketball and these are just the important ones.

Levels and Conferences SLAM DUNK
There are many different levels in basketball, this The ACC is mainly

Madness because it’s in March. Only a couple teams
from each conference get in. It’s hard to win 2 years in a
row because if you win one year the next year the star
player of your team would probably be in the NBA.

Coach K.

One of the most famous coaches of all time is
Coach K. from Duke. He has over 1,000 wins at Duke.
In my opinion he is one of the greatest coaches of all
time. There are many conferences, I didn’t even go into
divisions, but all of the important ones were said.

Fun Fact
The Big 10 surprisingly has 14 teams and the Big 12 has 10 teams.

Conferences and Levels

There are a lot of conferences, for example the ACC [ Atlantic Coast Conference], the Big 10, the
Big 12, the SEC, the MAAC, and the Patriot League. There are many levels in basketball, you start out
with youth and then high school and then college probably not the G-league which is for players not ready
for the NBA, and finally the NBA.

Battle of the coaches

There was a battle of the coaches in the late 70’s to 80’s. There were three coaches, Coach K. from
Duke, Jimmy Valvano from North Carolina State, and Dean Smith from North Carolina. They were great
coaches and Jimmy Valvano was the coach of North Carolina State when they lead a great comeback to
win the NCAA tournament

Owwwww!!!!!

In comparison football and basketball
injuries are really different, for example in
football injuries are more severe like a
concussion , in basketball the most common
injury is a torn ACL which is in your leg and
ankle injuries. There are very different ways to
get injuries in both sports, in basketball you
can easily land on your ankle wrong or get a
twisted ankle and you might be out for the
whole year. In football if you are the
quarterback you might get sacked and might
break your arm because you landed on it
funny. In basketball and football a concussions
is a common injury. In football you might be a
wide receiver and after you catch a ball you
could fall and trip over the defender, football
and basketball injuries are really different.
