As part of activities marking the one year anniversary of the
passage of Hurricane Maria, a tree planting activity took place
at three major tourism sites: Botanical Gardens, Trafalgar
Falls and Emerald Pool. Several of the cruise passengers from
the Carnival cruise ship Fascination, which was in port, along
with students participated in activity at the various locations.
At the Botanical Gardens, 80 trees and shrubs were available
for planting including Royal Palms, Bougainvillea and Dwarf
Poinciana (Pride of Barbados). In addition, 12 Gold Orchids and
6 Tree Ferns were planted at Trafalgar Falls and 30 Ground

Swingin’ Stars
The Swingin’ Stars, a dance band from Dominica, is
the country’s oldest band, and the second oldest band
in the Caribbean. Started in 1959 under the name
‘Swingin’ Teens,’ the band developed considerable
energy and versatility. In the 1960s, the name was
changed to Swingin’ Stars, and by 1966 they emerged
as one of the top party bands in the Caribbean.
In May of 1967, Swingin’ Stars recorded their first
single, ‘Party,’ and in 1968 recorded their first album,
‘In Orbit.’ To date, the Swingin’ Stars band has released
20 albums and over 30 singles.
Swingin’ Stars versatility in almost all musical styles,
from Soca and Reggae to R&B and ballads, has added
to their popularity and growing fan base. Over the
years, they have contributed tremendously to music
and culture in Dominica. They have been a major
part of cultural celebrations, namely Carnival and
the World Creole Music Festival. They have provided
musical accompaniment for local artistes (namely
calypsonians), and musical entertainment at countless
shows and dances.
