EFFICIENCY
(Reference CHAPTER 5:BETA DETECTOR INITIALIZATION; SECTION:EFFICIENCY
DATA)

In order to get an activity reading, it is necessary to measure Efficiency for the nuclides that
will be used. Obtain a Standard Source for each nuclide and measure the Efficiency in the
container (syringe or vial) you normally measure the isotope in. If the isotope is measured in
another container, a Correction Factor will have to be inserted. (Reference CHAPTER
5:BETA DETECTOR INITIALIZATION; SECTION:EFFICIENCY DATA)

SELECTING A NUCLIDE FOR MEASUREMENT
You can select a nuclide in three different ways:

1. PRE-SET NUCLIDE KEYS: The Beta Detector has 8 pre-defined nuclide keys.
Each key is labeled to indicate the corresponding nuclide as shown below.

A1-6 APPENDIX I July 16

CAPINTEC, INC. CRC®-ULTRA BETA DETECTOR

Note: These keys are only valid for Beta Measurements when Efficiency Data
have been measured or input.

F Ga76 In111 Tc99m I123 I131 Xe133 Tl201

18 C11 N13 O15 U6 U7 U8 U9

Example: To measure Tc99m, place the sample in the well and press

Tc99m

O15 . The activity for Tc99m is automatically displayed.

2. USER DEFINED KEYS: The Beta Detector has 5 user defined keys. Nuclides
can be assigned to these keys.

Note: Before using one of these keys, a nuclide must be assigned to the key.
(Reference CHAPTER 5:BETA DETECTOR INITIALIZATION;
SECTION:USER KEY ASSIGNMENT)

U1 U2 U3 U4 U5

Example: If the assignment for U1 is Co57, place the sample in the well and

press U1 . The activity for Co57 is automatically displayed.

3. NUCLIDE KEY: The Nuclide Key allows a nuclide to be selected from the list of
nuclides that have been stored in the memory. Simply press the NUCL key and
use the alphanumeric (number/letter) keys to specify the nuclide. After inputting
the values, press the ENTER key.

Example: To measure Sr89, place the sample in the well and press NUCL .

PRS PRS TUV WXY

Press 7 7 8 9 . Press ENTER .

MEASURING NUCLIDE ACTIVITY
To perform an activity measurement, place the sample with the appropriate holder in the
counter after specifying the nuclide.

Input the counting period via the numeric keypad and press ENTER. Press BETA to start
counting. Pressing BETA again will terminate the measurement, if so desired.

When the measurement has been completed, a record of the measurement can be printed
by pressing ENTER (PRINT) when the Counting Results Screen or Bar Graph Results

Screen is displayed. If the Bar Graph Results Screen is displayed, the Bar Graph will also be
printed.

MEASUREMENT WITHOUT NUCLIDE SELECTION
The CRC®-Ultra allows measurement without a nuclide selected. The system then calculates
and displays the results in cpm (or cps) for all the channels.

Press CAL# (COUNTING RATE). No nuclide name is displayed.

Place the sample in the counter and input the counting time via the numeric keypad and
press ENTER. Press BETA to start counting. Pressing BETA again will stop the
measurement, if so desired.

FUTURE ACTIVITY
The CRC®-Ultra has a special feature that allows you to automatically determine the activity
of a sample at some point in the future.

Note: This feature is only available when a nuclide is specified because the half-life of the
nuclide must be known.

From the measurement results screen, press TIME .

The time/date entry format is hhmm/DD/MM/YY where:
• hh= hours (24 hour format) (1 or 2 digit)
• mm = minutes (2 digit)
• DD = day (2 digit)
• MM = month (2 digit)
• YY = year (2 digit)

Input the new time and date and press ENTER . The “FUTURE” activity is displayed.

Press HOME to exit Future Time and return to the Beta Measurement screen.
