Gulintangan
a series of small "gongs" that are struck to produce
melodies/intonations. It is a main traditional instrument and plays a vital
role in an orchestral band. Without gulintangan, an orchestral band
cannot be operated.
A gulintangan note is equivalent as one octave of a
piano; White keys consist of the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B
and Black notes represent sharps.

Canang
is a traditional instrument that only acts as an accompaniment in an
orchestral band. Although it is not functioned to produce the main
melody, the absence of this instrument may cause dissonance in a
song that is played.
Canang Tiga also has its own note; C, D, E and is typically played in a
repetitive rhythm format. .
Canang Satu acts as a "time
marker" to ensure an ensemble is
playing at the right tempo
Tawak - Tawak
plays a role as "peningkah" and "peningkul" to respond to an
orchestral rhythm so that the sound of the music is not dissonant.
Its shape is a smaller version of a "Gong"
and slightly bigger than "Canang".
Gong
a traditional instrument that acts as an accompaniment
and diversify rhythms that is being played. Its role is
important in an orchestral band as it produces a "bass"
sound upon hitting it.
Gendang Labik
a percussion that acts as the main keeper of tempo in an
orchestral band. There are two ways to play this instrument:
1) Player can use their bare hands to play gendang labik
2) Player can use a "rotan" piece
Typically in a gulintangan orchestral band, a player uses his/her bare
hands to play the gendang labik. When a gulintangan melody is combined
with other instruments such as "gambus" or a "violin", gendang labik is
plaued using a rotan piece.
IRAMA GULINTANGAN
TRADITIONAL GULINTANGAN RHYTHM
Irama Gulintangan (Traditional Gulintangan Rhythm)
IRAMA GULINTANGAN ORCHESTRA consists of a combination of
gulintangan, canang, tawak - tawak, gong and gendang labik. There are no
"nyanyian" (singing) in this rhythm. Some examples of Irama Gulintangan
are:
1) Raja Lalu - this rhythm is originally played when a king/Sultan has a visit
to Tutong district and the villages in that district. Raja Lalu is played upon
the arrival of a king/Sultan in an event or after leaving the event. This
rhythm can also be played to accompany the groom towards the bride's
house.
2) Sakai - this rhythm originally comes from a tribe that first lived in
Kampong Pebalat (now known as Kampong Saba) , Kampong Ayer. This
tribe has received blessings from a king to wear "gegandung", pisang -
pisang", "sapu - sapu aing" and "berpelampang" to honor their achievement
in discovering a place that is known as "Berunai".
