Reflection
The Adjunct Certification Program has been a very challenging and rewarding experience. It has
really helped re-focus my attention on the details of lesson planning. When I started teaching, I
was working in a public school system that put a lot of emphasis on lesson planning. We spent
hours in department meetings making plans to make plans. It seemed like a very trivial process,
so when I left that district, my focus on lesson planning fell to the wayside. Now don't get me
wrong, I still had a plan for every class I taught. I knew the content I would be covering and how
I would present it to my students, but I didn't put a lot of thought into the how and why I was
doing things. The ACP reminded me of the importance of making sure that every aspect of my
lesson plans serves a specific purpose and that each piece of the lesson builds upon the next. In
my classroom, I have put a lot of effort into really building into a lesson or concept with my
students. I have noticed a lot more interest in the lessons I have been teaching now that I am
putting more emphasis on the bridge section of my lesson. It really gets my students set up and
ready to learn. I have also been trying to incorporate more ways for my students to be involved
in the lesson process. I have been using more peer-to-peer interaction as well as giving students
more opportunities to discuss their understanding of concepts and topics. One of my new favorite
activities is the value line. I have used it a couple of times already and I love it because it not
only gives students a chance to move around and speak their mind, but it also makes them think
more critically about their reasoning. They know that there is a possibility that they will have to
explain themselves, so they think more critically about the value that they put on topics and
ideas. I feel like this, along with many of the other techniques I've learned throughout the course,
are really helping me to be a more effective instructor.
This program has also helped me to think more critically about assessment. I sometimes
feel like I got caught in a rut of using the same style of assessments, and this program has helped
me to regroup and try out new practices. I have started to incorporate more pre-assessments as
well as informal assessments. I feel like this has helped me to stay more in tune with what is
happening with my students in the classroom. One of my favorite informal assessments that I
have implemented has been the minute paper. I have always believed that if you truly understand
a concept, you can write about it. The minute paper is a great way for me to incorporate this idea.
I give my students topics that are relevant to our lessons in order to see what they have learned. I
have used this as an informal assessment as well as a pre-assessment and a strategy to encourage
reading.
For further professional development, I would love to get more training on the
technology that is available to instructors. We had a brief lesson on incorporating technology
into our lessons, and there were a few things I did not even know were available for us to use.
For instance, using the clickers would be a great addition to some of my lessons. It would be a
quick way to check general knowledge or promote further discussion on controversial topics. I
would also like further instruction on some of the websites we discussed. There are a lot of
instructional games and resources that I had never heard about, and I would like to delve further
into them.
