A note from...
Mr. Walters
As we turn our gaze back to the past, we see a long and winding road
that has led to this moment. You have had to accomplish a great deal and
it is important to stress that these accomplishments, however gallant, are
not yours alone. Each and every one of you has the support of family and
friends, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins,
and other loved ones who stood by you, strengthened you and inspired
you.
So, as we call to mind the past that has led you to this momentous
occasion, let us remember those who truly made this moment possible. Let
us also honor the faculty of Orwell Village School. It has been their
responsibility to educate you. These dedicated teachers teach, they
motivate, they inspire and they lead. They care about you and they change
lives. They do it all.
In these times of uncertainty one thing is clear. Your future is bright. You
are now equipped with one of the most powerful tools which you can use
to change the world, an OVS education. You have journeyed with great
friends and wonderful peers. You have been trained by master teachers,
and you have earned the support of a school that will stand by you
throughout your careers.
As you depart from the Orwell Village School, I invite you to consider your
future, the dangers, risks, and uncertainties, along with the opportunities
that lie before you. You need to be confident in your ability to navigate
this world and to respond to the challenges with grace and intelligence. Do
not fall for shallow and easy solutions. Simply refuse to sell your talents
and aspirations short.
On behalf of the entire OVS school community, Congratulations and my
very best wishes for you all!

8th Grade
Through the Years
We started our kindergarten year at Orwell Village School with Caleb B., Joseph, Catherine, Jacob, Savana, Riley, Ethan, Erin,
Sienna, Emma, Connor, Patrick, Isabella, Caleb W. and Clara. Hunter joined our class a few months into the school year. Our
teacher was Mrs. Delancy. We had a jar of stones in our classroom and if you did something good you got to add a stone.
Every class had one and we had an assembly to put all of the stones together. At the end of every day we had indoor
recess that we called “free choice.” We spent a lot of time playing in the loft and many of the girls got in trouble for
fighting over baby dolls. Mrs. Delancy used to give us bouncy balls and other toys if we behaved for substitute teachers. At
the end of the year we went on a field trip to Mrs. Delancy’s camp. She gave us stuffed animals and we played in the water
and went kayaking. Emma left our class after kindergarten.
In first grade Alyssa joined us. Our teacher was Mrs. Young. The first grade classroom had a library and yoga balls that you
could sit on. During silent reading, a lot of us would hide in the library and talk instead of doing any reading. Mrs. Young also
had a red button that said, “That was easy,” whenever you pressed it. Our student teacher, Miss Martin, would always tell
us about her pet sugar gliders. We learned how to tell the temperature from the thermometer on the wall and listened to
math songs while we worked. We had a very strict “hands off,” rule and got reminded about it every day, but we still
managed to get in trouble for playing tag at recess. At the end of the year we went to Mrs. Young’s camp and went
swimming, drove the boat, and ate mac’n’cheese. Sienna moved away at the end of the year.
Mrs. Sweeney Dodge was our second grade teacher. We have many fond memories of sitting on the floor during Read Aloud
while we braided her hair and listened to her read “A to Z Mysteries.” Second grade was the first year that we each had our
own desks, which definitely didn’t stay very organized. We also went to Computer Lab every week. Everyone would rush to
finish their tumble books before going to play games for the rest of the time. JJ and Rose joined our class part of the way
through second grade and Alyssa left. Ms. Reardon substituted for us frequently and kept us entertained with stories from
Uganda and Anansi the Spider. At the end of the year we went on a field trip around town and to Crystal Beach.
We had Mrs. Cecil in third grade. We remember her spraying us with water after a hot recess and letting us watch a lot of
movies when we got our work done. We had a yankee swap at Christmas time and used to solve a lot of riddles. We also
learned and performed a musical called “Shh We’re Writing The Constitution,” with the fourth graders for Memorial Day. We
got our chromebooks and won a pizza party from a school wide typing competition. We all remember being a little
traumatized when Savana cut her finger on a broken pencil sharpener. Caleb W. and Rose left after third grade. We finished
off the year with glass blowing and pottery field trips.
In fourth grade we went to Starbase with Ms. Ellis and launched rockets. We got to have lift top desks (which made you
cool) and most of us had a binder for the first time. We learned about the Revolutionary War and got to do a simulation. We
also watched a lot of “Liberty Kids.” Science with Ms. Ellis was fun. We did the weather on the announcements and the
recycling. We used to enjoy finding and correcting mistakes in the math book. On really hot days Ms. Ellis would bring us
popsicles and let us work in the fifth grade classroom while they were gone because it was much cooler. At the end of the
year we went on a field trip to the Hubbardton Battlefield and went on a walk. We got to meet Mason for the first time at
the end of the year picnic. Erin moved away after that year.

8th Grade
Through the Years
In fifth grade, Mrs. Darley was our teacher and Mason became a part of our class. Science was always exciting. We got to
make our own ecosystems in jars and plastic containers and design robots while studying Mars. Mrs. Darley always did her
best to make us comfortable in the classroom, whether that was letting us stand up and sit on the floor or have fidget
toys (which we were later banned from.) During fifth grade we spent a lot of time outside in the outdoor classroom. We
also started learning how to play our instruments. Peace circles were introduced to us this year and over time all of us
learned exactly what to say during one. We all had our own jobs to earn Darley Dollars in classroom economy at the end of
the day, which was always a mixture of productivity and chaos. Towards the end of the year, Hannah joined our class.
Sixth grade was our first year as part of the middle school. We got to have lockers and take Spanish class for the first
time. Mrs. Robinson taught us ELA, Mrs. Eagan taught math, and Mrs. Volpe taught us science. We also had Integrated
Studies with the seventh and eighth graders. During that year we made globes, had whole middle school advisory, and got
way too excited over playing games in math. Excitement like this made it too hard to stay focused in silent reading, which
is how Mrs. Eagan’s wall became stained by an exploded pen and a failed attempt to cover it up with a pillow. (Now there is
a bookcase hiding the evidence.) The entire middle school went on an overnight field trip to Camp Chingachgook. We went on
a high ropes course, played tetherball, and had a campfire. Hannah left a little while after the beginning of sixth grade.
In seventh grade Ian joined our class. We still had Mrs. Robinson for ELA, but we had Mrs. Volpe for math. The middle school
went on a field trip to Poco, where we got to participate in an Underground Railroad simulation and go on a hike. Mr. Walters
started having a “boys club” on Mondays. During this time the girls read The Hunger Games, and watched the movies. In
seventh grade most of our classes were mixed with the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, so we didn’t get to spend a lot of
time as a class. At the end of the year we went on a Burton factory tour and saw “Aladdin” in the movie theater. The band
also went on a trip to the Great Escape. We lost Isabella, Joseph, and Ethan at the end of the year.
For our last year at Orwell Village School, Mrs. Eagan taught us ELA and Mrs. Volpe taught math. The year started off really
well. We launched bottle rockets, could never silently read in ELA, and confused our PBLs and PIPs in Mrs. Robinson’s room.
The middle school travelled to Poco again and had a good time. We started planning an eighth grade trip to Boston at the
end of May and had a successful bottle drive. However, in March all of our plans came to a halt and were later cancelled as
we had to figure out how to continue learning from home. Despite this, we were still able to read “Macbeth,” have a
yearbook, and finish off our time at OVS with a good story to tell in a few years.
