WELCOME ADDRESS Dengue Awareness
BY HEAD OF BEN
Drawing Competition

SABAH 2020

PROF. DR. ROSLI RAMLI Assalamualaikum Wr. Wbt. and Salam Sejahtera,

Head It is our great pleasure to host this programme and welcome all participants to
Biodiversity and Ecological join our Dengue Awareness Drawing Competition 2020 for Sabah, organized
Research Network (BEN) by Biodiversity & Ecological Research Network (BEN) and Malaysian Society
of Parasitology & Tropical Biomedicine (MSPTM). It is a great honour for us
and I believe it reflects the importance of raising the awareness towards
dengue.

An important priority for this event is to increase the public health awareness
particularly dengue fever and its vector, the Aedes mosquitoes. This event
consists of two main components; whereby participating in this drawing
competition, we hope to attract students, teachers and parents to acquire
knowledge on the Aedes mosquitoes and dengue through the creation of
artworks. We are excited to share the artwork together with acquiring the
scientific knowledge through this awareness via an exhibition for the benefit
of the community. However, due to the pandemic of Covid-19, we are
required to postpone the exhibition.

Most of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all teachers, parents and all
participants from various primary and secondary schools in Sabah for your
support by submitting 252 fabulous and genuine artworks for this event. I
would also like to extend my deep appreciation to all members of the
organizing committee for their contribution towards the success of this event.

Let us take ownership for the future we wish to create by consciously bringing
awareness and advocating a better and healthier environment for our
communities.

Last but not least, congratulations to all the winners and I wish all of you enjoy
this rewarding programme. Thank you.

WELCOME ADDRESS Dengue Awareness
BY PRESIDENT OF MSPTM
Drawing Competition

SABAH 2020

DR. SAM MOHAN Dear Principals, Teachers, Parents, Sponsors, Organisers and Students,
ARUPUTHAM
Dengue infects 300 – 400 million people a year.
President Dengue kills 40-50 thousand human beings a year.
Malaysian Society of Sadly these numbers keep rising year on year.
Parasitology and Tropical
Medicine (MSPTM) 2020 the world is focused on the Covid Pandemic. All other diseases
Including dengue are being neglected. This makes Dengue a serious concern
on the healthcare and economy of our country. This year most councils are
not focused on mosquito control and public health personnel have been
redirected to become Covid frontliners. With all this in mind, the programme
mooted by Biodiversity & Ecological Research Network (BEN), UM and
Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine (MSPTM) is most
relevant to propagate awareness on Dengue among the youth of our nation.
We have to put an end to Dengue by managing our environment and
controlling the Aedes mosquito.

The awareness program was initiated last year in the state of Selangor. It was
a big success and we decided to continue the program in the Land below the
Wind together with Ministry of Youth & Sports Sabah and Department of
Education Sabah. MSPTM is indeed very grateful to these two ministries and
the collaborating schools in the state for their support and active participation.
We are confident this activity will encourage our youth to be more vigilant and
aware of their welfare and surroundings.

I wish to personally thank my Vice President, Dr. Chen Chee Dhang for being
inspirational and devoted on this initiative and all the sponsors and media
partners for their contributions.

Special thanks to all the students who made the effort and LET’S STOP DENGUE!!

Drawing Competition

SABAH 2020

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizing committee for
providing this opportunity to welcome all of you to the Dengue Awareness
Drawing Competition 2020.

For those who are aware, Luyang has always been a dengue hot zone for the
past 26 months, where I served as the State Assembly-man, and we have
worked closely with the city council to tackle this issue systematically and
efficiently.

YB PHOONG JIN ZHE I acknowledge the importance of raising awareness for the public on
prevention and control of the Aedes mosquitoes especially from continuously
Luyang State Assemblyman breeding in open stagnant water. Fortunately, Dr. Chen Chee Dhang's dengue
awareness programme caught my attention, and without any hesitation I
Former Minister wholeheartedly supported his initiative. We must start educating the public
Ministry of Youth and Sports starting with the youngest, whereby the message of dengue control will be
Sabah conveyed to others; and together we will build a more sustainable
community.

It is an honour for me to be a part of this inspiring programme. Once again, my
sincere appreciation towards the organizing committee for their enormous
efforts and also to all 252 students who participated in this awareness
drawing competition, all of you are equally amazing!

I hope everyone can learn something new throughout the process and I wish
all of you all the best in the competition.

The Right Way to Avoid Dengue

The topic of my drawing is “The Right
Way to Avoid Dengue”. This drawing will
illustrate more on how dengue can be
avoided. Dengue is a viral infection
transmitted by the bites of an infected
female Aedes mosquito. Stagnant water
in discarded tyres and bottles, stored
water in pails, and standing water in
ditches or drains are favorable breeding
grounds to for mosquitoes. This drawing
suggested few methods to avoid
dengue. Firstly, clear the thrash and
waste regularly. Secondly, make sure
there are no stagnant water stored in
anywhere or anyways. Thirdly, make a
good use of insecticides on affected
areas. Lastly, stay healthy and clean.
Keep our home safe and sweet!

Together We Can Stop Dengue

My drawing’s title is "Together We Can
Stop Dengue". Malaysians from different
ethnic backgrounds are working
together to their best efforts to eliminate
mosquitoes for the good of their health
and environments. The use of chemical-
based pesticides are not an ideal
alternative for our environment. These
pesticides can be harmful to people and
nature. So, Rafflesia, Nepenthes and
Chomper are recommended as a
"Dengue Patrol”. They are environmen-
tally friendly and effective in eliminating
mosquitoes. A decorative national flag
on the car bonnet is meant for the
Malaysia National Day celebration. Last
but not least, let us do our part to stop
dengue. As the slogan says “Prevention

Cegah Denggi Tanggungjawab Bersama

Stop Dengue, Our Life, Our Fight!

Game On! The mosquito eradication begins at our drainage systems using the advanced
technologies. Our children or even teenagers are too addicted to electronic gadgets and being
disconnected with the environments and nature. I want to redirect their attentions from electronic
gadgets to living and loving their life. A meaningless game is created to make them realize on how
important are our life. So, I purposely highlighted "Stop Dengue" and followed by the subtitle of
“Our life, Our fight”. From the drawing, there are two different environments which Aedes
mosquitoes are likely to breed in. One is stagnant water and the other is rubbish dumps. After
cleaning up, a fresh natural environment is restored and free from Aedes mosquitoes. Therefore,
through this effective game, I hope to see that teenagers become motivated and do their parts in
eradicating mosquitoes.

Throughout the years, dengue has

Fortunately, this disease can be
prevented. In my drawing, I have

the spread of Aedes mosquitoes. For
example, we can start cleaning the areas
that may hold stagnant water such as
drains, roof drains and flower pots. The

prevent Aedes from entering our homes.
We should raise awareness on the
